How to Fix Loudness Differences Between Videos in a YouTube Playlist

YouTube’s Stable volume setting can reduce loudness changes between playlist videos when available. Here’s where to find it and what to try if it’s missing.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start playback, open the YouTube player’s Settings, and turn on Stable volume if it appears. YouTube says it balances quiet and loud levels to reduce sound variations, and is on by default when supported. It is not available for every video, and is off for YouTube Music and official music videos.

Turn on Stable volume in the YouTube player

  1. Start a video in the playlist.
  2. Open the player’s Settings menu.
  3. Select Stable volume if the option is shown.
  4. Continue to the next playlist item and listen for whether the difference is less distracting.

YouTube documents the control for computer and TV playback, but availability varies. The exact device, app version, and video determine which options appear; the setting is not guaranteed for every title or player.

If speech is hard to hear, try Voice boost

When dialogue is masked by music or other background sound, check the player’s audio settings for Voice boost. YouTube describes it as reducing background sounds and highlighting vocals. It is intended to help make speech clearer, not to make every playlist item equally loud. Enabling Voice boost automatically turns Stable volume off, so the two controls should not be expected to work together.

Why playlist videos sound different

Separate videos can have different perceived loudness even when played at the same volume setting. Loudness normalization estimates perceived program loudness and adjusts gain toward a chosen target. This differs from peak normalization, which measures signal peaks rather than how loud varied audio tends to sound to listeners.

CT Sounds CT-7EQ 7 Band 1/2 Din Parametric Car Audio Equalizer
  • The CT-7EQ is a 7 band 1/2 din parametric car audio equalizer designed to divide and enhance the segment of frequency for your car audio application
  • Car audio equalizer featuring 7 bands that divide 20Hz - 20kHz into 7 segments
  • Parametric Equalizer : 50Hz, 125Hz, 315Hz, 750Hz, 2.2KHz, 12KHz
  • Frequency Response : 25Hz-50KHz; Output Level: +16dB; Separation: >60dB; Bass Adjust: ±10dB; Mid Adjust : ±10dB; Treble Adjust: ±10dB; Sub Bass : 43Hz & 60Hz
  • Included with the car equalizer are installation brackets and hardware

The Audio Engineering Society gives an illustrative example: audio measured at -27 LUFS would need a +3 LU adjustment to reach its example target of -24 LUFS. That is an explanation of normalization arithmetic, not a YouTube loudness target or a setting viewers can choose. LUFS is a measurement unit, not a universal YouTube playback control.

If Stable volume is missing

  • YouTube says Stable volume is not available for all videos.
  • YouTube Help says the feature is off for YouTube Music and official music videos.
  • Availability also depends on the device and player version, so a missing control does not necessarily indicate a problem with your account.

If it is not shown, there is no viewer-side setting in this guidance that can force normalization across arbitrary videos in the playlist. Headphones or speakers may change overall sound quality or listening level, but they do not equalize the loudness of separate videos.

If you own the videos: normalize the source audio

Creators who can edit the source files can use an audio editor’s loudness-normalization effect to measure perceived loudness and apply gain toward a chosen target. Audacity lists making a relatively uniform playlist as one use for its Loudness Normalization effect. This changes files or project audio you control; it cannot change videos hosted by other channels for a viewer.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the playlist is part of a YouTube channel you keep live around the clock, StreamNeo is a separate way to run uploaded videos continuously: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so a computer and home connection do not have to stay on. StreamNeo sends the video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. This keeps a stream running; it does not normalize source audio, and it streams to YouTube only. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
