Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →First check whether the screenshot has the wrong viewport dimensions, too few pixels for the desired scale, or simply omits content below the fold. For a basic Chrome Headless capture, set --window-size=WIDTH,HEIGHT alongside --screenshot, then inspect the PNG’s actual dimensions. If those dimensions are correct but the image looks underscaled, investigate headless screen scale; if the image cuts off the page, use a full-page capture method instead.
Diagnose what “low resolution” means
A screenshot can look too small or incomplete for different reasons. Compare the intended CSS viewport with the PNG’s pixel dimensions, then check whether the page content itself rendered before capture.

| What you see | Likely issue | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The screenshot’s width or height is smaller than intended | Capture window or viewport dimensions | Set explicit dimensions with --window-size and verify the output file. |
| The layout has the expected dimensions, but the PNG has fewer pixels than expected | Pixel scale or device scale factor | Check headless screen scale configuration and your automation library’s device emulation settings. |
| The image dimensions are right, but content below the fold is missing | Viewport-only capture | Use a full-page screenshot method; increasing the viewport or pixel scale is not the same as capturing the full document. |
| Elements are missing or unfinished | Capture occurred before rendering completed | Adjust capture wait or timeout behavior. |
Record the installed Chrome version, capture command or automation API, intended CSS viewport, desired PNG pixel dimensions, and actual PNG dimensions. Those details distinguish the four cases.
Set the capture window size for a CLI screenshot
Chrome’s command-line reference pairs --screenshot with --window-size to control the capture window. For example, this requests a 412-by-892 window:

chrome --headless --window-size=412,892 --screenshot=shot.png https://example.com
Replace chrome with the executable name or path for your installation, and replace the URL and dimensions with your target. Chrome documents --window-size=412,892 as an example in its Headless command-line reference.
- Run the command with explicit width and height.
- Inspect the resulting PNG’s pixel dimensions using your image viewer or image-processing tool.
- Compare those dimensions with what you intended to request. If the width and height are correct, do not keep enlarging the window to solve a scale-factor problem.
The window dimensions determine the capture area. They do not, by themselves, establish that the output has the higher pixel density you may expect.

Check headless screen scale when the output has too few pixels
If the CSS layout is the right size but the image has fewer pixels than expected, investigate the device scale factor or headless screen scale separately from the viewport. Chrome’s virtual-screen documentation describes headless screen properties, including size and scale factor, as configurable independently of physical displays attached to the machine.
Chrome documents --screen-info for static virtual-screen configuration. These newer virtual-screen capabilities are available in stable Chrome starting with version 142, so check your installed version before relying on that switch. See Chrome’s virtual-screen configuration guide for the supported configuration and details.

If you use Puppeteer or another automation library, check its version-specific screenshot and device-emulation options. Chrome’s virtual-screen guide says the new capabilities are supported by Puppeteer; do not assume that an option or syntax from one library release applies to another.
Use full-page capture when lower content is missing
A screenshot with correct pixel dimensions can still show only the visible viewport. That is a capture-coverage issue, not low resolution. Chrome’s older Headless shell documentation notes that full-page screenshots require additional handling: use a full-page capture facility provided by your automation API or another method appropriate to your Chrome and library versions. Simply increasing the window size or scale does not guarantee capture of the entire document.

Wait for the page to render before capture
If content is missing because the page has not finished loading, Chrome’s --timeout option lets screenshot capture wait up to a specified time even if the page is still loading. For time-dependent scripts, Chrome also documents --virtual-time-budget. These options can change when Chrome captures the page; they do not increase pixel density.

Choose a wait appropriate to the page’s behavior, then check whether the missing content appears. A longer wait cannot fix an incorrect viewport, scale factor, or full-page setting.
Troubleshoot common capture problems
- PNG is smaller than the requested viewport: Confirm that
--window-size=WIDTH,HEIGHTis present in the CLI invocation and inspect the actual file produced. If using a library, review its viewport configuration for your installed version. - Viewport looks right, but pixel dimensions are still too small: Check device scale or virtual-screen scale. On stable Chrome 142 or later, consult the
--screen-infovirtual-screen configuration documentation. - Bottom of the page is absent: Switch from a viewport screenshot to a full-page screenshot facility. Raising the viewport dimensions is not a substitute for full-document capture.
- Page elements are blank or incomplete: Adjust the screenshot timeout or wait for relevant page activity to finish. Timing options affect readiness, not resolution.
- A virtual-screen option is not recognized: Check the installed Chrome version; the newer virtual-screen capabilities described by Chrome are available in stable releases beginning with version 142.
- Automation settings do not behave as expected: Match screenshot and device-emulation configuration to the exact version of Puppeteer or other library in use.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request returns an image or PDF; for a straightforward screenshot, use this cURL example:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API setup and options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server lets AI agents use screenshot tools, and the service includes 1,000 screenshots a month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for the free plan.

Does increasing --window-size make a screenshot higher density?
It changes the capture window dimensions. If the layout size is already right but you need more output pixels, check the device or headless screen scale separately.
Does --timeout improve screenshot resolution?
No. It can give a page more time to load before capture, but it does not change pixel density.
