How to Fix Jetpack Cannot Connect: Site Inaccessible Error

A practical guide to fixing Jetpack’s “site inaccessible” error by testing XML-RPC, interpreting HTTP codes, removing WAF blocks, verifying outbound access, and reconnecting safely.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Jetpack cannot connect when WordPress.com cannot complete a request to your site. The fastest reliable fix is to verify that the site is publicly reachable, test xmlrpc.php, run the official Jetpack Debug Tool, and then remove whichever firewall, DNS, SSL, PHP, plugin, REST API, or server-resource problem the checks expose. Reconnecting Jetpack before fixing that underlying failure usually changes nothing.

What the “site inaccessible” message means

Jetpack is not simply checking whether your homepage appears in your own browser. Its service must reach your WordPress installation from outside your hosting account, authenticate through the connection endpoints, and exchange data over the public internet. A site can look normal to you while Jetpack fails because a firewall blocks WordPress.com, the server cannot make outbound requests, the XML-RPC endpoint returns the wrong content, or a proxy is presenting an invalid certificate.

The connection depends on two WordPress interfaces:

  • XML-RPC: Jetpack uses xmlrpc.php for connection and remote communication.
  • REST API: Jetpack also uses the WordPress JSON API. A security policy that disables the REST API or rejects the namespaces Jetpack needs can stop authentication even when XML-RPC works.

The practical implication is important: a successful browser visit to the homepage does not prove that Jetpack can connect. You need to test the endpoint and the server’s inbound and outbound network paths separately.

Do these checks first

Confirm that the site is public

Open an incognito or private browser window and visit the site’s canonical HTTPS address. Check the version of the domain that WordPress itself is configured to use, including a www prefix or a subdirectory if applicable. The site must not require a login, HTTP Basic Authentication, an IP allowlist, or a VPN for the Jetpack service to reach it.

  • Disable or bypass maintenance mode long enough to test.
  • Make sure a staging or development copy is not being used in the Jetpack connection screen.
  • Check both the homepage and a normal WordPress URL, such as a post, to rule out a partial outage.
  • If DNS was changed recently, allow time for all resolvers to receive the new address and verify that the domain points to the current server.

Check for a wider Jetpack outage

Review the official Automattic service-status page before changing your site. A service incident can produce a connection error that no local setting will fix. If the status page shows normal operation, continue with site-side diagnostics.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run the official diagnostic

Open the Jetpack Debug Tool, enter the site address, and run its checks. Inside WordPress, open Tools → Site Health and review the connection and network details. Record the exact error text and any HTTP status code; “inaccessible” is a symptom, while the code often identifies the failing layer.

Test the XML-RPC endpoint directly

In a browser, open:

https://YOUR-DOMAIN/xmlrpc.php

Replace the domain with the exact public address of the WordPress site. A healthy endpoint returns this one-line response, with no blank line or additional characters:

XML-RPC server accepts POST requests only.

This message is expected when you make a normal browser GET request. It confirms that the file is present, PHP is processing it, and the request reached WordPress. It does not mean every Jetpack operation has succeeded, but it is the basic endpoint test documented by Jetpack support.

Interpret unexpected XML-RPC output

  • 404 or “Not Found”: the URL may be wrong, the site may be installed in a subdirectory, the file may have been removed, or a web-server rule may be hiding it.
  • 403 Forbidden: a firewall, security plugin, host rule, bot-protection policy, or file permission rule is refusing the request.
  • Timeout or gateway error: the server, proxy, or security layer is too slow or unavailable.
  • Blank output: PHP may be failing silently, a plugin may be terminating the request, or output buffering and server configuration may be interfering.
  • Extra text before or after the expected sentence: inspect wp-config.php, active plugins, and the theme for accidental output, warnings, whitespace, or custom XML-RPC handling.

Do not paste a domain with an extra path, a trailing file name, or an old hostname into the test. A correctly functioning XML-RPC file at the wrong address still appears broken to Jetpack.

Use the HTTP status code to narrow the cause

The status code reported by the debugger, Site Health, a browser, or the host’s access log is a useful decision point. The same code can have more than one cause, so confirm it against the XML-RPC response and recent hosting changes.

Code What it usually indicates Where to investigate
401 Credentials, connection token, session, or an authentication allowlist problem Clear stale sessions and caches, then reauthenticate after endpoint access is confirmed
403 Permissions or a security control is refusing the request Firewall, WAF, security plugin, CDN bot rules, host rules, and XML-RPC permissions
404 The endpoint is missing, blocked, or addressed incorrectly WordPress URL, subdirectory, rewrite rules, deployment files, and server configuration
408 The request took too long or was interrupted Server response time, DDoS protection, PHP concurrency, and proxy timeouts
429 Too many requests or an imposed rate limit Host limits, firewall and CDN rate rules, and repeated connection attempts
500 A server, PHP, plugin, theme, or resource failure PHP and web-server logs, recently changed code, memory, and process limits
502 A gateway received an invalid response from an upstream service Reverse proxy, PHP-FPM, load balancer, and upstream server health
503 The service is unavailable, overloaded, or in maintenance Host status, resource limits, maintenance settings, and application logs
504 A gateway timed out waiting for the upstream server Slow PHP work, overloaded hosting, proxy timeout settings, and database load

An HTTP code is more actionable than the generic phrase “site inaccessible.” For example, a 403 with a normal homepage strongly suggests filtering, while a 500 on both the homepage and xmlrpc.php points toward a server or PHP failure.

Remove firewall, WAF, CDN, and security-plugin blocks

Jetpack support describes a common warning in these terms: “WordPress.com requests to your site are being blocked, usually by a firewall or security rule.” The block can happen before the request reaches WordPress, so Jetpack cannot repair it by reconnecting.

Review every filtering layer

  • Inspect host-level firewalls and intrusion-prevention rules for denied requests to /xmlrpc.php.
  • Check a web application firewall for bot challenges, country restrictions, IP reputation blocks, and rules that reject XML-RPC.
  • Review CDN or reverse-proxy caching and security settings. A cached error response can make a fixed endpoint appear broken until the relevant cache is purged.
  • Inspect security plugins for options labelled “disable XML-RPC,” “block remote access,” “disable WordPress API,” or similar.
  • Look at rate-limit settings. Repeated failed connection attempts can trigger a temporary 429 or an automated ban.

Allow the right traffic without disabling all security

Ask the host or security-provider support team to allow legitimate Jetpack and WordPress.com requests to xmlrpc.php and to permit the REST API namespaces required by Jetpack. An exception should be as narrow as the product allows: preserve TLS, authentication, logging, and rate controls instead of turning off the entire firewall.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Provide the support team with the site URL, the exact timestamp of a failed test, the HTTP code, and the request path. Their logs can show the rule ID or source address that your WordPress dashboard cannot see. After a block is removed, Jetpack says its check normally clears within about a day; a reconnection attempt is not a substitute for removing the rule.

Verify outbound connectivity from the server

Not every failure is an inbound block. Jetpack can reach your site while the web server is unable to contact WordPress.com. Site Health may identify this with errors such as failed_test__outbound_http or failed_test__outbound_https.

Ask the host to confirm that the server can make outbound HTTP and HTTPS requests to WordPress.com. The host should check:

  • egress firewall rules and network ACLs;
  • DNS resolution from the server itself;
  • proxy requirements and environment variables;
  • TLS inspection or certificate interception;
  • PHP’s HTTP transport and cURL/OpenSSL support; and
  • resource or process limits that terminate outbound requests.

Run the Jetpack Debug Tool again after the host confirms egress access. Also open the detailed “Could not reach WordPress.org” result in Site Health if it appears; it can reveal a broader outbound-network problem affecting updates and other integrations, not just Jetpack.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the REST API, plugins, theme, and PHP

Keep the REST API available

Jetpack uses both XML-RPC and the JSON REST API. If a security plugin or custom authentication code disables the API globally, Jetpack may still fail after XML-RPC starts returning the expected sentence. Re-enable the REST API and test again. If authentication is restricted by a namespace allowlist, apply the namespaces specified in Jetpack’s current support documentation rather than allowing every API route indiscriminately.

Temporarily isolate plugin and theme conflicts

Record the current configuration before making changes. Temporarily disable suspected security, maintenance-mode, minification, XML-RPC, and API-control plugins, then retest xmlrpc.php and the Debug Tool. If the endpoint becomes healthy, re-enable plugins one at a time until the blocker is identified.

If the problem persists, switch briefly to a default WordPress theme. A theme can send warnings, add output before the XML-RPC response, or hook into authentication and REST requests. Restore the original theme after testing and fix the specific code rather than leaving the site on a diagnostic theme.

Confirm PHP prerequisites

Review the PHP version and extensions reported in Site Health and the host control panel. Jetpack’s troubleshooting guidance specifically calls for the PHP XML extension. A missing extension, a fatal error, or an incompatible PHP change can produce a blank response or a 500 error. Check the PHP error log for the exact file and line before changing versions or disabling code.

Validate DNS, HTTPS, and certificate handling

Jetpack must resolve the same public hostname that WordPress advertises. Compare the site’s WordPress Address and Site Address with the hostname used in the Jetpack connection and XML-RPC test. A recent migration can leave one record pointing to an old server, an IPv6 record pointing somewhere different, or a redirect loop between HTTP and HTTPS.

  • Confirm that the A and, where used, AAAA records point to the active server.
  • Check that the certificate covers the exact hostname, including www when present.
  • Make sure the certificate chain is complete and not expired or revoked.
  • Remove redirect loops and mixed HTTP/HTTPS settings in WordPress and the proxy.
  • Test from an external network, not only from a device that may have cached DNS.

An invalid or incomplete SSL certificate can prevent outbound HTTPS validation even when a browser appears to load the site after a local warning has been bypassed. Do not treat a browser exception as proof that Jetpack can establish a trusted connection.

Inspect server load, PHP concurrency, and logs

A healthy configuration can still fail when the server cannot finish the request. Review web-server access logs, PHP error logs, PHP-FPM or equivalent process logs, and firewall logs at the exact time of the failure.

Look for:

  • worker or PHP-FPM exhaustion;
  • memory-limit or out-of-memory messages;
  • database connection failures;
  • fatal plugin or theme errors;
  • upstream connection resets;
  • request timeouts; and
  • automated bans or rate-limit entries.

A 408, 502, 503, or 504 often requires the host to inspect concurrency and proxy settings. Ask whether the account has reached a CPU, memory, process, or simultaneous-connection limit. Increasing a timeout without fixing an overloaded PHP pool only makes failed requests wait longer.

Clear stale caches and reconnect Jetpack

Cache and token errors should be handled after endpoint, network, and security checks pass. Purge the page cache, object cache, and CDN cache that could contain an old 403, 404, challenge page, or connection response. Clear any server-side cache that stores authentication or API results.

Then reconnect using this path:

  1. In the WordPress dashboard, open Jetpack → My Jetpack.
  2. Choose the site and account connection controls.
  3. Disconnect the existing Jetpack connection only after the site passes the XML-RPC and network tests.
  4. Reconnect and select Supercharge my site when the setup screen offers it.
  5. Run the Jetpack Debug Tool again and review Tools → Site Health for remaining errors.

Reconnecting alone does not remove a host-level firewall block, repair a missing endpoint, restore outbound HTTPS, or fix a PHP fatal error. If the same status code returns immediately, undo the reconnection attempt and continue investigating the underlying layer instead of repeatedly generating new tokens.

Follow the right branch for common symptoms

The homepage works, but XML-RPC returns 403

Prioritize WAF, security-plugin, CDN, and host rules. Ask for the blocking rule ID and request a narrowly scoped exception for Jetpack and WordPress.com access to /xmlrpc.php. Check rate limits before changing WordPress code.

XML-RPC returns 404 after a migration

Verify the WordPress subdirectory and the exact Site Address, confirm that xmlrpc.php exists in the WordPress installation, and inspect rewrite or web-server rules. A DNS record still pointing at the old host can produce the same symptom.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The endpoint is blank or contains PHP warnings

Inspect the PHP log, disable the suspected plugin, and switch to a default theme for a controlled test. Remove accidental output from configuration files and correct the fatal error before reconnecting.

Site Health reports failed outbound HTTP or HTTPS

Escalate to the host’s network team. Request a server-side test of DNS resolution and outbound connections to WordPress.com, including certificate validation. Local browser tests cannot prove that the server has egress access.

The code changes from 429 to 503

First remove the rate limit or wait for its documented reset, then investigate capacity. A server that is overloaded can begin returning 503 after a burst of retries. Stop repeated reconnect attempts while the host reviews limits.

Everything works until a security plugin is re-enabled

Leave the plugin active only with the specific XML-RPC and REST API exceptions required by Jetpack. If it cannot provide a safe exception, ask its vendor or host for a compatible rule rather than disabling protection globally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to send your host or firewall provider

A precise escalation avoids several rounds of generic advice. Include:

  • the canonical HTTPS site address and any subdirectory;
  • the exact XML-RPC URL tested;
  • the complete response or HTTP code;
  • the timestamp and timezone of each failed attempt;
  • the Jetpack Debug Tool result and Site Health error name;
  • whether the failure affects inbound access, outbound access, or both;
  • recent DNS, SSL, host, CDN, PHP, plugin, or theme changes; and
  • the request path and any firewall rule ID shown in logs.

Ask the provider to verify inbound Jetpack/WordPress.com requests to xmlrpc.php, outbound HTTP and HTTPS from the server, REST API access, certificate validation, and resource limits. This list distinguishes a network policy problem from an application error and gives the provider concrete checks to perform.

Prevent the error from returning

  • Document any firewall or CDN exception for XML-RPC and the REST API, including its scope and reason.
  • Monitor certificate expiration and DNS changes during migrations.
  • Retest the public XML-RPC endpoint after changing hosts, PHP versions, security plugins, or proxy settings.
  • Keep WordPress, Jetpack, plugins, themes, and PHP supported and updated, while reviewing compatibility before production changes.
  • Watch logs for recurring 403, 429, 500, 502, 503, and 504 responses instead of waiting for a user report.
  • Keep maintenance and staging protections off the production URL used by Jetpack.

The decisive test is not whether reconnecting appears to complete. It is whether the public site, the exact XML-RPC response, the REST API, inbound filtering, outbound server access, and HTTPS validation all succeed together. Once those layers are healthy, Jetpack can establish its connection normally.
