Instagram login failures are not all password problems. The quickest safe route is to identify the message you see, test Instagram in a browser, and then use the matching recovery path from Instagram’s official I Can’t Log In Help Center page.

Try the least destructive checks first
- Confirm the username, email address, phone number, and country code are correct.
- If several Instagram accounts use one email address, enter the username instead.
- Type the password manually once rather than trusting an old saved credential.
- Open Instagram in a mobile or desktop browser and try signing in.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and cellular data. Temporarily disable a VPN, proxy, or aggressive network filter.
- Update Instagram from the device’s official app store, force-close it, and restart the phone.
- On Android, clear Instagram’s cache. On iPhone, offload or reinstall the app if you still have a working recovery method.
These are general app and network checks, not guaranteed account-recovery fixes. Reinstalling can remove a locally saved session without restoring access.
Reset a forgotten or rejected password
- At the login screen, choose Forgot password?, Forgotten password?, or the equivalent recovery link.
- Enter the username, email address, or phone number associated with the account.
- Request a login link or password-reset message.
- Check the correct inbox, spam and junk folders, text-message filters, and alternate inboxes.
- Open the newest message promptly and complete the reset.
- Create a unique password that has not been used on another service, then sign in manually.
Instagram treats password recovery, broken links, missing reset messages, wrong-account resets, and loss of access to the linked email or phone as separate cases. Use the relevant branch on its official Help Center page.
When the reset link behaves incorrectly
- It opens another account: request the reset with the username instead of an email address shared by multiple accounts.
- It is expired or fails: request a fresh link and use only the newest message.
- The email says the address changed: stop using ordinary password reset and follow the hacked-account steps below.
- You received an unsolicited reset email: do not click it. Secure the account through Instagram’s official channels and change the email password if compromise is possible.
- No account is found: check spelling, old email addresses, alternate usernames, and whether the username may have been changed.
Recover an account that may have been hacked
- Search your inbox for a message from
[email protected]saying the email address changed. - If the message contains Secure my account, use that control inside the genuine Instagram security message.
- If the password and other details also changed, request a login link or security code through Instagram’s recovery flow. The official instructions may ask for a username, email address, phone number, CAPTCHA, and an email or SMS link.
- If the link fails, use the support or identity-confirmation option offered on a mobile device.
- Complete any identity check accurately. Instagram may offer a video-selfie review, but it is not available to every account and approval is not automatic.
Instagram says the video is used to confirm that the person is real and may establish authorization; it says the video is not visible on Instagram and is deleted within 30 days. Submit it only inside an official Instagram or Meta flow, never to someone who contacts you by DM, email, or an unrelated website. See the official hacked-account instructions.

After you regain access
- Change the Instagram password and the password for the associated email account if it may be compromised.
- Check the account email address and phone number.
- Turn on 2FA and generate new backup codes.
- Review login activity and log out unfamiliar devices.
- In Accounts Center, inspect linked accounts and remove anything you do not recognize.
- Revoke suspicious third-party app access.
- Warn contacts about suspicious messages, links, or money requests sent from the account.
Fix a two-factor authentication lockout
Authenticator-app code unavailable
- Verify that you are using the correct authenticator entry and account.
- Set the phone’s date and time to automatic.
- Check the old phone, a password manager, secure note, printed record, or other location where backup codes may be stored.
- Look for an already trusted device that is still signed in.
Do not attempt to disable 2FA before proving ownership. Once access is restored, replace and securely store the backup codes.
SMS code unavailable
- Confirm signal, that the number is active, and that the country code is correct.
- Check carrier spam filtering and short-code blocking.
- Consider whether an attacker changed the number.
- Try another approved method if one is offered.
Avoid requesting codes repeatedly in rapid succession; it can make it harder to identify the current code and may trigger temporary security restrictions.

Login approval or trusted-device prompt fails
- Check notifications on a device where Instagram is already signed in.
- Approve only a login attempt you initiated; reject unfamiliar requests.
- If no trusted device or backup method works, use Instagram’s official recovery and support flow.
Meta has announced passkeys for Instagram through its newer Meta Account experience, but availability depends on rollout, region, account, and device. It has also described adaptive recovery and a Meta AI support assistant rolling out in eligible locations; neither feature is universal. If Instagram says the account is disabled or suspended
- Read the exact message shown at login.
- Use Request review, Appeal, or the other review button displayed in the app or browser.
- Give a concise, factual explanation and provide only the information requested.
A disabled account is an enforcement or restriction case, not an ordinary password problem. Clearing cache, resetting the password, or creating replacement accounts will not restore the original account. Do not pay anyone claiming to be an Instagram employee, and do not assume an appeal will succeed or that a particular form will remain available.

When Instagram works in a browser but not the app
- Confirm that you can sign in at Instagram’s official website.
- Update the app, force-close it, and restart the device.
- Check free storage and automatic date and time.
- Switch networks and temporarily disable a VPN or proxy.
- Clear Android cache, or reinstall the iPhone or Android app.
- Remove and re-add the account only if you have working recovery details.
- Use the browser temporarily instead of repeatedly entering credentials in the broken app.
- From an authenticated session, report a technical problem if the app still fails.
Browser success is evidence against a simple bad-password explanation, but account-specific security checks can still differ by device.
When reset email or SMS never arrives
- Search all inbox folders for Instagram, Meta, and
[email protected]. - Confirm the username and whether the email is shared by several Instagram accounts.
- Verify the phone number, country code, service, and carrier filtering.
- Consider whether an attacker changed the email or phone.
- Try a previously used device or network, then use the lost-access recovery route rather than repeatedly requesting ordinary links.

When Instagram keeps saying “Something went wrong”
Test the account in a browser, on another device, and over another network. If only one device fails, prioritize local app troubleshooting. If many users are reporting the same failure through reputable outage reporting or current news coverage, wait and retry later instead of repeatedly resetting the password. Outage status changes, so verify it at the time you publish or read this article; do not rely on a permanent claim that Instagram is up or down.
Avoid recovery scams
Use only Instagram or Meta’s in-app and official Help Center flows. Instagram says authentic account communications can be checked in its Emails from Instagram area. A familiar-looking sender address alone is not proof that a message is genuine. Paid “recovery agents,” unsolicited support DMs, requests for codes, and websites asking for your password or identity video are strong warning signs.
