How to Fix Jellyfin Buffering and Playback Errors

Use Jellyfin playback information and the matching logs to identify whether buffering comes from client compatibility, transcoding, acceleration, a driver issue, or remote access.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start by checking Jellyfin’s playback information and the logs for the failed attempt. This shows whether the client is direct-playing the file or the server is transcoding it—and whether the failure points to the client, FFmpeg, hardware acceleration, a driver, or the network. Follow the branch that matches the evidence before changing settings or buying hardware.

1. Check whether Jellyfin is direct-playing or transcoding

Open the playback information for the item that is buffering or failing. Note whether it is playing directly or being converted, and keep the same client and media item during comparisons. Jellyfin converts media when a client cannot process its format; unsupported video codecs can require video transcoding. See the Jellyfin codec support guidance.

This distinction matters because direct playback and transcoding place different demands on the system. If playback information shows a transcode, identify the reason it is needed before investigating server capacity.

2. Read the log for the failure you actually have

Jellyfin recommends starting playback troubleshooting with the client console or the server log. If the item fails while transcoding, inspect the matching FFmpeg log. Capture the error from the failed attempt and confirm that the log belongs to that playback session before changing settings. The Jellyfin troubleshooting guide describes these starting points.

  • Entry-level NAS Personal Storage:UGREEN NAS DH2300 is your first and best NAS made easy. It is designed for beginners who want a simple, private way to store videos, photos and personal files, which is intuitive for users moving from cloud storage or external drives and move away from scattered date across devices. This entry-level NAS 2-bay perfect for personal entertainment, photo storage, and easy data backup (doesn't support Docker or virtual machines).
  • Set Your Devices Free, Expand Your Digital World: This unified storage hub supports massive capacity up to 64TB.*Storage drives not included. Stop Deleting, Start Storing. UGREEN NAS is a better way to free up storage across all your devices such as phones, computers, tablets and also does automatic backups across devices regardless of the operating system—Window, iOS, Android or macOS.
  • The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. You will save $6,738.82 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH2300 + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).
  • Blazing Speed, Minimal Power: Equipped with a high-performance processor, 1GbE port, and 4GB RAM on Board, this NAS handles multiple tasks with ease. File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
  • Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
  • Playback issue: check the client console or server log.
  • Transcode failure: check the FFmpeg log for that attempt.

3. If a transcode is involved, test the requested quality

Transcoding output and workload depend on factors including source resolution and frame rate, target bitrate, codecs, and client constraints. Jellyfin’s transcoding documentation explains these factors.

As a diagnostic test, lower the requested resolution or bitrate on the client and retry the same item. If playback changes, that is evidence that the requested stream settings affect the problem; it does not, by itself, establish whether the root cause is server capacity, a particular transcode stage, or another limitation.

4. Confirm hardware acceleration is configured and working

Jellyfin supports several acceleration paths, depending on the platform and hardware: Intel Quick Sync, NVIDIA NVDEC/NVENC, AMD AMF, VA-API on Linux, VideoToolbox on macOS, and RKMPP on Linux. Consult the hardware-acceleration documentation for the relevant platform and setup.

A transcode can involve decoding, optional deinterlacing, scaling or format conversion, HDR or Dolby Vision tone-mapping, subtitle burn-in, and encoding. Not every stage is accelerated on every device and software or driver combination. Acceleration may therefore be partial, leaving CPU work that affects speed. Jellyfin recommends its modified jellyfin-ffmpeg build; do not assume acceleration is active merely because compatible hardware is present.

5. Check known issues for your exact GPU, operating system, and driver

Compare your hardware generation, OS, and driver version with Jellyfin’s known-issues documentation. For example, the page documents a Windows issue affecting AMD Radeon RX 5000 and newer RDNA integrated and discrete GPUs with Adrenalin 24.1.1 through 24.4.1: playback could fail with FFmpeg error -60. It lists Adrenalin 24.5.1 and newer as fixing that issue. This specific case does not mean every -60 error has the same cause.

6. Separate remote access from a stream that buffers

If Jellyfin works on your local network but you cannot reach the server from outside it, check router port forwarding, as described in Jellyfin’s networking guidance. That is a different problem from a stream that connects and then buffers: use playback information and logs for the latter rather than treating every remote playback problem as a port-forwarding failure.

When storage or new hardware is relevant

Do not treat an SSD, GPU, or router as a general-purpose buffering fix. Jellyfin’s transcoding guidance identifies an SSD or RAM disk as an option for caching temporary transcoded video segments. That use is relevant when your workflow uses this cache; it does not establish that an SSD will resolve other playback failures.

Consider acceleration hardware only after logs and playback information point to a transcoding bottleneck. Compare support for the codecs and pipeline stages you need, OS and driver compatibility, whether your Jellyfin deployment can access the GPU, and the workload shown by the failing transcode. A supported GPU can help with compatible work, but an arbitrary GPU will not necessarily fix buffering or playback errors.
