Most Let’s Encrypt errors on Apache are caused by a failed validation path, not by the certificate itself. First identify whether the failure is ACME validation, Apache installation/reload, or a later renewal. Then verify DNS (including IPv6), make the exact HTTP-01 challenge URL reachable on port 80, confirm Apache’s listener and virtual host, use the current Certbot files, and prove renewal with a dry run.

Identify which part failed
Certbot performs two different jobs. An authenticator proves that you control each requested hostname by answering an ACME challenge. An installer changes Apache’s configuration and may reload the service. A successful authorization does not guarantee that Apache was configured correctly, and a working HTTPS site does not prove that a future renewal challenge will work.

| Symptom | Likely stage | First checks |
|---|---|---|
| Timeout, connection refused, or “connection” failure during authorization | ACME validation | DNS A/AAAA records, firewall, NAT, port 80 listener, load balancer forwarding |
| 404 or an unexpected page at the challenge URL | ACME validation | Selected virtual host, webroot, rewrites, proxy rules, token-file permissions |
| Authorization succeeds but Certbot cannot install the certificate | Apache installation | Apache syntax, enabled modules, file paths, sudo privileges, conflicting SSL directives |
| Apache fails after a certificate change | Reload or configuration | apachectl configtest, error log, certificate/key pairing, readable key |
| Initial issuance worked but renewal fails later | Renewal | Current DNS and routing, renewal configuration, hooks, permissions, and a dry run |
Do not repeatedly request certificates while the same validation error remains. Correct the routing or authorization problem first; repeated failed requests can encounter certificate-issuance rate limits.
Check DNS before changing Apache
Let’s Encrypt validates every hostname in the order requested. Each name must resolve to the public endpoint that can answer its challenge. A record that displays the right website in a browser is not enough if another address is returned to the validation service.

Verify A and AAAA records
- List the IPv4 address returned for the hostname:
dig +short A example.com. - List IPv6 addresses:
dig +short AAAA example.com. - Run the same checks for every
ServerAliasand every name on the certificate. - Compare each result with the public address of the Apache host, reverse proxy, or load balancer that is meant to serve the site.
An AAAA record is particularly easy to overlook. If IPv6 reaches an old machine, a host without Apache, or a firewall that drops port 80, Let’s Encrypt can fail even though IPv4 testing succeeds. Remove an obsolete record or fix the IPv6 route before retrying.
Check delegation and split DNS
Test from a network outside your office or private VPN. Internal DNS may return an address that external validators cannot reach. Confirm that the authoritative nameservers publish the same records you expect, and allow time for a deliberate DNS change to propagate before starting another authorization.

For HTTP-01, Let’s Encrypt requests a URL in this form:
http://example.com/.well-known/acme-challenge/<TOKEN>
The token is temporary, so you cannot test the final token in advance. You can, however, test the path, host routing, redirect behavior, and file permissions with a temporary file in the same webroot.
Create a harmless probe file
- Find the document root used by the intended port-80 virtual host, such as
/var/www/example. - Create the directory and a test file as the same user or deployment process that Certbot uses:
sudo mkdir -p /var/www/example/.well-known/acme-challengeandprintf 'acme-proben' | sudo tee /var/www/example/.well-known/acme-challenge/probe.txt. - Request it locally with the correct host header:
curl -i -H 'Host: example.com' http://127.0.0.1/.well-known/acme-challenge/probe.txt. - Request the public URL from an external network:
curl -i http://example.com/.well-known/acme-challenge/probe.txt. - Delete the probe after testing.
Expect an HTTP 200 response containing exactly acme-probe. A redirect can be acceptable when it preserves the challenge path and ultimately serves the file over HTTP or HTTPS, but test the complete chain rather than assuming every redirect is safe.
Interpret the response
- 404: The request reached a web server, but not the expected token content. Common causes are the wrong virtual host, an incorrect webroot, a rewrite that intercepts
.well-known, a proxy sending the request elsewhere, or a file that the Apache worker cannot read. - 301/302 loop or an application page: A rewrite, front-controller rule, authentication layer, or proxy is handling the challenge path. Exclude
/.well-known/acme-challenge/from those rules. - 403: Directory or file permissions, an Apache
Requirerule, mandatory access control, or a security module is denying access. - Timeout: Check the firewall, cloud security rules, NAT, load balancer health, and whether port 80 is listening on the public address.
- Connection refused: No process is accepting the connection at that address and port, or a firewall is actively rejecting it.
- Correct content locally but not publicly: DNS, IPv6, a proxy, or an upstream load balancer is directing external requests to a different machine.
Confirm Apache listeners and virtual hosts
HTTP-01 normally requires public port 80. Apache’s managed-certificate documentation also requires public reachability on port 80 and/or 443 unless a DNS challenge is configured. Challenge selection follows the ports Apache listens on and any explicit challenge settings.

Check listeners
- Inspect the configured listeners:
sudo grep -R '^Listen' /etc/apache2/ports.conf /etc/httpd/conf* 2>/dev/null. - Check the running sockets:
sudo ss -ltnp | grep -E ':(80|443)b'. - Ensure the firewall permits inbound TCP 80 for HTTP-01 and TCP 443 for normal HTTPS service.
- If a router or provider performs NAT, forward port 80 to the Apache host, not merely to an internal web server that lacks the certificate files.
Check the selected virtual host
On Debian- and Ubuntu-family systems, run sudo apachectl -S; on other distributions use the equivalent Apache control command. Confirm that the intended *:80 virtual host contains the correct ServerName, every required ServerAlias, and the document root that contains the challenge directory. The first matching virtual host can serve an unexpected site when a name is missing or misspelled.
If a reverse proxy or load balancer sits in front of Apache, make sure it forwards the original host and the complete /.well-known/acme-challenge/ path. A healthy application response proves only that the application route works; it does not prove that the ACME path reaches the same backend.
Keep rewrites and application routing away from the challenge
Many sites redirect all HTTP requests, send unknown paths to an index controller, or require a login. Add an explicit exception for the challenge directory before broad rewrite rules. For example, in a suitable port-80 virtual host or .htaccess context:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^/.well-known/acme-challenge/ - [L]
The exact syntax depends on where the rule is placed; do not paste a virtual-host rule into a context that does not permit it. Also check proxy, authentication, caching, and web-application firewall rules. The exception must still map to the directory where Certbot writes tokens.
If the site must redirect HTTP to HTTPS, verify that the challenge URL follows one simple, reachable redirect and is not rewritten to a login page, a different hostname, or an HTTPS virtual host with a certificate problem. During troubleshooting, temporarily narrowing the port-80 virtual host to a static challenge directory can make routing unambiguous.
Verify Certbot’s webroot and file permissions
A 404 often means Certbot wrote the token to one directory while Apache served another. Use the webroot explicitly when obtaining or renewing:

Replace the path and names with the values used by the port-80 virtual host. If different hostnames have different document roots, provide a separate -w before each corresponding -d group.
Check traversal and read access
- Every parent directory must allow the Apache worker to traverse it (execute permission on directories).
- The challenge directory and token file must be readable by that worker.
- Do not make the private key world-readable just to solve a webroot problem; challenge files and private keys have different permission requirements.
- On systems with mandatory access control, inspect the security audit log if Unix permissions look correct but Apache still returns 403.
After an authorization attempt, inspect the temporary token location while the request is active. A missing file indicates a Certbot or hook problem; a present file that returns 404 indicates Apache routing or an incorrect webroot.

Use DNS-01 when HTTP cannot be exposed
DNS-01 proves control by publishing a TXT record under _acme-challenge. It avoids inbound HTTP and is the challenge route documented here that supports wildcard certificates. It is appropriate for a firewalled or private origin, a service behind an architecture that cannot forward port 80, or names such as *.example.com.
Manual DNS-01 sequence
- Start Certbot with a DNS-01-capable authenticator and note the exact TXT value it requests.
- Create the TXT record at the requested
_acme-challengename. Do not put the value in an A record or in the application’s webroot. - Query the authoritative DNS service, for example with
dig TXT _acme-challenge.example.com, and wait until the new value is published. - Only then allow Certbot to continue validation.
- Remove obsolete TXT values after confirming which authorization is active. Multiple legitimate values may temporarily be required when several names are being validated.
Propagation time is controlled by DNS providers and cached resolvers. A local query that sees the record does not guarantee that every authoritative server does. DNS plugins can automate publication, but the API credentials need tightly restricted permissions and must be available during every renewal.
Why DNS-01 is different from HTTP-01
| Characteristic | HTTP-01 | DNS-01 |
|---|---|---|
| Required control | Public HTTP reachability on port 80 and correct host routing | Authoritative DNS control and TXT publication under _acme-challenge |
| Wildcard issuance | Not supported for wildcard validation | Supports wildcard certificates |
| Good fit | Ordinary hostnames on a server that can expose port 80 | Wildcards, private origins, firewalled hosts, or unreachable HTTP architectures |
| Typical failure | Wrong DNS, firewall/NAT, wrong vhost, rewrite, timeout, refusal, or 404 | Missing, mistyped, stale, or not-yet-published TXT record |
Point Apache at the correct certificate files
Certbot maintains current certificate material as symlinks in /etc/letsencrypt/live/<domain>/. Configure Apache to use those live paths rather than copying a dated file from an archive directory.
SSLCertificateFile /etc/letsencrypt/live/example.com/fullchain.pem
SSLCertificateKeyFile /etc/letsencrypt/live/example.com/privkey.pem
Apache 2.4.8 and newer should use fullchain.pem for SSLCertificateFile; it contains the server certificate followed by the intermediate chain. Use privkey.pem for SSLCertificateKeyFile. Older Apache versions may require cert.pem together with chain.pem.

Protect and test the private key
Keep privkey.pem secret. The Apache service must be able to read it through controlled ownership, group membership, or an appropriate mode, while unprivileged users must not gain access. If the key is unreadable, Apache will fail during startup or reload; changing it to a world-readable mode is an unsafe workaround.
When diagnosing a mismatch, compare the public certificate and key modulus or use Apache/OpenSSL inspection commands appropriate to your platform. A certificate from one hostname paired with a key from another can produce a configuration error even when both files exist.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Validate configuration and reload safely
- Run a syntax test before touching the running service:
sudo apachectl configtest. Proceed only when it reports a valid configuration. - Inspect the Apache error log for the exact file, directive, permission, or module named in the failure. Common locations include
/var/log/apache2/error.logand/var/log/httpd/error_log. - Check that the SSL module and the virtual host configuration are enabled on your distribution.
- Reload gracefully with your service manager, for example
sudo systemctl reload apache2orsudo systemctl reload httpd. Use a restart only when a reload is unavailable or cannot apply the change. - Request the site again and inspect the served certificate, hostname, expiration, and chain from an external client.
Certbot’s Apache installer and reload operations require sudo-level privileges. If a control panel, deployment user, or automation account runs Certbot, grant only the commands and file access it needs rather than broad, permanent administrative access.
Prove that renewal will work
Issuance is a one-time event; renewal is an operational process. Run:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
sudo certbot renew --dry-run
The dry run exercises the stored renewal method without replacing the live certificate. Treat any failure as a production defect to fix before the certificate approaches expiration.
Inspect renewal state and logs
- Review the renewal definitions in
/etc/letsencrypt/renewal/for the authenticator, domains, webroot, and hooks actually in use. - Read
/var/log/letsencrypt/to correlate the failure with a DNS response, HTTP status, permission error, or reload failure. - Verify that a scheduled timer or cron job invokes Certbot and that its execution user can access the webroot, DNS API credentials, and Apache reload command.
- Test deploy or post-renewal hooks separately. A renewed file is not useful if Apache continues serving an older certificate until it reloads.
Certificates obtained with Certbot’s manual plugin do not renew automatically unless authentication hooks are supplied. If you cannot automate the DNS or HTTP proof, schedule a documented manual renewal process and monitor its deadline.
Best Value
Targeted fixes for common errors
| Error or observation | Action |
|---|---|
| “Connection refused” on port 80 | Start or enable Apache, add Listen 80, open the firewall, and correct NAT or load-balancer forwarding. |
| “Timeout during connect” | Check security groups, provider firewalls, routing, IPv6, and whether the public address is actually the Apache host. |
| HTTP-01 returns 404 | Use apachectl -S, verify ServerName/ServerAlias, match the Certbot webroot to DocumentRoot, and bypass rewrites and proxies for /.well-known/acme-challenge/. |
| HTTP-01 returns 403 | Fix directory traversal and file-read permissions, Apache authorization rules, and mandatory-access-control labels. |
| TXT record not found | Query the authoritative nameservers, correct the record name or value, wait for publication, and remove only stale values that are no longer part of an active authorization. |
| Apache reports a certificate/key error | Use the matching fullchain.pem and privkey.pem under /etc/letsencrypt/live/, confirm key readability, and run apachectl configtest. |
| Renewal succeeds but the old certificate is served | Check the configured live symlinks and deploy/reload hook, then perform a graceful Apache reload. |
Final pre-renewal checklist
- Every certificate hostname has the intended A and AAAA records.
- The selected challenge method matches the network design: public port 80 for HTTP-01 or authoritative TXT control for DNS-01.
- The exact challenge path reaches the intended Apache virtual host without authentication or application rewrites.
- Certbot’s webroot is the same directory Apache serves.
- Apache points to
fullchain.pemandprivkey.pemin the live directory, with the key protected but readable by the daemon. apachectl configtestpasses before every reload.certbot renew --dry-runpasses, and its logs and hooks are monitored.
The practical rule is simple: troubleshoot the validation path first, the Apache installation second, and renewal as a separate test. A browser showing HTTPS can coexist with a broken ACME challenge, so always test the route Let’s Encrypt actually uses.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I obtain a wildcard certificate if port 80 is blocked?
Yes. Use DNS-01 and publish the required TXT record under _acme-challenge; HTTP-01 does not support wildcard issuance.
Why does HTTPS work while renewal fails?
The existing certificate can keep serving normally while DNS, port-80 routing, the webroot, TXT automation, or a renewal hook has changed. Run certbot renew --dry-run and inspect the renewal files and logs.
Should Apache use cert.pem or fullchain.pem?
For Apache 2.4.8 and newer, use fullchain.pem for SSLCertificateFile and privkey.pem for SSLCertificateKeyFile. Older Apache versions may require cert.pem plus chain.pem.
What does a 404 from the ACME URL mean?
The request reached a web server, but the expected token was not served. Check DNS and IPv6, virtual-host selection, the Certbot webroot, rewrite or proxy rules, and file readability.
Do manually issued certificates renew by themselves?
Not when they were created with Certbot’s manual plugin, unless authentication hooks are provided. Use an automated authenticator or maintain a documented manual process.
