If iPhone video audio sounds low or muffled, start by removing anything that could cover the microphones, then compare a Voice Memo with short Camera clips recorded using each camera. Those checks can help distinguish an obstruction, an app-specific problem, a recording setting, or a symptom that needs service—but they do not identify a failed component on their own.
1. Remove anything covering the microphones
Take off the iPhone case, film, or screen protector temporarily. Check the microphone openings for debris and clear them gently; avoid pushing objects into an opening or using liquids or force. Apple recommends removing coverings and clearing debris as an initial check in its microphone troubleshooting guide.

Make a brief video after removing an accessory and replay it in a quiet place. Comparing it with the original clip can show whether an obstruction may have contributed.

Test more than one recording path instead of judging the phone from a single clip. Apple’s suggested checks use Voice Memos and Camera recordings made with both cameras.

- Open Voice Memos and record a short sentence while speaking toward the bottom of the iPhone. Replay it.
- Open Camera, record a short video while speaking toward the top of the iPhone, and replay it.
- Switch to the other camera, record another short video while speaking toward the top, and replay that clip too.
If one test sounds different from another, note which app and camera produced the unclear audio. The comparison can help localize the symptom, but it is not a hardware diagnosis. Apple outlines these checks in its microphone troubleshooting guide.
3. Check microphone access if only one app is affected
If Voice Memos and Camera recordings sound clear but a particular third-party app records poorly, check whether that app can use the microphone. On current iOS versions, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and check the app’s access. If the labels differ, search for “Microphone” in Settings.

If access is already enabled—or the app does not appear in the list—Apple advises contacting the app developer. The permission setting applies to that app; it does not repair or alter the iPhone’s built-in microphones.

Available recording controls depend on the iPhone model and iOS version. Apple’s current guide says iPhone 16 or later can record video using Spatial Audio, Stereo, or Mono. On those models, wind noise is automatically reduced when recording in Spatial Audio or Stereo, and Wind Noise Reduction can be turned off. Apple says earlier iPhone models record in Stereo.

Where the controls are available, look under Settings > Camera > Record Sound. Identify your model before following instructions for a specific option: Apple’s separate camera guide also documents turning off Record Stereo Sound on supported models, while the newer sound choices apply to iPhone 16 or later. These controls affect the recording format or wind-noise handling. Changing them is worth trying when the setting matches the symptom, but it is not a guaranteed fix for quiet or muffled audio.

5. Decide whether an external microphone fits your recording
For an interview or presentation, a microphone closer to the speaker may capture their voice more directly than a phone held farther away. First confirm that the intended iPhone, iOS version, camera app, and microphone support the connection and recording workflow.
- Supported AirPods or AirPods Pro: Apple says supported models can act as a microphone for video in supported camera apps. This is an optional recording method, not a repair for an obstructed or damaged built-in microphone. Check Apple’s sound recording options guide for compatibility details.
- External USB microphone: Apple documents selecting an input device and adjusting input gain in certain supported recording and video-call workflows. That does not establish compatibility with every camera app, including the built-in Camera app. Check the microphone maker’s requirements for the app, connector, and power setup; Apple’s audio and video-call guide covers supported workflows.
6. Get service if the built-in tests still sound unclear
If recordings remain unclear in Voice Memos and Camera after removing coverings and checking the relevant app access or sound options, Apple recommends seeking service. The tests above cannot determine which component is affected, what repair is needed, or what it will cost. Contact Apple or an authorized service provider for an assessment; Apple’s troubleshooting guide describes when to seek help.
