How to Fix Input Lag When Playing Retro Games on a Modern TV

Start with Game Mode, then check TV processing and each device in the video chain. A retro scaler can help with signal handling, but results depend on the full setup.

If your retro game feels slow to respond on a modern TV, start by enabling Game Mode on the TV input connected to the console. If that does not help, review optional picture processing and check every device between the console and screen. A scaler may help when the TV struggles with an older console’s video signal, but it cannot guarantee zero lag or correct delay caused elsewhere.

Why is there a delay when I play games on my TV?

A modern TV may process incoming video and audio before displaying them, adding delay between a control input and what you see or hear. Nintendo describes this as a possible cause of lag in Switch TV Mode: the television processes signals from the console before outputting the image and audio. Its support guidance recommends trying Game Mode or a similar setting to shorten that processing time (Nintendo Support).

With a retro console, the signal path can include the console, its cable, a converter or scaler, an HDMI input, and the TV’s picture processing. A delay that remains after changing the TV setting is not automatically the TV’s fault; isolate the chain one part at a time.

Try these fixes in order

  1. Enable Game Mode on the console’s input

Open the TV’s picture or input settings and choose Game Mode, or the equivalent low-latency mode, for the input connected to the console. Roku likewise describes Game Mode as a way to reduce input lag (Roku Support). Settings can be specific to an input, so verify the one you are actually using.

After entering the game, you also need to manually bind key positions in the game

  2. Check automatic low-latency switching

If the TV has Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM), check the manual to confirm that your model supports it and that it is enabled. Roku says supported Roku TV models can switch into Game Mode when a game starts; availability and behavior depend on the model.

  3. Review optional picture processing

Consult the TV manual and turn off picture-processing features that are optional and unnecessary for gameplay. Menu names and available controls vary by TV, so there is no universal list of switches to disable. Change one setting at a time and test the same game and input after each change.

  4. Check the whole video chain

Confirm that the console’s cable or converter is connected as intended, that any scaler supports the console’s output, and that the TV is displaying the correct input. If possible, simplify the chain temporarily to identify whether a particular device or setting changes the symptom.

  5. Consider a retro gaming scaler only if the signal is the problem

A dedicated scaler may be worth considering when a modern TV handles an older console’s signal poorly. Scalers convert and scale video, and their available modes can affect image treatment and buffering. Before choosing one, check compatibility with the console’s output and cable, handling of progressive or interlaced video where relevant, output resolution, and latency information for your specific setup.

What a scaler can—and cannot—fix

RetroTINK’s firmware documentation describes processing options for its hardware. Its 5X experimental firmware notes describe a 1080p “Min-Lag” mode that “should achieve line-doubler latency (~1 ms)” (RetroTINK-5X Experimental Firmware). That is the manufacturer’s qualified description of a scaler mode, not an independent measurement of total delay from a particular console through a TV.

There is no universal best scaler or guaranteed zero-lag result established for every console, signal, firmware, setting, and television. A scaler addresses video conversion and handling; it should not be expected to remove delay intrinsic to a game, console, or controller. Compare evidence for the complete console-to-display chain rather than relying on a single device’s feature label.

How to tell whether a change helped

  • Use the same console, game, TV input, and test action while comparing settings.
  • Change only one item at a time—such as Game Mode or a processing option—so you can identify which change affects the symptom.
  • If the result differs between inputs or with a converter or scaler removed, investigate that part of the chain rather than assuming the display is the only source.
  • When considering hardware, look for compatibility and latency evidence for your exact signal path; a feature description alone does not establish end-to-end performance.
