Start by checking whether the problem affects one source or every source, then compare another file or device before changing Kodi’s cache. Buffering, uneven motion, playback errors, and audio/video sync problems have different likely causes; a larger cache cannot speed up a slow server or repair general internet access.
Identify what is going wrong
Note the exact symptom, the source type, your device and operating system, Kodi version, and whether the issue happens consistently. Kodi can play local files, network shares, and internet streams, so the path data takes to reach your device matters.

- Buffering: playback pauses while more data loads. A cache-full warning describes a source that is not delivering data quickly enough to sustain playback.
- Stuttering: playback continues, but motion is uneven. This is not automatically a cache problem; the device’s ability to handle the file may be relevant.
- Playback error: Kodi stops or reports an error. Record the wording rather than treating it as a buffering issue.
- Audio/video sync trouble: sound and picture do not match. Track it separately from pauses or dropped frames.
Isolate the source before changing settings
Try a known-good file or stream, then test the affected source on another device if possible. Kodi’s troubleshooting guidance recommends isolating the problem, testing with add-ons or user data temporarily removed when appropriate, and checking whether the issue follows the source or the device. - If several internet sources fail but local files play, look at the internet path, router, Wi-Fi, or remote servers.
- If the same file stutters on one device but works on another, suspect a device or playback-capability difference rather than assuming the cache is too small.
- If the problem appears across sources and devices, check software versions and gather logs.
Check Kodi, add-ons, and source availability
Use Kodi’s official download page to check the current stable release for your platform, and update an add-on only through its legitimate source. Release availability changes over time. At the time of the cited Android page, Kodi listed v21.3 (Omega); that page also cautions that Android playback depends on the varied capabilities of individual devices. If one add-on is implicated, check whether its source is available and whether the add-on itself is current before resetting Kodi settings. For a controlled test, temporarily disable or remove the suspected add-on; avoid deleting user data unless you understand what settings and configuration it contains.
Check the network path
Kodi does not control operating-system internet access. Check the device’s network configuration and, where relevant, firewall, antivirus, modem, and router settings. If the problem occurs only on Wi-Fi, test near the router or temporarily use a wired connection to see whether the symptom changes. A standard Ethernet cable is a diagnostic option, not a guaranteed cure: it cannot fix a slow remote server or an underpowered playback device.

Cache tuning may help when a connection is borderline or fluctuates, such as during occasional Wi-Fi interference. It cannot increase a source server’s delivery speed. Kodi’s cache guidance puts it plainly: “No amount of video cache tweaking will make a slow server connection any faster, which is a common issue for people who stream over the internet.” Kodi cache guidance

Where to find the v21 controls
In Kodi v21 Omega, open Settings > Services > Caching. Review the buffer mode, memory size, read factor, and chunk size in light of where the content comes from. Kodi v21 Caching settings
- Buffer mode: choose the option matching the source, such as internet streams, internet filesystems, network filesystems including SMB/NFS, or all filesystems.
- Memory size: determines how much memory Kodi uses for buffering; a value of zero writes the cache to disk.
- Read factor: affects how quickly Kodi reads relative to the stream’s average bitrate.
- Chunk size: may affect throughput in some high-bitrate cases.
Change settings cautiously and test the same source again so you can tell whether a change mattered. These controls tune buffering behavior; they are not bandwidth multipliers. Kodi’s v21 documentation says the older advancedsettings.xml method is deprecated for these cache settings and that leftover tags are ignored. Do not copy legacy XML recipes into v21 without checking version-specific documentation.

Do not use zero-cache as a universal fix
Setting memory size to zero means the cache is written to disk; it does not improve buffering or performance by itself. Nor does routinely clearing a cache address a source that cannot deliver data quickly enough.
When the issue persists
For a problem that continues across known-good sources or devices, enable Kodi debug logging and capture a short, repeatable example. Kodi describes the debug log as a basic fault-finding tool and recommends updating software before reporting a bug. Kodi log file guidance

Include the device and operating system, Kodi version, source type, exact error text, steps that reproduce the problem, and whether another player or device succeeds. This evidence helps distinguish a source failure from a Kodi, add-on, network, or device issue.
Choose hardware based on the actual limitation
Do not assume every Android box, phone, or TV can handle every file equally well. Kodi’s Android guidance emphasizes that devices vary in capability, and its software information states: “Kodi Foundation does not sell hardware, either on eBay or anywhere else.” Kodi Foundation software information Check the device-specific evidence before buying hardware; a purchase will not fix a slow stream server or a faulty network path.
