If a website puts your IP address in the wrong place, identify which geolocation provider or database supplied that result, then request a correction from that source. If you manage the network, a maintained geofeed may help keep its records current; if the result comes from a database on your own system, update that database. There is no single correction that changes every provider’s records, and IP location is an estimate rather than a guarantee of a precise or permanent location.
Why an IP address can show the wrong location
An IP address is not physically tied to one place. Geolocation providers estimate where it is used from network and other data, and the estimate can differ between providers. An IP range may also be reassigned, rotated, shared among users, or used across a wide area. Those conditions can make an older location inaccurate or make a city-level or postal-code correction impossible to confirm.

Cloudflare cautions that its IP locations are not guaranteed to match other providers and describes IP geolocation as an estimate, not an exact science. A result can therefore be wrong on one site and different elsewhere without either display proving what every provider has on record. (Cloudflare IP geolocation documentation)
First find out whose location result you are seeing
Before submitting a correction, record the IP address or range, the location currently shown, the location you believe is correct, and when you saw the mismatch. Then identify whether the result comes from a particular website or CDN, an external lookup service, or a GeoIP database installed by you or your organization. A correction submitted to one provider does not update other providers’ data.

- Bright, high-resolution 5” glass capacitive touchscreen display lets you easily view your route
- Get more situational awareness with alerts for school zones, speed changes, sharp curves and more
- View food, fuel and rest areas along your active route, and see upcoming cities and milestones
- View Tripadvisor traveler ratings for top-rated restaurants, hotels and attractions to help you make the most of road trips
- Directory of U.S. national parks simplifies navigation to entrances, visitor centers and landmarks within the parks
- A site or CDN: Check its documentation or support information to find the source of its IP location data. The correction must reach the provider whose result the site uses.
- An external lookup service: Use that service’s correction process; another provider’s accepted correction does not establish that this service will change its record.
- A local database: Check the database product and its update date before treating its record as a current provider error.

Cloudflare
If the incorrect result is from Cloudflare, its documentation directs users to a data correction form. Include the relevant IP range and the corrected country, state or province, city, and ZIP or postal code where applicable. Cloudflare reviews the request and may decline it if it cannot confirm the location. It says confirmed corrections generally take effect within a few business days; that is a published expectation, not a guarantee. Frequent address rotation—including mobile and carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT) use—can mean the submitted range has changed before review finishes. (Cloudflare IP geolocation documentation)
MaxMind: individual location corrections
MaxMind offers one-time location correction forms. If you submit without an account, verify the email address within 24 hours or the request will not be reviewed. MaxMind says these requests are typically reviewed within 1–2 business days; if accepted, the correction is included in the next database release. Review time is not a guaranteed resolution time, and the release schedule affects when corrected data becomes available. (MaxMind GeoIP location correction)

MaxMind may not accept a precise location for an address used across a wide area. If it cannot confirm the requested location, its guidance is to contact the ISP, which may be better placed to clarify how the network’s addresses are assigned or used. (MaxMind GeoIP location correction)

If the physical location is right but the displayed ISP or organization label is wrong, use MaxMind’s separate name-correction form rather than a location correction. It asks for the IP address or network, whether the requested change is to the ISP name, organization name, or both, and the desired name. If you operate the network, maintain a geofeed
For network operators, MaxMind says a GeoIP Exchange geofeed is preferable in most cases for proactive management. It can consume geofeeds following RFC 8805 and RFC 9632; its correction documentation says geofeeds are imported and reviewed once per business day. A geofeed is an ongoing route for communicating network location data, unlike a one-time form for an individual discrepancy. It still does not guarantee that every provider uses the feed or that every address can be represented at precise granularity. (MaxMind GeoIP location correction)
If the result comes from your own GeoIP database, update it
A local copy can become stale even when the provider’s current data has changed. Update the database before concluding that its underlying record remains incorrect. MaxMind recommends automating GeoIP or GeoLite updates and notes that accuracy declines over time when updates are not applied. Its update schedules vary by product: for example, GeoIP City, Country, Enterprise, ISP, and Connection Type are listed for weekday updates, while GeoIP Anonymous IP/Anonymous Plus, IP Risk, and User Count are listed for daily updates. Check the schedule for the exact product you use. (MaxMind database update schedule)

Choose a correction route that fits the network and the required precision
| Situation | Best next step | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| A one-off incorrect result in a provider’s lookup | Submit that provider’s location correction form. | The provider reviews the evidence; acceptance and timing are not guaranteed. |
| You operate the network and need to maintain its location data | Publish or maintain a geofeed supported by the provider. | It offers an ongoing data path, but does not guarantee uptake by every provider or precise placement. |
| Your application uses a local GeoIP database | Install current data and automate updates where possible. | Update frequency depends on the product and its published schedule. |
| The address is mobile, shared, frequently reassigned, or used over a wide area | Ask the ISP or network operator about address use; avoid expecting a stable city or postal-level answer. | The provider may be unable to confirm one user’s exact location for the range. |
| The decision requires high location precision or has compliance consequences | Use an appropriate first-party signal in addition to IP geolocation. | IP location alone is not a reliable basis for a high-precision decision. |
When IP location is not precise enough
Cloudflare advises against relying on IP geolocation alone when a highly precise location is required or when the result is compliance-critical. It recommends combining IP data with device GPS or other first-party signals, while obtaining appropriate consent and meeting privacy-law obligations. GPS is a separate location signal; using it does not correct a third-party provider’s IP database record. (Cloudflare IP geolocation documentation)

In an April 6, 2026 release note, MaxMind said it would reduce false positives where network users are dispersed across a subdivision or country. Its example change reduced some subdivision confidence values from 99 to 95; those are provider confidence values, not a universal accuracy percentage for IP geolocation.
