If an iPhone forward shows only a sender line, part of a thread, or missing images, first determine whether the content is absent or merely displayed poorly. Compare the original email, the draft, the sent copy, and the recipient’s view before changing settings. If the sent copy is complete, the problem is probably rendering on your phone or the recipient’s mail client; if the sent copy is truncated, Mail did not insert the quoted content correctly.
First, check whether the text is really missing
- Open the original message in Apple Mail and expand every collapsed section, including See More.
- Start a forward and inspect the entire draft. Scroll through the quoted section rather than judging it from the first screen.
- Send a test copy to yourself, then inspect it in Apple Mail and in your provider’s webmail.
- Ask the recipient whether the message is absent, visually clipped, or missing only images and attachments.
Use the results to identify the failure:
- Original complete, draft incomplete: Mail’s quoting or thread-rendering step failed.
- Draft and sent copy complete, recipient sees less: The recipient’s client may be collapsing or mis-rendering complex HTML.
- Original incomplete everywhere: The message may not have finished downloading, or its HTML may be malformed.
- Text present but images absent: Remote images, inline content, download state, or account policies are more likely than text truncation.
Try these quick fixes in Apple Mail
Forward again from the message list
Cancel the incomplete draft, return to the inbox or message list, swipe left on the message (or open its message actions), choose More or the reply-actions menu, and tap Forward. This is a user-reported workaround, not an Apple-guaranteed repair; it has been described in Apple Community reports such as this iOS 13 report.
Expand the thread before forwarding
Conversation view can hide older messages. Open the thread, scroll to the bottom, expand every collapsed message, then forward the specific message you need. A thread is a group of messages, not necessarily one fully expanded document.
Select the original text, then forward
- Open the original email and expand it fully.
- Touch and hold in the message and tap Select All.
- Tap the reply/action button and choose Forward.
- Review the inserted content before sending.
This reported workaround can also select signatures, tracking text, navigation links, and unwanted history, so remove anything you do not intend to send. Another Apple Community discussion describes similar behavior: forwarding with the original content missing.

Use Forward when attachments matter
Apple Mail may ask whether to Include or Don’t Include original attachments. Choose Include, then scroll through the draft to confirm that files and inline images are actually present. Replying is not equivalent to forwarding and may not carry the original files. If an attachment is absent, touch and hold it and save it to Files or Photos, then attach it manually; Apple documents this workflow at Download email attachments in Mail on iPhone.
Fix layout problems that only look like truncation
Change quote indentation
Go to Settings > Apps > Mail and turn off Increase Quote Level. This reduces indentation and can make nested replies easier to read. It does not restore text that was never inserted, repair broken HTML, or recover an attachment. Apple documents the control and forwarding workflow in Reply to and forward emails in Mail on iPhone.
Account for complex HTML
Newsletters and long business messages often contain tables, tracking pixels, remote images, nested replies, and narrow-screen formatting. Rotate the iPhone, scroll slowly through the composer, and send a plain-text or simplified version when formatting is the problem. For important images, save them and attach them as separate files.

Update, restart, and isolate the account
Update the software and restart
Install any available iOS update for Apple Mail. If you use Gmail or Outlook, update that app separately. Restart the iPhone as a low-risk reset for temporary rendering or synchronization faults; Google includes restarting among its Gmail troubleshooting steps.
Test the provider’s webmail
Open the account outside Apple Mail and forward the message there:
- Gmail: mail.google.com
- Outlook.com: outlook.live.com
- iCloud Mail: icloud.com/mail
- Work Exchange: your organization’s Outlook Web Access address
If webmail sends the complete message, Apple Mail or the mobile app is the likely source. If webmail also truncates it, investigate the original HTML, server synchronization, account policy, or recipient client. Webmail is also the safer choice for long threads and business records.

Gmail-specific checks
For the Gmail app, Google recommends updating the app, checking the connection, enabling Background App Refresh, reviewing sync settings, checking Google Account storage, and restarting the iPhone. See Google’s Gmail sync guidance. Actions in another synchronized client, including Apple Mail, can affect what appears in Gmail; compare the web view using Google’s missing-message guidance.
Outlook and Exchange checks
Update Outlook for iOS and test the same account in webmail. Microsoft lists deleting and re-adding an account as a possible synchronization remedy in its Outlook-for-iOS guidance. Do this only after confirming server-side copies exist and saving important drafts. Work or school accounts may require passwords, multifactor authentication, mobile-management approval, or administrator assistance. If forwarding still cuts off content
Use another sending path
Forward from webmail or the provider’s Gmail or Outlook app. This can bypass an Apple Mail-only quoting or rendering fault, but it is not a guarantee against malformed source HTML or server-side problems.

Create a new message
For short, urgent text, copy only the relevant words into a new email. This gives you control over the content but loses original formatting, headers, embedded links, and possibly attachments. Save and reattach important files separately.
Preserve evidence for high-consequence messages
For legal, compliance, or business records, keep the original message, full headers when available, attachments, and sent copy. Export or download the message from webmail rather than relying on a complete-looking mobile preview.

What the evidence says about an iOS bug
Apple Community users reported forwarded messages containing headers but not the original body during iOS 13.1–13.1.3. Those reports document a historical failure mode, not proof that every current iOS release has the same bug. Do not assume a version-wide defect until the same behavior is reproduced in the current software and confirmed by an official Apple statement.

Prevent forwarding mistakes
- Expand long threads before choosing Forward.
- Review the complete draft, not just its first screen.
- Choose Include when Mail asks about original attachments.
- Send a test copy to yourself for important messages.
- Use webmail and preserve the original when formatting, attachments, or records matter.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Increase Quote Level fix missing text?
No. It changes the indentation of quoted text under Settings > Apps > Mail; it does not restore content that Mail failed to insert.
Why does Forward show only the previous sender’s name?
The thread may be collapsed, the source message may not have fully loaded, or Mail’s quoting step may have failed. Expand the thread, cancel the draft, and try forwarding from the message list or webmail.
Why are images missing while the text remains?
Images may be remote or inline, not fully downloaded, blocked by a recipient client, or stripped by an account policy. Save important images or attachments and add them manually.
Can deleting and re-adding an account erase drafts?
It can remove locally stored, unsynchronized drafts. Confirm that messages exist on the provider’s server, save important drafts, and be prepared to authenticate again before removing an account.

Compare Apple Mail, the provider’s app, and webmail. A failure limited to Apple Mail points to its composer or rendering; a failure everywhere points to the source message, account, provider, or recipient client.
