Start by checking Jellyfin’s playback status and the logs for the failed session—not by changing settings or buying hardware. The playback mode shows whether the problem is likely to involve client compatibility, video conversion, or performance; the FFmpeg log identifies why a transcode failed. Jellyfin’s troubleshooting guidance says: “If media is unable to transcode, first check the ffmpeg logs.”
1. Narrow down what is failing
Reproduce the problem once and record what happens. Note the Jellyfin client and device, whether the same title works on another client, and whether other media fails too. For the affected file, note its container, video and audio codecs, subtitle track, resolution, and whether it is HDR if that information is available.
- One file fails: Focus on that file’s codecs, subtitles, HDR format, and the FFmpeg log for its playback session.
- One client fails: Compare its codec, subtitle, and HDR support with a client where the title works.
- Several clients or titles fail: Check server logs and network reachability before assuming the media file is the cause.
- No server web-traffic entry appears for the attempt: The request may not be reaching that server. Verify the client’s server address and network path.
Codec support varies by app, browser, operating system, and version. Jellyfin’s compatibility information describes recent clients; legacy versions may behave differently.
2. Check the logs for the failed session
- Reproduce the error and note when it occurred.
- Check the client console, if available, and the Jellyfin server log for errors around that time.
- If the media could not transcode, find the FFmpeg log for that playback session and read the error near the failure.
- If ordinary logs do not explain the problem, temporarily enable debug logging through
logging.json. It is not configured in the frontend.
Debug mode can produce very large logs. Turn it off when troubleshooting is finished; compress extensive logs before sharing them.

3. Identify the playback mode
Check the playback type shown in the Jellyfin dashboard for the active session. It tells you what work the server is doing and helps direct the next check.
| Playback mode | What Jellyfin does | Where to look next |
|---|---|---|
| Direct Play | Sends the original file to the client with almost no extra server load. | If playback still fails, investigate client behavior, the file, or network delivery rather than assuming a video-transcoding bottleneck. |
| Remux | Changes the container without changing the audio or video streams. | Check container compatibility and the FFmpeg log if the remux fails. |
| Direct Stream | Transcodes audio while keeping the original video. | Check audio format support and the FFmpeg log; this mode is not full video transcoding. |
| Video Transcode | Converts the video stream. | Inspect the FFmpeg log for the failing stage, such as decoding, subtitle processing, tone-mapping, or encoding. |
For local-source playback, a client sends the server a profile describing supported codecs, resolutions, bitrate, and other constraints. The server chooses output settings within those capabilities, so a transcode decision may reflect the client profile and source/target limits rather than a single server-side resolution setting.

4. Check whether the client can play the file as-is
Direct Play requires the client to support the combination of container, video, audio, and subtitles—not just the video codec by itself. An unsupported container, audio format, or subtitle combination may lead to a remux or Direct Stream. Unsupported video requires video transcoding.
- Compare the affected client with one that plays the same title successfully. Differences in app, browser, operating system, or version can affect compatibility.
- Check which audio and subtitle tracks are selected. A track the client cannot handle may trigger conversion even when the video is compatible.
- Check whether subtitles are being burned into the picture. Subtitle burn-in can add an intensive CPU step to a transcode.
- For HDR content, consider the whole playback chain: source format, client app or browser, operating system, device, and display. A device without compatible HDR playback may require conversion to SDR.
HDR support is not universal across browsers, native apps, devices, or formats. Use Jellyfin’s current client compatibility information for the specific app and device rather than treating one codec or browser as universally supported.

5. Diagnose buffering or a failed video transcode
If the session is transcoding video, use the FFmpeg log to identify which stage is slow or failing. A high CPU load does not by itself prove that hardware acceleration was ignored: Jellyfin’s transcoding pipeline can use a mix of hardware and software, and some stages may remain on the CPU.
- Decoding or encoding errors: Check the FFmpeg error and whether the selected acceleration method supports that codec on this hardware and operating system.
- Subtitle processing: Test a different subtitle track or playback without subtitles to see whether burn-in is involved.
- HDR source on an SDR target: Tone-mapping is needed during transcoding. Jellyfin warns that software HDR-to-SDR tone-mapping can be very slow; check whether the relevant tone-mapping stage is accelerated.
- Playback buffers without an obvious FFmpeg failure: Check whether server capacity or storage I/O is limiting throughput, and compare behavior with a title that Direct Plays.
Hardware acceleration is not a single universal switch. Jellyfin documents Intel QSV, NVIDIA NVDEC/NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel/AMD VA-API on Linux, Apple VideoToolbox on macOS, and Rockchip RKMPP on Linux. The right method depends on GPU vendor and generation, operating system, install type, driver, codec, and the stages the stream requires. Jellyfin recommends its jellyfin-ffmpeg build; using an unrelated FFmpeg binary can result in only partial acceleration.

6. Check for a matching driver or platform issue
Hardware-acceleration failures can depend on a specific operating system, GPU generation, and driver version. Match the error and platform against Jellyfin’s current known-issues information before changing drivers.
- AMD Radeon on Windows: Jellyfin documents a case affecting RX 5000 and newer RDNA cards with Adrenalin 24.1.1 through 24.4.1, where FFmpeg may report error
-60. The documentation says Adrenalin 24.5.1 or newer fixes that cited issue. This is a version-specific example, not a diagnosis for every AMD playback failure. - AMD VA-API on some Linux distributions: Jellyfin notes that some distributions have disabled H.264/HEVC codecs in the Mesa VA-API driver, preventing AMD VA-API transcoding. Fedora, OpenSUSE, and Manjaro are listed as examples. The official Docker image or a third-party Mesa package are described as possible routes; verify the actual distribution and driver stack first.
7. Decide whether storage or hardware needs to change
Consider an upgrade only after the logs, playback mode, compatibility, acceleration configuration, and platform-specific issues point to a real bottleneck.

- PCIe Expansion for Future Networking, Storage & AI Upgrades - Built with expandable PCIe architecture for advanced customization and future upgrades. Add faster networking, NVMe storage expansion, AI accelerators, or additional hardware as your workflow evolves
- Storage: Jellyfin says hard-drive I/O can limit throughput in some modern GPU-transcoding setups and suggests SSD or RAM-disk caching for temporary transcode segments in that situation. An SSD for a Jellyfin transcoding cache is relevant only when I/O is implicated; it will not fix an FFmpeg error, incompatible client codec, broken driver, or unconfigured acceleration.
- GPU or server: Compare the workload’s codecs and stages—decoding, deinterlacing, scaling, tone-mapping, subtitle burn-in, and encoding—with the acceleration supported by the GPU, operating system, and install method. CPU-only video transcoding can be demanding, and some low-end GPUs do not have hardware encoders. No one GPU or server is suitable for every workload.
