When Jackbox will not connect, first check which connection has failed: the host game’s connection to Jackbox’s servers, or a player’s browser connection to the host’s game. Those problems have different fixes. For a room-code error, verify the four-letter code on the host screen and enter it at Jackbox.tv. For a disconnect or lag, work through the steps below in order, starting with the device that is actually having trouble.
First, identify where the connection is failing
Jackbox uses two separate connections during play. The host runs the game on a computer, console, or set-top box, and that game connects to Jackbox’s servers. Each player uses a browser on a separate device as a controller and joins the host’s game. A problem in either connection can look like “Jackbox is not working,” but the troubleshooting is different.

- The host game cannot connect, loses its connection, or returns the group to the lobby with a server-reachability error: troubleshoot the game-running device and its network first.
- The host game is running, but one player cannot join or submit answers: troubleshoot that player’s browser, device, and room-code entry.
- Several players have trouble at the same time: check whether the host game has lost its server connection before changing settings on every controller.
Jackbox’s support article on controller connections, updated October 28, 2025, covers player-browser problems. Its server-connection guidance, dated January 3, 2024, covers trouble connecting the host game to Jackbox. Treat those as separate paths rather than assuming that every disconnect is a room-code or browser issue.

The room code is the four-letter code displayed on the host’s game screen. A player enters that code at Jackbox.tv, provides a player name, and presses Play. The host needs a second device to act as a controller; the device running the game is not used to enter answers. Jackbox says one user may log in per browser per device.

- Keep the host game open and look at the code currently displayed on its screen.
- On a separate phone, tablet, or computer, open Jackbox.tv in a browser.
- Enter the four letters shown on the host screen, then enter a player name and press Play.
- If the game displays a different code after a restart or a return to the lobby, use the code currently shown rather than an earlier one.
If the code is rejected, check for a mistyped letter and confirm that the host is still in the room waiting for players. Refresh Jackbox.tv and enter the displayed code again. If the game has already started, returned to the lobby, or the host has restarted it, check the host screen for the current room rather than relying on a code seen earlier.
If the code is accepted but the controller does not finish joining, treat that as a browser-connection problem. Confirm that cookies and JavaScript are enabled, then refresh the page. If a single device still fails while the host game remains available, move to the browser troubleshooting section rather than changing the host’s firewall settings.
Fix a controller that cannot join or keeps disconnecting
Use these steps on the device whose browser is open to Jackbox.tv. Jackbox’s controller troubleshooting recommends refreshing the page, checking browser capabilities, trying another supported browser, and checking for network interference. Start with changes that are easy to reverse; clear browser data only after simpler checks.
- Refresh Jackbox.tv. If the page has stalled or failed to connect, reload it and re-enter the current four-letter code shown on the host screen.
- Check browser requirements. Cookies and JavaScript must be enabled. Jackbox also lists WebSockets and HTML5 as required browser capabilities.
- Try another supported browser. If the same device can join through another browser, the issue is likely specific to the original browser’s settings, extensions, or compatibility.
- Temporarily disable ad blocking or other extensions. An extension can interfere with the controller page. Test Jackbox.tv again, then re-enable extensions one at a time if you need to identify the one affecting it.
- Check the VPN. Jackbox suggests disabling a VPN as a connection test. If the controller joins without it, the VPN path may be affecting the connection; do not assume the game or room code itself is faulty.
- Reboot the router if multiple devices have trouble. This is a reasonable network check when more than one player is affected, though it will briefly interrupt other internet use in the home.
- Clear browser cache and cookies only if earlier steps fail. Jackbox publishes separate mobile instructions for clearing browser data. Do not clear it during an active game: Jackbox warns that doing so can prevent the player from rejoining that session.
For a remote game, players also need a way to see the host’s screen so they can read the room code and follow the game. Jackbox’s setup guidance describes screen sharing as one way to provide that view. Screen visibility is separate from the controller connection: a player may have a working Jackbox.tv page but still need access to the host’s shared game screen.
Check whether the browser is supported
Jackbox’s supported-browser article, updated October 20, 2025, lists these minimum versions for jackbox.tv. Browser support changes over time, so if a device is near a listed minimum, check Jackbox’s current supported-browser guidance rather than treating these numbers as a guarantee of support indefinitely.

| Device type | Browser | Minimum version listed by Jackbox |
|---|---|---|
| Desktop | Microsoft Edge | 79+ |
| Desktop | Mozilla Firefox | 75+ |
| Desktop | Google Chrome | 79+ |
| Desktop | Apple Safari | 13.1+ |
| Desktop | Opera | 66+ |
| Mobile | iOS Safari | 13.4+ |
| Mobile | Android Browser | 101+ |
| Mobile | Android Chrome | 101+ |
These are the versions Jackbox listed in that article, not a claim that every older or newer browser version behaves identically on every device. The browser also needs cookies, WebSockets, HTML5, and JavaScript. If a controller fails on one browser, testing another browser that meets the listed requirements is a more useful diagnostic than repeatedly changing the room code.
Fix a host game that cannot reach Jackbox servers
When the game-running device cannot connect to Jackbox’s servers, player browsers may not be able to join even if they are working correctly. Jackbox’s server-connection guidance recommends restarting the game and host device, rebooting the router, and checking network restrictions. Follow this sequence on the device running the game.
Recommended Free Tools
- Close and reopen the game. Re-enter the game and check whether it connects to the server.
- Restart the host device. Fully restart the computer, console, or set-top box that is running the game, then try again.
- Reboot the router. Restarting network equipment can clear a temporary connection problem. Wait for the home network to come back before reopening the game.
- Check VPN and network restrictions. Jackbox suggests disabling a VPN as a test. On a computer, check whether firewall or antivirus software is blocking the game’s connection. Make changes only to the relevant game or network rule; do not leave security protections broadly disabled.
- Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet, if possible. Jackbox recommends testing both connection types. Use Ethernet only if the host device has a network port or can use a suitable adapter. This test can help isolate a wireless-network problem, but it is not a fix for a blocked server connection or a controller-browser issue.
If the game repeatedly returns to the lobby with an error saying it cannot reach game servers, Jackbox classifies that symptom as a connectivity problem rather than a game crash. For a PC that continues to crash instead, Jackbox’s separate crash guidance suggests checking overclocking and graphics drivers. A crash and a server error need different remedies; do not treat a crash as proof that the router or room code is at fault.
Check ports only for the game generation Jackbox identifies
Changing router or firewall rules is not a first troubleshooting step. Jackbox’s server-connection article lists port guidance by game generation, so identify the specific game or Party Pack before making a network change. The guidance below is what that article states; it does not establish requirements for every later Jackbox title.
| Game generation identified in Jackbox guidance | Ports listed | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Games before Party Pack 7 | 80, 443, 843, 38202, 38203 | Jackbox lists these ports for games before Party Pack 7. |
| Party Pack 7, 8, 9, and 10 | 80 and 443 | Jackbox says these packs do not use the high-numbered ports and use 80 and 443 if affected. |
| Titles later than those listed | Not established in the cited article | Do not assume the earlier port list applies; check the support guidance for the specific title. |
Ports matter when a firewall or network restriction is preventing the host game from reaching its servers. They are not a remedy for a mistyped room code, blocked cookies, a problematic browser extension, or a player’s controller device. If you are on a managed, school, workplace, or public network, you may not have permission to change its firewall or router configuration; ask the network administrator rather than attempting broad changes.

When the symptom is lag rather than a failed connection
“Lag” can describe delayed controller responses, a browser that stops updating, or a host game that drops its server connection. Jackbox Games Support’s published troubleshooting offers steps for connection failures, but it does not establish a single cause or a guaranteed fix for every kind of lag. Use the symptom to choose the relevant path instead of making unrelated changes.
- One controller is slow or unresponsive: refresh Jackbox.tv, check the browser requirements, try another supported browser, and test without interfering extensions or a VPN.
- Several controllers stall while the host game also reports a server problem: follow the host-network steps, including restarting the game and host device and checking the router and network restrictions.
- The host game returns to the lobby with a server-reachability error: treat it as a connection issue, not a crash.
- The PC game closes or crashes rather than reporting a server error: use the separate crash path; Jackbox suggests checking overclocking and graphics drivers.
Changing the host’s port settings will not address a lagging browser controller unless the host’s server connection is the actual failure. Likewise, repeatedly refreshing a controller will not fix a host game that cannot reach Jackbox’s servers. Keeping the two connection paths separate prevents needless changes and makes each test easier to interpret.
A safe order for troubleshooting during a game night
When players are waiting, use the least disruptive checks first. This order follows Jackbox’s recommendations while avoiding a step that may make a player unable to return to the current session.
- Read the host screen: confirm the current room code and note whether the host game itself is connected.
- For one player, refresh Jackbox.tv and re-enter the displayed code; verify cookies and JavaScript and try a supported browser if needed.
- For a host-side server error, close and reopen the game, then restart the host device if the error remains.
- Test the network: reboot the router, check whether a VPN or computer security software is interfering, and compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet when the host supports it.
- Save clearing cache and cookies for last. Do not do it during the active session if the player may need to rejoin.
- Only consider port rules after identifying the relevant game generation and confirming that network restrictions are a plausible cause.
If the problem persists after these checks, keep track of the exact game or Party Pack, the device running it, the controller device and browser, and whether one or all players are affected. Those details help distinguish a title-specific server issue, a host-network restriction, and a single-browser problem when consulting Jackbox Games Support.

Can I use the same device to host and play as a controller?
Jackbox’s joining instructions say the host needs a second device to act as a controller. Use a separate phone, tablet, or computer to open Jackbox.tv and enter answers; the device running the game displays the game and room code.
Why can one player not join when everyone else can?
If the host game is still running and other players are connected, begin with that player’s controller device: refresh Jackbox.tv, check cookies and JavaScript, try another supported browser, and test with ad-blocking extensions or a VPN disabled. A one-player browser problem does not by itself point to the host’s firewall.
Which browsers work with Jackbox.tv?
Jackbox’s browser article updated October 20, 2025, lists desktop minimums of Edge 79+, Firefox 75+, Chrome 79+, Safari 13.1+, and Opera 66+, plus mobile iOS Safari 13.4+, Android Browser 101+, and Android Chrome 101+. The browser must support cookies, WebSockets, HTML5, and JavaScript. Check Jackbox’s current supported-browser page if your version is close to a minimum.
Should I clear cookies while a Jackbox game is in progress?
No. Jackbox warns that clearing cache or cookies during a game can prevent a player from rejoining that session. Try refreshing, checking browser settings, and testing another supported browser first; reserve clearing browser data for later troubleshooting.

Do I need to buy an Ethernet cable to fix Jackbox lag?
No purchase is required. Jackbox suggests comparing Wi-Fi with Ethernet for a host game’s server-connection problem, but that test is optional and only makes sense if the host device has an Ethernet port or suitable adapter. A cable will not fix a room-code typo, browser issue, or every server or internet problem.

Which ports should I open for Jackbox?
Jackbox’s server-connection article lists ports 80, 443, 843, 38202, and 38203 for games before Party Pack 7. It says Party Packs 7, 8, 9, and 10 use 80 and 443 and do not use the high-numbered ports. The article does not establish port needs for every later title, so identify the game and check its specific support guidance before changing router or firewall rules.
Is a Jackbox return to the lobby always a crash?
No. Jackbox says returning to the lobby with an error about reaching game servers indicates a connectivity problem rather than a crash. If a PC game actually continues to crash, its separate crash guidance suggests checking overclocking and graphics drivers.
What do remote players need besides a room code?
They need a browser on a controller device to join at Jackbox.tv and a way to see the host’s game screen, so they can read the code and follow play. Jackbox’s setup guidance identifies screen sharing as one way to provide that view; screen visibility and the controller’s connection are separate needs.
The Bottom Line
Start by deciding whether the failure is on the host game’s server connection or one player’s browser controller. Use the current four-letter code at Jackbox.tv, check browser requirements for controller trouble, and restart the game, host device, or router for host-side connection errors. Reserve browser-data clearing and port changes for later, game-specific troubleshooting.
