If your iPhone Personal Hotspot will not connect, first check that your cellular plan supports it and that the hotspot is available and enabled. Restart the iPhone and the device joining it, then follow the steps for your connection method—Wi‑Fi, USB, Bluetooth, or Instant Hotspot. Save Reset Network Settings for last because it removes saved network configuration.
Check that Personal Hotspot is available
Personal Hotspot shares an iPhone’s cellular data connection; it does not relay a Wi‑Fi connection the iPhone is using. Availability depends on your carrier and service plan, and fees or device limits may vary by provider and model. - On the iPhone, open Settings > Personal Hotspot and check whether the feature is available and enabled.
- For a regular connection from a device outside your Apple Account or configured Family Sharing group, turn on Allow Others to Join.
- If Personal Hotspot is missing, dimmed, or cannot be enabled, check that mobile data is on and ask your carrier whether your plan includes Personal Hotspot. A setting change cannot add carrier or plan support.
Try the basic fixes before changing network settings
- Restart both the iPhone providing the hotspot and the device trying to connect.
- Check for the latest iOS or iPadOS on the iPhone or iPad. If you are troubleshooting a USB connection to a Mac, update macOS too.
- Go to the section below that matches how you are connecting. Each method has different requirements.

If another device cannot join over Wi‑Fi
- On the iPhone, open Settings > Personal Hotspot, switch on Allow Others to Join, and leave this screen open while the other device connects.
- Check the hotspot name and password shown on that screen. On the receiving device, turn Wi‑Fi off and on again, then select the network with the matching name.
- If the receiving device reports a password error, check the password on the iPhone and enter it again.
If the network does not appear or the device still will not join, eligible models can try Maximize Compatibility in Personal Hotspot settings. Apple specifies iPhone 12 or later, certain iPad Pro models, and iPad mini (6th generation) for this option. It is not a guaranteed fix: Apple cautions that enabling it may reduce internet performance and Wi‑Fi security for connected devices. See Apple’s Wi‑Fi troubleshooting steps.

If a Mac cannot use the iPhone hotspot over USB
- Update macOS, then connect the iPhone to the Mac with a data-capable USB cable whose connectors fit both devices.
- If the iPhone asks whether to trust the computer, approve the prompt. Check that the iPhone appears in Finder or iTunes.
- On the Mac, open System Settings > Network and look for the iPhone USB network service. If it is missing, use Apple’s instructions to add it; if it is listed but inactive, toggle it off and back on.
Apple notes that a computer may connect to the hotspot when the iPhone is plugged in. Turn Personal Hotspot off when it is not needed to avoid unwanted data use. The USB checks are documented in Apple’s troubleshooting article.
If Instant Hotspot between Apple devices is not working
Keep the devices near each other and make sure Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth are on. They must use the same Apple Account, or the other person must be set up through Family Sharing. With this same-account or configured-family connection, Instant Hotspot can connect without entering the Wi‑Fi password, and Allow Others to Join is not required. If the receiving device is not part of that Apple Account or Family Sharing setup, use regular Wi‑Fi, USB, or Bluetooth connection steps instead; enable Allow Others to Join when required for a regular connection.
If you are trying to connect with Bluetooth
Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on both devices and that they are paired. Apple lists Bluetooth as a way to share an iPhone’s connection, but its cited guidance does not provide a full Bluetooth-specific troubleshooting sequence. For exact pairing steps on your computer or other device, follow Apple’s connection instructions.

Reset network settings only as a later step
If the checks for your connection method do not help, Apple lists Reset Network Settings as a later troubleshooting option. Before using it, note that the reset removes saved Wi‑Fi networks and passwords as well as cellular, VPN, and APN settings. If your iPhone is managed by work or school, check with its administrator first. Follow Apple’s current reset instructions for the steps on your iOS or iPadOS version.
