If your iPhone haptics have stopped working, first check Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Vibration and turn on Vibration. Then check the setting for the specific feedback you’re missing: calls and alerts, keyboard typing, or system interactions each have a separate control. If vibration fails only in Silent Mode, allow haptics in that mode and check Focus.
First identify what is not vibrating
Different iPhone features use different haptic settings. Work out whether vibration is missing everywhere or only in one context:

- Calls and alerts: incoming calls, texts, and other notifications.
- Keyboard: the tactile response while typing.
- System interactions: feedback from system controls and other interface actions.
- Silent Mode only: vibration works in other sound modes but not when the iPhone is silenced.
This distinction helps narrow down the setting to check instead of changing unrelated options.
Turn on the iPhone’s global vibration setting
- Open Settings > Accessibility > Touch.
- Tap Vibration and turn it on.
This is the global control. When it is off, vibration is disabled, including vibration for earthquake, tsunami, and other emergency alerts, according to Apple’s guidance on turning off vibration. If haptics are missing in multiple contexts, check this setting before troubleshooting each feature separately.

Fix vibration for calls and alerts
- Open Settings > Sounds & Haptics.
- Tap Haptics.
- Choose an option that allows haptics in your current sound mode. For example, choose Always Play or Play in Silent Mode if you want alerts to vibrate while the phone is silenced.
The available choices include Always Play, Play in Silent Mode, Don’t Play in Silent Mode, and Never Play. Never Play disables vibration for incoming calls and alerts. You can also check the vibration pattern assigned to an individual sound category; Apple’s iPhone sounds and vibrations guide explains these controls.
If your iPhone does not vibrate in Silent Mode
Silent Mode does not automatically mean vibration is disabled. Open Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Haptics and select Play in Silent Mode. Apple gives this as the setting to use when you want calls and alerts to vibrate while the phone is silent; see If your iPhone doesn’t vibrate in Silent Mode.

Also check whether Do Not Disturb is active: open Control Center > Focus. If Do Not Disturb is highlighted, turn it off temporarily and test again. Focus can affect whether expected calls or alerts come through.
Fix keyboard haptics
- Open Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Keyboard Feedback.
- Turn on Haptic.
- If it is already on but typing still has no tactile response, confirm Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Vibration is also on.
Keyboard haptics has its own switch and depends on the global Vibration setting. Apple notes that using keyboard haptics may affect battery life. Its instructions apply to iOS 16 or later.

Fix haptics for system controls and interactions
For taps and other system feedback, open Settings > Sounds & Haptics and check System Haptics. This switch controls haptics for system controls and interactions; it is separate from the vibration patterns and behavior for incoming calls and alerts. See Apple’s guide to iPhone sounds and vibrations.
Use the symptom to choose the setting

When settings do not restore vibration
If vibration still fails in every context after these checks, contact Apple or a qualified repair provider for a device-specific diagnosis. Apple’s general speaker and touchscreen support guidance does not establish a universal haptic hardware test or identify one replacement part for every iPhone. The cause and any repair depend on the model and diagnosis, so do not assume a particular component has failed.

Menu names and available controls can vary by iOS version and iPhone model. Apple’s keyboard instructions cover iOS 16 or later, while its current iPhone User Guide includes an iOS 27 page; Apple does not provide a complete version-by-version and model-by-model setting matrix in the cited material.
