If The Witcher 3 is running slowly or hitching on PC, start with the game’s official troubleshooting steps: clean-install the graphics driver, verify the game files, disable overlays, and close unnecessary background apps. Then test resolution and graphics settings one at a time in the same game location. There is no universal FPS target or single fix: results depend on the PC, settings, output resolution, and what is happening on screen.
1. Record a baseline before changing settings
Make a note of the game version and, if the launcher offers both, whether you start the DirectX 11 or DirectX 12 version. Record your resolution, graphics preset, ray tracing state, GPU and CPU, and whether the problem is consistently low frame rates or brief stutters.

Test in the same location and a similar scene after each change. CD PROJEKT RED says its published FPS targets are based on QA tests and that performance can vary with system configuration, graphics settings, output resolution, scene, and gameplay. A result from a different scene or configuration is not a reliable comparison for your PC. See the current official PC requirements and performance notes.

- Clean-install the graphics driver. CD PROJEKT RED recommends removing the previous driver before installing a current one. Its support instructions link to NVIDIA’s driver downloads and recommend AMD Cleanup Utility before a clean AMD driver installation. If the stuttering began immediately after a driver update, the developer recommends installing the previous driver version and reporting the issue. Follow the instructions for your GPU and driver.
- Verify the game files. Use the file-verification option in the launcher or store where you installed the game. The exact menu path varies by platform.
- Disable overlay features temporarily. Test with overlays disabled, including those for Discord, Ubisoft Connect, or GOG Galaxy, or temporarily disable the associated apps.
- Close unnecessary applications before launching. CD PROJEKT RED specifically includes hardware-monitoring and antivirus or anti-malware programs in its troubleshooting advice. Treat this as a temporary diagnostic test: do not leave security software disabled as a general fix.
These are the developer’s general troubleshooting recommendations, not a guarantee that any one step will resolve every performance problem. Read CD PROJEKT RED’s low-FPS support instructions.
3. Reduce graphics load methodically
Lower the output resolution or reduce demanding graphics settings, then repeat the same scene. Change one variable per test; lowering several settings together may improve performance but make it harder to identify what mattered. Higher resolution can significantly affect FPS, and CD PROJEKT RED also identifies graphics settings as a performance variable.
Resolution
Try a lower output resolution as a diagnostic. If performance improves noticeably, the graphics workload is a likely factor; decide whether the frame-rate gain is worth the softer image. The amount of improvement depends on the system and scene.

Graphics settings and ray tracing
Reduce graphics settings gradually and compare results. If your build exposes ray tracing or upscaling options, test those separately rather than assuming one configuration is best for every PC. The trade-off is between visual quality and performance; the available options and their effects depend on your hardware and game configuration.
Do not apply a preset or promise yourself a particular FPS without accounting for your GPU, CPU, resolution, and preferred image quality. The official performance guidance does not establish one setting or graphics API as the right choice for all systems.
4. Check the installation drive and game version
Storage: HDD or SSD
CD PROJEKT RED’s current PC requirements state that an SSD is required for the latest technical enhancements, and describe faster loading and smoother asset streaming as benefits. If the game is installed on an HDD, moving it to a suitable SSD is a reasonable step to consider, particularly if loading or asset streaming is part of the problem. The requirement is not evidence that an SSD will fix every cause of low FPS or stuttering, or guarantee a particular average-FPS increase.

Version and platform availability
The official requirements page identifies version 1.32 (Classic) as an earlier version players may be able to return to, and says version 4.04 will also be available after The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered releases. These options depend on platform and release timing; they are not a universal or permanent fix. Check your platform’s current instructions and CD PROJEKT RED’s support notice before changing versions. Check the current requirements and version information.
5. Contact support with a reproducible example
If the troubleshooting steps do not resolve the issue, send CD PROJEKT RED a video showing the problem if possible. If it happens only in a particular location, include the relevant save file. The support article lists this save folder: %userprofile%DocumentsThe Witcher 3gamesaves.
Include the baseline details you recorded—game version, graphics API option if available, resolution, settings, GPU and CPU—and describe where the issue occurs and whether it is persistent or an intermittent hitch. That gives support a reproducible context rather than a general report that the game feels slow. Use the official low-FPS support article.
