How to Fix Mario Kart World Online Connection and Matchmaking Problems

A successful internet test does not guarantee a Mario Kart World match. Use the Switch 2 connection test, NAT results, error codes, and targeted network checks to find the cause.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Mario Kart World says you are online but will not join a match, start with System Settings → Internet → Test Connection on your Nintendo Switch 2. Record the NAT type and download and upload speeds, then test again after each change. A successful internet test does not guarantee that peer-to-peer matchmaking will work: restrictive NAT, latency, or another player’s network can still prevent a match.

First identify which connection problem you have

There are two different failures that can look alike. If the Switch 2 cannot reach the internet, troubleshoot the console’s connection and check Nintendo’s Network Status page for an outage or maintenance notice. Nintendo recommends that status check for errors in the 2321-0000 to 2321-9999 range; the code range is general Nintendo Switch support, not a Mario Kart World-specific diagnosis. See Nintendo’s guidance for errors 2321-0000 to 2321-9999.

If the console’s internet test succeeds and other online services work, but Mario Kart World cannot find or connect to a match, focus on matchmaking. Online play uses peer-to-peer connections between players, so the quality and compatibility of the players’ networks matter in addition to whether your console can access Nintendo services. Nintendo says NAT and latency can prevent matchmaking from completing even when a console is online. Its general matchmaking troubleshooting guide applies to Switch and Switch 2 games.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The console is offline: check the local Wi-Fi or wired connection, then check service status.
  • The console is online, but no match starts: record NAT and speed results and work through the matchmaking checks below.
  • It fails with one particular player: ask that player to run the same checks; their network may be contributing.
  • It fails with everyone: investigate your network, router, and internet provider before buying equipment.

Pay attention to when the failure happens. A console that cannot connect to online services at all calls for a different first step from one that can browse online features but disconnects as a race starts. If the message appears only while connecting to another console, record the exact wording and code; that pattern can point toward peer-to-peer conditions rather than a general loss of internet access.

Check the game and online-play requirements

Before changing router settings, confirm that Mario Kart World software is up to date and that you have a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo lists both as requirements for online play. Its Mario Kart World multiplayer instructions also explain how to start online play and distinguish it from the game’s separate LAN Play mode.

Note what works as well as what fails: does the console’s connection test succeed, do other online features work, and can you connect to some players but not others? Those observations help distinguish a general service or internet problem from a peer-to-peer compatibility issue. If you see an error code, write it down exactly; the codes below point to different troubleshooting paths.

Check the Nintendo Network Status page when an error falls in the 2321-0000 to 2321-9999 range or when several online functions stop working at once. If Nintendo lists maintenance or an outage, retry after service is restored instead of changing router settings in response to a service interruption. If the status page does not show an issue and the console test succeeds, continue with matchmaking-specific checks.

Run and interpret the Switch 2 connection test

  1. From the HOME Menu, open System Settings → Internet → Test Connection.
  2. Record the displayed NAT type, download speed, and upload speed.
  3. After a troubleshooting change, run the same test again and compare the new result with your notes.

Nintendo’s matchmaking guidance identifies NAT type A as preferred and says type B is compatible with most other NAT types. The results are clues about whether your network can establish peer-to-peer connections, not a guarantee that every opponent will be reachable. Nintendo also warns that high latency can cause a matchmaking timeout even if NAT and measured speeds seem acceptable. The support flow includes a 3 Mbps download threshold as a diagnostic branch; reaching it does not, by itself, prove a connection will be stable or playable. Consult Nintendo’s connection and matchmaking steps for the exact branch relevant to your results.

NAT result What Nintendo’s guidance says How to use it
A Preferred for peer-to-peer communication. A favorable result, but not proof that latency or the other player’s network is problem-free.
B Compatible with most other NAT types. Often workable; check stability and whether the problem is limited to a particular player.
C May have difficulty connecting to users on stricter NAT types. Look at the router/modem arrangement and follow Nintendo’s NAT troubleshooting.
D Poor for peer-to-peer connections and generally able to connect only with type A. Investigate the network’s NAT configuration with Nintendo’s guidance or your ISP.
F Unable to complete peer-to-peer communication. Work through the network and NAT checks; a console internet connection alone will not resolve this restriction.

These descriptions come from Nintendo’s NAT troubleshooting guide for Switch 2 and Switch. NAT behavior depends on the household’s modem, router, and internet-provider setup, so do not assume that one setting will work for every network. Nintendo also notes that both players’ NAT types affect the connection process.

Use the test as a baseline rather than a one-time pass/fail verdict. Write down the results before changing anything, then repeat the test after restarting equipment, moving closer to the router, or switching to a wired connection. If the NAT type stays the same but the connection becomes more reliable, wireless conditions or stability may have mattered. If the results are restrictive and remain so, continue investigating the modem/router arrangement or ask the ISP about the connection.

Download speed is only one part of the picture. Nintendo’s 3 Mbps figure belongs to a troubleshooting decision, not a promise that a connection above that number will avoid lag or disconnections. Upload speed, latency, consistency, and the other player’s connection also matter to the match. A good speed result should therefore be considered alongside the NAT type and the pattern of failures.

Try wireless troubleshooting if the console uses Wi-Fi

Make one change at a time. Test the connection and try matchmaking after each experiment; otherwise, it is difficult to tell which change helped or caused a new issue.

  1. Restart the network equipment. Power-cycle the modem and router, allow them to reconnect, and run the Switch 2 connection test again.
  2. Test closer to the router. Nintendo recommends removing the console from its dock and placing it within 10–15 feet (about 3–5 metres) of the router. Retest before changing other settings.
  3. Reduce possible interference. Move metal objects and electronics that could interfere with the signal away from both the router and console, then test again.
  4. Test the saved network’s IPv6 setting. Nintendo’s wireless troubleshooting suggests trying IPv6 off in the saved network’s settings. Treat this as an experiment, not a universal fix: compare results, and restore the original setting if it causes other problems.

These steps address wireless conditions as well as matchmaking. If the NAT result remains restrictive, moving closer may improve the radio link but will not necessarily change how the internet connection handles peer-to-peer traffic. Continue with the NAT and other-player checks rather than repeating the same proximity test.

Changing one variable at a time is useful because several different causes can produce the same symptom. For example, a close-range test can show whether the wireless link is part of the problem, while the NAT result helps assess peer-to-peer compatibility. If you restart the router, toggle IPv6, move the console, and change other settings all at once, a successful match will not tell you which change made a difference.

If a change makes the situation worse or affects other devices, undo it where possible. In particular, disabling IPv6 is not a guaranteed improvement for every home network. Treat it as a comparison test recommended in Nintendo’s wireless steps, and keep the original setting in mind so you can restore it.

Try wired troubleshooting if the console is docked

Switch 2 requires the console to be docked for wired internet. If you already have a wired connection, Nintendo’s troubleshooting steps can help isolate a bad cable or another device on the network:

  1. Power-cycle the modem and router, then rerun the console’s connection test.
  2. If practical, connect the console directly to the modem to check whether another network device is involved. Follow the modem and ISP’s instructions when changing connections.
  3. Restart the modem and test again.
  4. If you suspect the Ethernet cable is damaged or unreliable, try another cable and compare the connection-test results.

A cable is a sensible purchase only if you need one for a wired setup, are replacing one that tests faulty, or are preparing LAN Play. Nintendo does not identify buying a new Ethernet cable, router, or Wi-Fi extender as a general fix for matchmaking. Its connection troubleshooting instructions cover wired isolation steps; start with the equipment you already have.

Connecting directly to the modem is an isolation test, not a reason to buy a new router. If the test works directly but fails through the router, the router or another device in the home network may be involved. If the same issue persists through the modem, especially alongside problems on other devices, contact the ISP. Follow the provider’s instructions when changing the modem connection so that you do not disrupt the service or leave other devices without access.

Wired and wireless should be compared by what they help diagnose, not by assuming one is always the fix. A wired test can remove Wi-Fi signal conditions from the equation and can help reveal a faulty cable if changing the cable changes the result. It cannot guarantee a more favorable NAT type or resolve restrictions imposed by an ISP.

Find out whether another player or network type is involved

If a match fails with one friend but works with other players, ask that friend to run the same connection test and share the NAT type and speed results. Nintendo says another player’s network may be part of the problem, because both players’ NAT conditions affect peer-to-peer connection. If matches fail with everyone, give more attention to your own network and router.

Mobile hotspots and 5G connections may prevent peer-to-peer connections, according to Nintendo’s guidance for error 2618-0513. If possible, test on a different network. For error 2618-0514, Nintendo recommends trying another network, preferably a cable, DSL, or fiber connection. These are general Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 networking recommendations, not a claim that every hotspot or 5G service will fail. See Nintendo’s pages for error 2618-0513 and error 2618-0514.

When you test another network, change only the network if possible and keep the game, console, and other conditions the same. If matchmaking succeeds elsewhere, that is useful evidence that the original connection’s configuration or provider may be involved. Contact the ISP to ask whether peer-to-peer traffic is restricted or whether it can help resolve the NAT condition.

The pattern of failures is a useful comparison: one friend versus every opponent, one network versus another, or Wi-Fi versus a wired test. If only one player is affected, have both players compare their results rather than assuming the person who sees the error is the only possible cause. If every match fails on your home connection but succeeds on another network, focus your next call on the home router or ISP rather than repeatedly changing game settings.

Nintendo’s caution about hotspots and 5G is not an absolute rule that every mobile connection will fail. It means those network types may not support the peer-to-peer connection the match needs. If you are using one, a test on a cable, DSL, or fiber connection can help determine whether the connection type is contributing.

Use the error code to choose the next step

Code or message Nintendo’s stated meaning Next check
2618-0514
“Unable to connect to the other console(s). Please try again later.”
Generally indicates multiple players had a suboptimal network connection during matchmaking. Possible factors include restrictive NAT, latency, or an internet service type Nintendo does not recommend. Try another network if available; Nintendo recommends cable, DSL, or fiber for this scenario. Also compare NAT and connection stability.
2618-0513 Usually indicates a network that is not optimal for peer-to-peer matchmaking; ISP conditions, speed, or NAT may contribute. Retry, check the NAT result, and test another network. Keep in mind Nintendo’s hotspot and 5G caution.
2321-0000 to 2321-9999 Nintendo’s range-specific support guidance directs players to check for service outages or maintenance; its page also recommends restarting the console and troubleshooting NAT if online matches fail consistently. Check Nintendo Network Status and retry after service is restored. If no service issue is listed, restart and continue with the connection and NAT checks.

Error 2618-0514 is accompanied by Nintendo Support’s exact message, “Unable to connect to the other console(s). Please try again later.” The code is covered by Nintendo’s general Switch and Switch 2 support and is not exclusive to Mario Kart World. Likewise, the 2321 code range should not be treated as a game-specific code. Use the official pages linked above for 2618-0514, 2618-0513, and 2321-0000 to 2321-9999 rather than applying one code’s advice to every failure.

For 2618-0514, think of the message as a matchmaking connection problem, not proof that your console is offline. Nintendo describes it as a case in which multiple players had a suboptimal network connection during matchmaking. Restrictive NAT, latency, and the type of internet service can all be relevant, so use the code alongside the console test and the pattern of which players you can reach.

For 2618-0513, retrying and checking NAT are reasonable early steps, but a retry alone does not diagnose a recurring problem. If it returns, compare results on another connection where possible. For the 2321 range, start with Network Status because an outage or maintenance period changes the right next step; if service is available and the problem persists, use the console restart and NAT checks Nintendo lists.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Escalate without losing router settings

If the console connects on another network but not the original one, ask the internet provider about peer-to-peer restrictions or the NAT behavior of your service. If the problem appears specific to the router, Nintendo recommends contacting its manufacturer about firmware updates or resetting it to factory settings. A factory reset may erase custom configuration, so first record any settings you need and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

If the same issue continues when connected directly through the modem and other devices are also affected, Nintendo’s guidance is to contact the ISP. When contacting support, provide the error code, whether the Switch 2 connection test succeeds, its NAT and speed results, whether the problem affects all players or one, and which troubleshooting changes you have already tested. That information narrows the issue without assuming the router or console is at fault.

Do not factory-reset a router as the first response to one failed race. Nintendo recommends contacting the router manufacturer about firmware or a reset when router-specific trouble remains, and a reset can erase custom settings. Save the configuration details you may need and follow the manufacturer’s directions. If you are unsure whether the issue lies with the router or the provider, tell support whether a direct modem test or a different network changed the result.

A practical escalation order is to confirm the service is available, run the console test, try the relevant wireless or wired checks, and compare another player or network if possible. Then contact the ISP when another network works or the direct-modem test and other devices point to the connection. Contact the router manufacturer when the fault appears isolated to router behavior. This keeps the conversation grounded in test results rather than guesses about buying replacement equipment.

Keep LAN Play separate from online matchmaking

Mario Kart World LAN Play is a separate local wired mode, not a recommended workaround for ordinary online matchmaking. Nintendo says LAN Play supports 2–24 players, with up to two players per console. It requires Switch 2 consoles and docks, the game, an Ethernet cable for each player or pair, a television or monitor, and a shared wired router; a network switch may be needed if the router does not have enough LAN ports. All consoles must connect through the same shared router, and each Switch 2 must be docked for wired internet. See Nintendo’s Mario Kart World multiplayer setup instructions.

That equipment list applies to a planned LAN Play setup. For ordinary online matchmaking, begin with the console’s test results and free troubleshooting steps; buy a cable only when a wired connection is needed or an existing cable appears faulty.

LAN Play has a different goal from internet matchmaking: it links players through the same shared router in a local wired setup. The 2–24 player capacity and up-to-two-per-console limit describe that mode, not the number of players who can join an online match. Plan for the docks, displays, cables, and available LAN ports before a LAN session; if the router lacks enough ports, Nintendo notes that a network switch may be needed. Do not purchase those items just to address a standard online matchmaking error.

What to try first, in order

For most players, the efficient sequence is straightforward: confirm the game is updated and Nintendo Switch Online membership is active; check Network Status if the error is in the 2321 range; run the Switch 2 connection test and record NAT and speeds; then try one relevant network change at a time. A Wi-Fi player can test close to the router and reduce possible interference. A docked wired player can restart equipment and check an existing cable. If only one friend is affected, ask them to test too.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Only consider a purchase when the test points to a specific need. An Ethernet cable can replace a damaged cable, support a wired connection, or be part of a LAN Play setup. It is not a proven general cure for matchmaking, and a new router or Wi-Fi extender is not Nintendo’s default recommendation. The connection test, a second network comparison, and support from the ISP or router maker are better first steps than spending money without knowing the cause.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can I use the internet on my Switch 2 but not join a Mario Kart World match?

A successful Internet test only confirms that the console can reach the internet. Matchmaking also depends on peer-to-peer compatibility, NAT, latency, and the other player’s network. Run System Settings → Internet → Test Connection and record NAT type and speeds.

What NAT type is best for Mario Kart World online matchmaking?

Nintendo says NAT type A is preferred for peer-to-peer communication and type B is compatible with most other NAT types. Types C and D can have increasing connection limitations, while type F cannot complete peer-to-peer communication. Both players’ NAT types can matter.

What does error 2618-0514 mean in Mario Kart World?

Nintendo Support associates 2618-0514 with the message “Unable to connect to the other console(s). Please try again later.” It generally indicates that multiple players had a suboptimal network connection during matchmaking; it is a general Switch and Switch 2 networking code, not exclusive to Mario Kart World.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a mobile hotspot or 5G cause matchmaking problems?

Nintendo says mobile hotspots or 5G networks may prevent peer-to-peer connections. If possible, compare with another network; Nintendo recommends cable, DSL, or fiber for the 2618-0514 scenario. This is a caution, not a guarantee that every mobile connection will fail.

Should I buy an Ethernet cable to fix matchmaking?

Not as a general first fix. Nintendo’s guidance supports using a cable for a wired setup, replacing one suspected to be faulty, or setting up LAN Play. Start with the free connection test and other troubleshooting steps before buying equipment.

What does Mario Kart World LAN Play require?

Nintendo says LAN Play supports 2–24 players, with up to two players per console. It uses docked Switch 2 consoles connected to the same wired router, with the game, a display, and an Ethernet cable for each player or pair. A network switch may be needed if the router does not have enough LAN ports.

The Bottom Line

Start with Nintendo Switch 2’s connection test, not new networking equipment. Record NAT type and speeds, distinguish an offline-console problem from matchmaking trouble, and make one change at a time. If the issue is limited to one player, compare their connection too; if it persists across your network, use the test results to decide whether to contact the ISP or router manufacturer. Buy a cable only for a real wired need, a faulty existing cable, or LAN Play.
