The reliable fix is to identify the exact browser error, verify DNS and port 443, confirm that the server presents a certificate covering the hostname, send the complete intermediate chain, check SNI and virtual-host selection, align reverse-proxy and origin encryption, and remove conflicting redirects. If the page loads but shows an insecure warning, repair HTTP resources as mixed content; certificate installation alone cannot do that.

Start by identifying what “HTTPS not working” means
Different symptoms point to different layers of the connection. Record the exact hostname, URL path, browser message, and whether the failure occurs on the apex domain, the www name, or a subdomain. Do not troubleshoot only the hostname that happened to work in your own browser.

Privacy or certificate warning
A privacy warning such as an invalid, untrusted, expired, or name-mismatch certificate usually means the endpoint is presenting the wrong certificate, an incomplete chain, an untrusted certificate, or a certificate that does not cover the hostname in the address bar. On a multi-site server, the certificate may belong to another virtual host.
Protocol or cipher error
A protocol error can indicate incompatible TLS settings, a disabled protocol or cipher, or a request reaching a listener that is not configured for the intended hostname. It can also appear when the certificate and virtual-host configuration are not aligned.

Redirect loop
A loop normally comes from two layers disagreeing about encryption. For example, an edge proxy may connect to the origin over HTTP while the origin redirects every HTTP request to HTTPS. The browser follows the redirect back to the edge, which repeats the same origin request.
Page loads with an insecure warning
When the document is delivered over HTTPS but images, scripts, stylesheets, fonts, API calls, or other resources still use http://, the browser reports mixed content. The certificate can be perfectly valid while the page remains partially insecure.

- Capture the symptom. Note the exact hostname and browser error, including whether it is a certificate, protocol, redirect, or mixed-content message.
- Check DNS. Confirm that the apex,
www, and relevant subdomains resolve to the intended edge or origin address. - Check reachability. Verify that TCP port 443 is open and that the request reaches the expected endpoint.
- Inspect the served certificate. Confirm the subject or SAN list contains the hostname entered by the visitor.
- Validate the chain. The server must send the leaf certificate plus every required intermediate certificate in the order expected by the web server.
- Check SNI and virtual hosts. Make sure the TLS listener selects the hostname-specific configuration rather than a default site.
- Align proxy and origin TLS. If a reverse proxy terminates TLS, determine whether it validates the origin certificate and whether the origin is actually serving HTTPS.
- Remove duplicate redirects. Give one layer clear ownership of the HTTP-to-HTTPS policy, or configure both layers so that they agree.
- Repair mixed content. Change HTTP resource references to HTTPS and update application or database values that still contain the old scheme.
- Retest every hostname and important path. Test both proxied and direct-origin routes when your architecture allows it.
Verify DNS and port 443 before changing certificates
A correctly issued certificate cannot help if DNS sends visitors to an old server, an unconfigured load balancer, or a different proxy. Query each public name separately and compare the result with the endpoint you intend to operate. Check both IPv4 and IPv6 records when they exist; an IPv6 address that points to an unconfigured host can make the problem appear intermittent.
Next, test TCP reachability to port 443 from outside the server’s local network. A firewall, security group, network access list, or provider-level filter can block the TLS handshake before the certificate is ever examined. If port 80 works but port 443 times out or refuses the connection, fix the listener or network policy first.
With a reverse proxy, determine where DNS terminates. The public address may belong to the edge while the origin is private. In that arrangement, a direct-origin test and a public test exercise different certificates and redirect rules, so label the results clearly rather than treating them as contradictory.

Inspect the certificate that visitors actually receive
Looking at the certificate file stored on disk is not enough. The decisive certificate is the one returned during a handshake for the requested hostname. Open the site in a browser, view the connection or certificate details, and record the subject, SAN entries, issuer, validity dates, and chain. The hostname must appear in the SAN list; a certificate for only the apex does not automatically cover www or an unrelated subdomain.
For a command-line check, OpenSSL can request a specific hostname with SNI:
openssl s_client -connect example.com:443 -servername example.com -showcerts
Replace example.com with the exact name being tested. Compare the certificate shown with the certificate configured for that virtual host. A test without the -servername value may select the server’s default certificate and give a misleading result on a multi-site system.
Inspect the handshake for the final verification result, the peer name, and the certificates returned. A successful TCP connection does not prove that the certificate is trusted or that the requested hostname is covered.
Fix hostname, SNI, and virtual-host mismatches
Server Name Indication lets one IP address host multiple HTTPS names. During the TLS handshake, the client sends the requested hostname; the server uses it to choose a certificate and TLS configuration. If the listener has no matching SNI or virtual-host entry, it may return a default certificate for another site.

Typical mismatch symptoms
- The certificate is valid for a different domain shown on the same server.
- The apex domain works, but
wwwor a subdomain shows a privacy error. - One network path returns the new certificate while another returns an old one because DNS records point to different endpoints.
- The configuration contains a certificate for the right site, but the HTTPS server block is not associated with the requested name.
Corrective checks
- List every hostname the site promises to serve.
- For each name, verify a matching HTTPS virtual-host or server-block declaration.
- Confirm the certificate and private key in that block belong together.
- Ensure the TLS listener uses SNI and that the intended block is not shadowed by an earlier default declaration.
- Reload the web server only after validating the configuration, then repeat the SNI-aware handshake test for each name.
Nginx documentation notes that the server must send the complete certificate chain and that OpenSSL can be used to check what is sent. The same principle applies regardless of which web server software terminates TLS.
Send the complete intermediate certificate chain
Browsers and intermediary services normally trust a certificate authority’s root certificate, not necessarily the issuing intermediate certificate. The server therefore needs to send the leaf certificate followed by the required intermediate certificates. Sending only the leaf can make some browsers appear to work while other browsers, mobile clients, monitoring tools, or a reverse proxy reject the connection.
What a correct chain looks like
- Leaf certificate: covers the requested hostname.
- Intermediate certificate or certificates: link the leaf to a trusted root.
- Root certificate: normally remains in the client trust store and is not required in the server bundle unless the server documentation specifically says otherwise.
Use the certificate bundle supplied by the issuing authority, preserve the required order, and configure the web server to present that bundle. Do not concatenate unrelated certificates or substitute a certificate from another hostname. After reloading, inspect the certificates returned over port 443 rather than assuming the file change took effect.
Cloud-based edge services perform a similar validation when they connect to your origin. If the origin omits an intermediate, the edge may be unable to build a trusted path even though a browser connecting directly appears tolerant.

Resolve Cloudflare error 526 and other proxy-origin failures
Error 526 means the edge cannot verify the SSL certificate on the origin server, so it refuses to establish the secure connection. The origin certificate may have the wrong hostname, an invalid date, an incomplete chain, an untrusted issuer for the selected mode, or a private key mismatch.

When Full (strict) is enabled
Full (strict) requires a valid origin certificate that the edge can verify. Check the origin directly, using the origin hostname and SNI where applicable, and confirm all of the following:
- The origin certificate covers the hostname the edge uses for the request.
- The certificate is within its validity period.
- The origin sends the complete intermediate chain.
- The origin presents the matching private key.
- Port 443 is reachable from the edge network.
Do not treat switching to a weaker encryption mode as the permanent repair. It can hide an origin configuration problem while leaving the connection between the edge and origin less protected. Correct the origin certificate and chain, then keep the strongest mode your architecture supports.
Direct and proxied tests
Temporarily route a controlled test hostname directly to the origin, or use an approved origin address, and compare the certificate and response with the public proxied hostname. A mismatch tells you which layer needs correction: the edge certificate and settings, or the origin listener and certificate.

Stop redirect loops by assigning clear ownership
HTTP-to-HTTPS redirects should be intentional and consistent. A common loop occurs when the edge receives HTTPS from the visitor, connects to the origin over HTTP, and the origin redirects that HTTP request to HTTPS. The edge then repeats the HTTP origin connection, producing an endless sequence.
How to trace the loop
- Request the original URL with redirects disabled so you can see the first response.
- Record every
Locationheader, scheme, hostname, and path in order. - Identify which layer issued each redirect: browser-facing edge, load balancer, web server, or application.
- Check whether the origin understands the original scheme through the proxy’s forwarded-protocol setting.
- Remove the duplicate rule or change the edge-to-origin encryption mode so the origin sees the scheme it expects.
Cloudflare recommends removing a conflicting origin redirect or using Full or a higher mode with a correctly configured origin certificate. Keep one canonical hostname policy as well: redirecting between the apex and www at multiple layers can create a second loop even when TLS itself is correct.

Repair mixed content after HTTPS starts working
Mixed content is separate from certificate validation. The HTML document may be securely delivered while embedded resources still use HTTP. Cloudflare describes this as a request for HTTP resources from a page served over HTTPS.
Find every insecure resource
- Open the browser developer tools and select the Console and Network panels.
- Reload the HTTPS page without clearing the evidence.
- Filter for mixed-content warnings and requests beginning with
http://. - Classify each URL as an image, script, stylesheet, font, iframe, API endpoint, video, or dynamically generated request.
Fix the source, not only the symptom
- Change hard-coded resource URLs in templates and stylesheets to HTTPS or protocol-relative application URLs where appropriate.
- Update database fields, CMS settings, API base URLs, and serialized content that still contain the HTTP scheme.
- Ensure third-party endpoints actually support HTTPS before changing references.
- Check redirects on API and media endpoints; a redirect that eventually reaches HTTPS can still trigger blocking or warnings for some resource types.
Automatic HTTPS Rewrites can help with eligible references, but they do not replace correcting application data and code. After changes, test pages with cached assets, authenticated requests, forms, and background API calls.

| Architecture | Where TLS terminates | Origin certificate validation | Hostname and SNI responsibility | Chain requirement | Redirect ownership | Mixed-content rewriting |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Direct-origin HTTPS | At the web server or load balancer serving the public address | Performed by each connecting client | The public server must select the correct virtual host for every hostname | The public endpoint must send the complete chain | Web server or application normally owns redirects | Must be fixed in the application or at a capable edge |
| Reverse-proxy HTTPS | At the edge; optionally again between edge and origin | Depends on the selected edge-to-origin mode; Full (strict) verifies the origin certificate | The edge and origin each need correct hostname handling and SNI where used | Both client-facing and origin-facing chains must satisfy their validator | Edge and origin rules must agree on scheme and canonical host | An edge feature may rewrite eligible URLs, but application references still need correction |
Use this distinction when reading test results. A valid edge certificate does not prove that the origin certificate is valid, and a valid origin certificate does not prove that DNS points visitors to that origin.
Work through a complete repair procedure
- Make an inventory. List the apex,
www, subdomains, alternate ports, API names, and canonical redirect target. - Capture baseline results. For each hostname, record DNS answers, port 443 reachability, certificate SANs, issuer, expiry, chain, HTTP status, and redirect sequence.
- Correct DNS or firewall issues. Point each name to the intended endpoint and allow the required HTTPS traffic.
- Install the matching certificate and key. Associate them with the correct HTTPS virtual host and verify that the key corresponds to the leaf certificate.
- Install the intermediate bundle. Configure the server to send the full chain in the required order.
- Validate and reload. Run the server’s configuration test, fix any reported errors, and reload rather than abruptly stopping the service.
- Test with SNI. Use a hostname-specific browser check or an OpenSSL command for every name.
- Fix proxy settings. If an edge is present, set an origin encryption mode that matches the origin’s actual TLS configuration and certificate.
- Normalize redirects. Keep one canonical scheme and hostname, remove duplicate rules, and make sure forwarded-protocol information is honored.
- Eliminate mixed content. Update templates, databases, scripts, stylesheets, and API endpoints, then reload affected pages.
- Retest from more than one network. Check the public route, direct-origin route where permitted, desktop and mobile clients, and both IPv4 and IPv6 paths.
Common failures and the precise fix
| Observed result | Likely cause | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Certificate names do not include the address-bar hostname | Wrong certificate or wrong virtual host selected | Add the hostname to the certificate or bind the correct certificate to its SNI server block. |
| Some clients trust the site and others reject it | Missing intermediate certificate | Install and serve the complete ordered chain. |
| Public site shows 526 | Edge cannot validate the origin certificate | Fix origin hostname coverage, validity, key pairing, chain, or port 443 reachability. |
| Requests alternate endlessly between HTTP and HTTPS | Conflicting edge and origin redirects | Trace each Location response and assign one consistent redirect policy. |
| Padlock appears but the page says not fully secure | HTTP subresources or API calls | Find mixed-content URLs in developer tools and update their source references. |
| Only one hostname fails on a shared server | Missing SNI or virtual-host entry | Add the hostname-specific HTTPS configuration and retest with SNI. |
| HTTPS times out | Port 443 listener, firewall, or DNS endpoint problem | Restore reachability before changing certificate files. |
Final verification checklist
- Every public hostname resolves to the intended endpoint.
- TCP port 443 accepts connections on every advertised address.
- The served certificate SAN list covers the exact hostname.
- The private key matches the leaf certificate.
- The endpoint sends all required intermediate certificates.
- SNI selects the intended virtual host instead of a default site.
- Proxy and origin encryption settings agree, with origin validation enabled where required.
- HTTP-to-HTTPS and canonical-host redirects produce one finite sequence.
- No page-critical resource is requested over HTTP.
- Apex,
www, subdomains, important paths, direct routes, and proxied routes have each been tested.
FAQ
Why does HTTPS still fail immediately after certificate installation?
The installed file may not be the certificate being served. DNS may point elsewhere, SNI may select a default virtual host, or the server may be missing an intermediate certificate. Inspect the live handshake for the exact hostname.
Is a certificate for the root domain also valid for www?
Only if www appears in the certificate’s SAN list, or the certificate uses a wildcard that covers it. Verify the names instead of assuming they are included.
Can I solve a 526 error by changing the proxy to a weaker mode?
That may bypass origin validation, but it does not repair the origin certificate or chain. Correct the origin and use the strongest mode compatible with it, especially Full (strict) when available.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why does the browser show a padlock while scripts are blocked?
The document’s certificate can be valid while scripts, fonts, images, or API calls still use HTTP. Those requests are mixed content and must be changed to HTTPS at their source.
Should the root certificate be included in the server bundle?
The server normally sends the leaf and required intermediates; clients generally already have trusted roots. Follow the bundle format required by your web server and certificate authority rather than appending unrelated certificates.
