First work out what is jerking: the pointer, the screen following it, or the zoom. A pointer that skips while the frame stays still can indicate missed cursor movement during capture. If the pointer is smooth but the view lurches around it, adjust the recorder or editor’s follow and screen-animation controls instead. The right fix depends on the software and whether you can still edit the footage.
Identify which movement is jerky
Play the recording and watch the pointer in relation to the application window and other fixed elements on screen. This separates a capture problem from an animation problem.

- The pointer jumps, stutters, or vanishes while the frame stays still: check capture performance and cursor-recording settings. CamStudio’s help explains that sampling the screen too slowly can miss fast cursor movements, causing the cursor to jump, look jerky, or disappear: CamStudio help.
- The pointer is smooth but the image shifts around it: inspect the auto-follow or pan speed and the screen-animation style.
- The pointer looks fine until the view zooms: adjust zoom animation separately from cursor animation.
If the pointer itself skips during capture
When the frame is steady but the cursor skips, focus on how the recorder captures the screen and pointer, rather than trying to smooth the screen-follow effect. CamStudio specifically warns that slow screen sampling can miss fast cursor movement. Its explanation applies to CamStudio; it does not establish that every recorder uses the same capture controls or behaves the same way.
Check the recorder’s capture-performance and cursor options, then make a short test recording. Change one class of settings at a time so you can tell whether the pointer capture improves.

If auto-follow makes the screen lurch
When the pointer moves smoothly but the recording pans abruptly, adjust the control that determines how the capture area follows the pointer. In CamStudio, the help describes an autopan speed setting measured in screen pixels; it does not give a universal recommended value. See CamStudio’s autopan and sampling guidance.
In Screen Studio, cursor animation and screen animation are distinct settings. Its animation guide lists cursor styles—Smooth, Medium, Rapid, and None—and describes Focused screen animation as stabilizing quickly, while Smooth makes the screen movement more fluid. If the zoom or movement while zoomed is abrupt
Change the screen’s zoom and movement behavior independently of the pointer’s animation. Screen Studio’s advanced animation controls distinguish motion blur for cursor movement, screen zooming, and screen movement while zoomed. That separation lets you adjust the part that looks abrupt without assuming that pointer smoothing will fix the view. The guide is at Screen Studio advanced animations.
If the footage has already been recorded
Look for post-production cursor cleanup in the editor. Screen Studio documents a “Remove cursor shakes” option in its cursor controls: Screen Studio cursor guide. These editing features address cursor appearance; they do not establish that every missed movement or capture-side problem can be repaired after recording. - Keep a copy of the original clip or project before changing post-production settings.
- Change only one category at a time: pointer capture, follow/pan speed, cursor animation, or screen/zoom animation.
- Record a short sample or preview the same section after each change.
- Review it at the size viewers will actually use. A movement that seems acceptable in a large preview may look different at the final viewing size.
There is no source-backed universal frame rate, follow speed, or smoothing value for this problem. Exact menu paths also depend on the recorder, editor, operating system, and version. If you need precise steps, identify those details and whether the original pointer or the following view is the part that jerks.
