They use different settings. On iOS 16 or later, rebuild a missing Lock Screen widget through touch and hold the Lock Screen > Customise > Add Widgets. For Today View while the phone is locked, enable Today View and Search under Settings > Face ID & Passcode (or Touch ID & Passcode) > Allow Access When Locked. If information is merely stale, determine whether it is a Live Activity; ordinary widgets do not have a documented universal refresh button or guaranteed update interval.
Apple describes Lock Screen widgets as a way to see information such as temperature, air quality, battery level and upcoming calendar events at a glance. The practical fix depends on the surface and on whether iOS or the individual app controls the missing information.

First identify what is missing
Look at the exact place where you expected the information to appear. Apple documents three related but separate features, and using the wrong instructions can make a working feature seem broken.

A widget that is absent from the Lock Screen editor is a different problem from a widget that is present but displays an old value. Start with the matching row instead of changing unrelated passcode or notification settings.

Put a missing widget back on the Lock Screen
These are Apple’s documented editing steps for iOS 16 and later. Keep the phone on the Lock Screen while you begin.
- Touch and hold the Lock Screen. Continue until the Lock Screen chooser and the Customise button appear.
- Tap Customise. Choose Lock Screen if the interface asks whether you want to edit the Lock Screen or Home Screen.
- Tap Add Widgets. A widget picker opens below the clock.
- Choose the widget. Tap a widget to place it, or drag it into the available slot. Some apps offer multiple sizes or styles, so select the one that fits the information you need.
- Tap Done. The edited Lock Screen becomes active when you select it in the Lock Screen chooser.
Apple notes that the widget area has limited room. If the widget will not fit, remove one already in the layout and then add the desired widget. A widget being unavailable in the picker is not solved by repeatedly tapping an occupied slot; the layout must have space and the app must expose a Lock Screen widget.
If the editor does not appear
Lock Screen widgets require iOS 16 or later. If the phone is running an earlier release, the documented Lock Screen widget editor is not available. Check the iOS version before treating the missing editor as an app failure. The exact labels can also vary slightly by iPhone model and software release, but the documented sequence begins with touching and holding the Lock Screen.

If the widget is listed but will not stay in the layout
Return to Add Widgets, remove an existing item to create room, add the desired widget, and finish with Done. Confirm that you edited the Lock Screen you actually use; iOS can store more than one Lock Screen, and adding a widget to a different saved layout will not change the one currently displayed.
Do not confuse the Lock Screen with Today View
Today View is the widget screen reached by swiping right. It is not the row of widgets directly beneath the Lock Screen clock. If swiping right while the iPhone is locked shows no widgets, change the locked-access permission rather than editing the Lock Screen layout.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Face ID & Passcode on an iPhone that uses Face ID, or Touch ID & Passcode on a model that uses Touch ID.
- Enter the device passcode if requested.
- Under Allow Access When Locked, turn on Today View and Search.
- Lock the iPhone and swipe right from the Lock Screen to test Today View.
This switch controls access to Today View while the phone is locked. It does not add widgets to the Lock Screen’s own widget area, and enabling it will not make a missing app widget appear in the Add Widgets picker.

Check whether the item is a Live Activity
Live Activities are designed for current progress rather than a static glanceable value. Apple gives directions, sports updates and delivery orders as examples. A Live Activity can therefore look like a widget to a reader even though it follows a different system and app configuration.
Find an app’s Live Activities setting
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Choose the app that should provide the activity.
- Look for Live Activities and review its setting.
Not every app has a Live Activities setting. Its absence does not indicate a damaged iPhone; it can mean that the developer has not provided that feature for the app. If the control exists, use it when the activity is missing or not appearing. The app also needs an active event to report—there is no permanent Live Activity for an app that has nothing in progress.
Tell a Live Activity from an ordinary widget
An ordinary widget may show a snapshot such as a temperature, battery level or upcoming calendar event. A Live Activity represents an ongoing event and is expected to change as that event progresses. If your complaint concerns a score, route or order status, troubleshoot the app’s Live Activities support first rather than deleting an unrelated Lock Screen widget.

When a normal widget shows old information
Apple’s consumer guidance explains how to add Lock Screen widgets and how to allow Today View while locked, but it does not define one refresh command or a guaranteed update interval for all ordinary widgets. Apps and iOS decide when a widget’s data is supplied. Consequently, an old value does not establish one universal cause, and a single restart or setting cannot be promised as a cure for every app.
Use a controlled check
- Record the exact symptom. Note the widget name, the value it shows, where it appears and the approximate time the value became stale.
- Confirm the surface. Decide whether it is in the Lock Screen layout, Today View or a Live Activity. Follow only that feature’s path.
- Open the app that owns the widget. Check whether the app itself displays current information. This separates an app-data problem from a Lock Screen presentation problem without assuming a particular refresh schedule.
- Revisit the widget layout. Touch and hold the Lock Screen, choose Customise, remove the affected widget and add it again through Add Widgets. Finish with Done.
- Observe the result under the same conditions. If it remains stale while the app has current data, note the iPhone model, iOS version and app version before seeking support. Those details let the app developer or Apple Support investigate the specific implementation.
Re-adding is a layout repair, not a promise that the app will refresh on demand. If the app has no current data to provide, editing the Lock Screen cannot manufacture a newer value.
What you can and cannot infer from a stale value
- A stale ordinary widget does not prove that Today View access is disabled; that setting affects the swipe-right view while locked.
- A missing Live Activities switch does not prove that the phone is incompatible; Apple notes that not every app supplies the control.
- A widget visible in the picker is not proof that its data will update at a fixed interval. No universal cadence is documented for ordinary widgets.
- A widget that disappears only on one saved Lock Screen may have been added to another Lock Screen layout.

Common mistakes that waste time
Changing the wrong locked-access switch
Today View and Search is the relevant permission for the swipe-right panel while locked. It is not the control for widgets placed directly below the Lock Screen clock. Editing the Lock Screen is the correct route for that row.
Expecting a Live Activity to behave like a calendar or weather widget
Live Activities depend on an app reporting an ongoing event. A static widget and an active delivery or sports update are different types of Lock Screen content, so their settings and failure modes differ.
Assuming every app has the same controls
Apple’s documentation does not establish that every app supplies a Live Activities switch or the same widget options. Avoid instructions that tell readers to look for a setting an app may legitimately not provide.
Adding widgets until the layout is full
The Lock Screen widget area has limited space. When the picker refuses an item, remove an existing widget first instead of interpreting the lack of room as a software fault.

Looking for a guaranteed refresh timer
Apple’s public guidance reviewed here does not promise a universal update interval for ordinary widgets. A value can be stale without there being a single system-wide refresh button to press.
When to contact the app developer or Apple Support
Escalate after you have identified the correct surface, confirmed the iOS requirement, checked the relevant locked-access or Live Activities setting, and re-added the widget where appropriate. Include:
- the iPhone model and iOS version;
- the app name and its version;
- whether the item is a Lock Screen widget, Today View widget or Live Activity;
- whether the app itself shows current information;
- the exact steps that reproduce the missing or stale result; and
- whether the problem affects one saved Lock Screen or every layout.
Contact the app developer when the app’s own data is wrong or its widget or Live Activity is unavailable. Contact Apple Support when the documented Lock Screen editor, locked Today View access or system presentation behaves differently from these steps across apps. Neither route requires buying hardware or an accessory; the documented remedies are software and configuration checks.
