Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Most Magento installation database errors are caused by one of four conditions: an unsupported PHP or database combination, incorrect database credentials or grants, a database schema that does not match the code, or an operating-system limit such as disk space, permissions, packet size or concurrent jobs. Capture the exact message, identify the Magento release and software stack, verify Adobe’s compatibility requirements, test the database outside Magento, and only then change schema or data. Back up any existing database before attempting repairs.

Start with the exact failure, not a guess
Magento reports very different problems through similar-looking SQLSTATE prefixes. Save the complete exception, including the SQLSTATE code, server error text, table or constraint name, duplicated value, and the command or installer screen that failed. Also record the Magento or Adobe Commerce version, PHP version, database engine and version, operating system, and whether the database is local or remote.

var/log, the web-server error log, the PHP error log, and the database server log. - Note whether this is a brand-new installation, a retry after a partial installation, an application upgrade, a module installation, or a sample-data import.
- Do not drop tables, delete rows, or disable foreign-key checks until you have a verified backup and know which state must be recovered.
For an existing installation, take a complete database backup and preserve the application files before running repair commands. A failed schema update can leave a partially changed database, so a rollback point is more useful than an unrecorded sequence of emergency edits.
Verify the supported Magento, PHP and database combination
Check the system-requirements table for the exact Magento or Adobe Commerce release before modifying SQL. Adobe supports only the combinations listed in its tables; a database that happens to accept a connection is not necessarily supported for schema creation or upgrades. Version mismatches can produce syntax errors, failed constraints, authentication problems, or incomplete setup.
#1 Best Overall
The compatibility warning is release-specific. Adobe’s current requirements information records that MySQL 8.0 reached end of support on April 30, 2026 for the older 2.4.4–2.4.7 release lines and advises moving to a compatible MariaDB version rather than assuming that a newer MySQL major release will work. Do not generalize that date to every Magento branch: check the table for the release you are installing.
| What to check | Why it matters | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Magento or Adobe Commerce release | Each release line has its own PHP and database support range. | Read the matching requirements table, including patch-level notes. |
| PHP version and loaded extensions | Missing or unsupported extensions can interrupt setup before or during database work. | Confirm the CLI and web PHP versions are the intended versions and that both load the required extensions. |
| Database engine and major version | SQL syntax, authentication, triggers and reserved words vary by release. | Use a version listed for the Magento release; do not “fix” unsupported SQL by editing generated statements. |
| CLI versus web environment | The shell may use a different PHP binary or php.ini than the web server. |
Compare php -v, php --ini and the web server’s loaded configuration. |
Test the database account independently
Magento cannot compensate for a wrong host, port, database name, password, account-host restriction, firewall rule or missing grant. Test the same connection from the machine that runs Magento before rerunning the installer.

Create a dedicated database and account
Adobe’s MySQL guidance uses this pattern:
CREATE DATABASE magento;
CREATE USER 'magento'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'magento';
GRANT ALL ON magento.* TO 'magento'@'localhost';
FLUSH PRIVILEGES;
Replace the example password with a long, unique secret. Use a separate account for each environment where practical. The account host is part of the identity: 'magento'@'localhost', 'magento'@'127.0.0.1', and 'magento'@'10.0.0.20' are different matches. A wildcard such as 'magento'@'%' should be used only when remote access is deliberately required and is restricted by network controls.
Run a client test from the application host
Use the same host, port, database, user and password that you will enter in Magento’s installer. For a local service, a test has the form:
Rank #2
mysql --host=localhost --port=3306 --user=magento --password magento
After connecting, verify the selected database and privileges:
SELECT DATABASE();
SHOW GRANTS FOR 'magento'@'localhost';
If the database is remote, create or configure the account on the database server, allow the application server’s address through the firewall, and test with the remote hostname or IP and port. A successful login from your laptop does not prove that the Magento server can reach the database.

Interpret a failed connection
- Access denied: check the password, account host portion, authentication method, and grants. Confirm that the account has privileges on the intended schema.
- Connection refused or timed out: check that the database service is running, the port is listening, DNS resolves correctly, and firewalls permit the path.
- Unknown database: create the schema or correct the database name in the installer.
- Works with one host value but not another: use the exact value that matches the account grant and network route;
localhostmay use a local socket while an IP uses TCP.
Determine whether this is a clean installation or schema drift
Use a clean database for a new installation
A partially populated database can make a first installation fail inconsistently. Adobe states that the installer does not overwrite the database by default when run against the same instance. For a genuinely new deployment, create a new empty database and point the installer at it. If you must reuse the existing schema, inventory what was created and treat it as a recovery operation rather than a clean install.
Run the installer from Magento’s bin subdirectory, as Adobe’s installation guidance requires. A typical command is executed as bin/magento from the application root, not by invoking an arbitrary script from another directory.
Check an existing application before upgrading
When code or modules are newer than the database, use Magento’s status command first:
bin/magento setup:db:status
This reports whether module versions and database state are aligned. If an upgrade is required and the code, backup and maintenance plan are understood, run:
bin/magento setup:upgrade
bin/magento cache:clean
setup:upgrade applies pending schema and data changes after an application or component change. It does not repair arbitrary duplicate rows, damaged data, unsupported SQL, or a database that cannot be reached. If it fails, use the named table, column, trigger or constraint to identify the specific state problem instead of repeating the command blindly.
Match common SQLSTATE messages to the right fix
| Message pattern | Likely issue | Next diagnostic step |
|---|---|---|
| Access denied; cannot connect; connection refused | Wrong credentials, account host, grants, network path, port or stopped server. | Run the MySQL client test from the application host and inspect grants and firewall rules. |
| Unsupported server, syntax error or reserved-word error | Database version is outside the release’s supported matrix, or the stack is otherwise mismatched. | Confirm the exact Magento release and supported PHP/MySQL/MariaDB combination before changing SQL. |
| Duplicate entry for a primary or unique key | Imported, partially upgraded or otherwise inconsistent data already contains the value Magento is trying to create. | Back up first; identify the table and value, compare the rows with the expected module state, and choose a data repair or clean-database path. |
| Duplicate foreign-key constraint name | A constraint was already created, often after a partial schema operation or a module/version mismatch. | Inspect existing constraints and the module’s schema version; do not repeatedly add the same constraint. |
| Unknown column, missing table or trigger creation failure | Code and database are from incompatible states, or a schema/data patch ran out of order. | Use the named module and object to compare the deployed code with the database; restore or repair the affected migration state. |
SQLSTATE[HY000] with “too many open files” |
Concurrent processes, commonly cron and deployment work, exhausted file descriptors. | Stop overlapping jobs, correct the resource limit or scheduling conflict, then retry the affected operation. |
| “MySQL server has gone away,” table full or error 1114 | Database or temporary storage is full, the packet is too large, or a connection was lost during a large operation. | Check disk space, inodes, database temporary space and packet limits before retrying. |
Duplicate keys and foreign keys
Do not delete the row named in a duplicate-entry error merely to make the command continue. Determine whether it is valid catalog, URL-rewrite, customer or order data, and whether the duplicate came from an import or an interrupted upgrade. Magento’s issue tracker documents a 2.4.3 upgrade failure involving duplicate url_rewrite_id data; the useful clue is the table and value, not the generic SQLSTATE prefix.
For a duplicate foreign-key name, inspect the table definition and existing constraint names. A second attempt can fail even though the first attempt created the constraint successfully before another step aborted. Compare the deployed module version and its schema/data patches, then restore from backup or make a controlled migration correction.
Missing columns, tables and triggers
A missing column or table usually indicates schema drift rather than bad credentials. Check whether the module that owns the object is enabled, whether its code was deployed completely, and whether its patch ran. Trigger errors deserve the same treatment: an official Magento issue records trigger creation failing because a required column was missing. Fix the underlying schema state instead of suppressing trigger creation.
Resolve storage, packet and concurrency limits
Check free space and inodes
Database operations need room for table data, indexes, temporary tables, binary logs and filesystem logs. Run df -h and also check inode availability on the database and application volumes. Low storage can cause lost connections, table-full errors and incomplete imports. Free space safely, expand the volume or move temporary storage before running another upgrade.
Raise packet size only when the error warrants it
Adobe recommends increasing MySQL max_allowed_packet when importing many products; the documented default is 16 MB. Inspect the current value and the size of the failing statements before changing it. Increase the server and client settings consistently, restart the database service if required by the configuration, and make the change within the limits of your hosting policy.
Prevent overlapping jobs
Magento deployment and schema work can collide with cron, queue consumers or another installer session. Adobe documents a deployment case in which concurrent cron execution exhausted file resources and produced an SQLSTATE[HY000] “too many open files” error. Pause cron and other competing jobs for the affected maintenance window, correct the file-descriptor limit or schedule, and retry once rather than launching several simultaneous attempts.
Fix installer logging and filesystem errors
When the Setup Wizard cannot create install.log
Adobe identifies two common causes: more than one installation process is running, or PHP’s open_basedir restriction blocks the directory returned by sys_get_temp_dir(). Stop duplicate browser or command-line installer sessions. Then inspect the php.ini actually loaded by the web process, confirm the temporary directory exists and is writable, and allow it in open_basedir if that restriction is required. Restart the web server after changing PHP configuration and retry the installer once.

When sample data cannot create a generated directory
This symptom is normally a filesystem ownership or permission problem rather than a SQL defect. Reset ownership and permissions according to the user that runs PHP and Magento commands, doing so as root only when necessary. Adobe also says not to install sample data in production mode. For the documented sample-data scenario, switch to developer mode and clear generated code and metadata before retrying; do not apply that cleanup casually to a live production deployment.
Keep the command-line user and web-server user consistent where possible. A command that succeeds from your shell can still fail through PHP-FPM or Apache if those processes cannot write var, generated directories or temporary files.
Quick Recap
Choose a remediation path without destroying data
| Situation | Preferred path | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Brand-new install with no data to preserve | Create a new empty database, verify credentials, and rerun the installer from bin. |
Continuing against a half-created schema without inventorying it. |
| Existing store with a pending module upgrade | Back up, pause competing jobs, run setup:db:status, then apply setup:upgrade after confirming compatibility. |
Dropping tables or disabling foreign keys as a shortcut. |
| Duplicate or inconsistent business data | Identify the affected rows, compare with application expectations, and repair through a reviewed migration or restore. | Deleting whichever row makes the next command pass. |
| Unsupported database release | Move to a release-supported MySQL or MariaDB version using a tested migration plan. | Editing Magento SQL to force an unsupported server to work. |
| Remote database that cannot be reached | Fix DNS, route, firewall, listener and account-host grants, then retest from the application host. | Opening the database to every source address without controls. |
| Repeated failures with high operational risk | Use a managed Magento/database administrator or Adobe Commerce implementation support after preserving logs and backups. | Making irreversible production changes during an active incident. |
Safe recovery and verification sequence
- Save the complete error, SQLSTATE, object name, Magento release, PHP version, database engine/version and failed command.
- Back up the database and copy relevant Magento, installer, web-server and database logs.
- Verify the release-specific software matrix and test the database connection from the application host.
- For a new deployment, switch to a clean database. For an existing deployment, preserve the current state and identify the failed migration before changing data.
- Run
bin/magento setup:db:status. Runbin/magento setup:upgradeonly when code, modules and database state are understood. - Correct the specific resource issue indicated by the message: permissions,
open_basedir, packet size, disk space, inodes, file descriptors or job concurrency. - Rerun the smallest relevant command once. Avoid launching multiple installers or upgrades at the same time.
- Open both the storefront and Admin after completion. Investigate 404 responses, missing styles or broken assets as deployment verification failures rather than assuming that a completed SQL command proves the application is healthy.
Practical checks before declaring the installation fixed
- The Magento command-line PHP binary and web PHP process use the intended versions and configuration.
- The database account can connect from the application host with the exact host, port, schema and credentials configured in Magento.
- The account has the required privileges on the intended database and its host restriction matches the connection.
- The database engine version is listed as supported for the installed Magento release.
- No second installer, deployment, cron process or queue worker is changing the same schema during setup.
- Storage, inodes, temporary space and packet limits are sufficient for the operation.
- The installer can write its log and Magento can write required generated and cache directories.
- A backup exists before any repair that changes existing rows, indexes, constraints or module state.
