Spikes in its cyan network-time line point to variable network timing; if the line stays steady, investigate the game’s frame rate and the host PC’s encoding performance. Then adjust the likely cause before considering new hardware.
Check whether the stutter is coming from the network
Steam Link for Android streams a game from a PC using Steam Remote Play. Valve lists Android 5.0 and newer for the app and recommends a 5 GHz wireless router for streaming. Valve’s Steam Link for Android page describes the app and its requirements.

- Open Steam’s Remote Play advanced streaming settings and enable the performance overlay. The exact menu wording can vary between Steam versions.
- Reconnect and play the same section where you normally notice a hitch, watching the overlay as it happens.
- Look for large spikes in the cyan network-time line. Valve says these indicate highly variable network time and usually coincide with video stuttering or freezing. A steady line does not prove the network is faultless, but it makes host game performance or encoding worth checking next. See Valve’s Remote Play troubleshooting guidance.
If network time spikes, improve the connection first
Use Ethernet for the host PC if possible
Connect the PC running Steam and the game to the router with Ethernet where practical. This removes the host’s wireless link from the streaming path, though the Android device will still depend on its Wi-Fi connection.

Strengthen the Android device’s Wi-Fi
- Connect the Android device to the 5 GHz Wi-Fi network if your router provides one.
- Reduce competing wireless activity, such as large downloads or another simultaneous stream, while you test.
- Move the router and device to improve signal; walls, distance, and interference can affect wireless performance.
Valve recommends a wired host connection where possible and a strong, low-interference Wi-Fi connection for the client. Its Remote Play network guidance covers these steps.

Lower streaming quality or limit bandwidth
In Remote Play streaming settings, try the Balanced or Fast quality preset, or set a bandwidth limit. Valve suggests starting at 3 Mbit/s and raising the limit gradually until hitches appear, then stepping back. This is a tuning method—not a universal bandwidth requirement—and the right setting depends on the game, resolution, and network. Consult Valve’s suggested Remote Play settings.
If network time looks stable, check the host PC
Low streaming framerate can result from a game running slowly or from slow encoding on the host. These checks help separate those causes from a network-timing problem.

Reduce the stream and game resolution
Lower the stream resolution in Remote Play settings. Valve gives 1280×720 as an example in its low streaming framerate troubleshooting guide. If that does not help, reduce the game’s own display resolution and test again.
Test host encoding and reduce competing load
- Try changing the host’s hardware encoding setting in Steam’s Remote Play options. The effect can vary by graphics hardware, so compare performance after each change rather than assuming one setting is best for every GPU.
- Close heavy background tasks and utilities that may interfere with streaming, then repeat the same in-game test.
- Check whether the game itself is maintaining a steady frame rate on the PC. If it is already struggling there, the Android stream cannot make its gameplay render faster.
Use the symptoms to choose the next test

Check network configuration only for connection problems
If Steam Link cannot connect—not merely if a connected stream stutters—check that the PC and Android device can reach each other on the local network. Valve notes that access point or client isolation can block this. Its connection guidance lists UDP ports 27031 and 27036 and TCP ports 27036 and 27037. Do not add port forwarding as a general remedy for local streaming stutter; use Valve’s connection troubleshooting steps when connection reachability is the issue.

When a router upgrade is worth considering
Consider a router with 5 GHz and 802.11ac support only if your checks point to the wireless network as the bottleneck and placement, interference, and stream settings have not solved it. A new router is not a guaranteed fix: improvement depends on the Android device, the host connection, and the wireless conditions in your home.
