If your phone’s hotspot is blocked, first check whether your exact mobile plan permits tethering and whether the carrier has enabled the feature. Android and iPhone both support sharing cellular data over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or USB, but the carrier controls availability and plan limits. When tethering is not included, ask about an eligible plan or a dedicated hotspot device rather than relying on unverified bypass tricks.
What a hotspot restriction usually means
A missing or unusable hotspot can reflect a plan limitation, a carrier provisioning issue, or a device-specific setup problem. “Unlimited data” alone does not establish whether tethering is included, how much hotspot data is allowed, or what happens when an allowance runs out. Those details depend on the carrier and exact plan.

For example, Verizon’s prepaid terms tie hotspot and tethering use to the allotment permitted by the plan and prohibit using smartphone data designated exclusively for phone use to connect other devices. T-Mobile’s network policy likewise says tethering is governed by plan terms and allotments; it notes that significant tethering usage can affect on-device network performance. These are examples of those carriers’ terms, not rules that apply to every carrier or plan. Check the terms for your own market and plan:
Check eligibility before changing settings
- Open your carrier account or plan details and look for hotspot, tethering, or mobile-hotspot allowances. Confirm whether the feature is included, whether it has a separate data limit, and what happens after that limit.
- Contact the carrier if the plan information is unclear or the hotspot option is missing. Ask whether tethering is enabled on your line and whether the specific plan supports it. Apple also advises checking both carrier enablement and plan support when Personal Hotspot is unavailable.
- If the carrier says the plan supports hotspot use but the setting still does not work, ask support to check provisioning and device compatibility. In some cases, carrier firmware on a transferred device may block hotspot functionality; this is a device- and carrier-specific possibility, not a universal cause.
Apple’s guidance for a missing or non-working Personal Hotspot is available at Apple Support. US Mobile describes a carrier-firmware issue affecting some transferred devices in its hotspot troubleshooting guidance.

Use the supported sharing method for your phone
Android: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or USB
Android phones can share mobile data over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or USB. Menu labels vary by device and Android version, so follow the instructions for your model. Some phones can also share a Wi-Fi connection by tethering, but that capability varies. Google warns that some carriers limit tethering or charge extra; check your plan before connecting another device. See Google’s Android tethering instructions.
iPhone: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or cable
On iPhone, Personal Hotspot shares the phone’s cellular connection, not an existing Wi-Fi connection. Availability, fees, and the number of devices that can connect depend on the carrier and iPhone model. To share by cable with a Windows PC, Apple says Apple Devices or iTunes must be installed. See Apple’s Personal Hotspot guide for connection steps and requirements.

Why TTL, APN, VPN, and relay workarounds are not dependable fixes
Changing TTL values, editing APN settings, routing traffic through a VPN, or using proxy and relay apps are sometimes presented online as ways to defeat hotspot limits. The available carrier and platform guidance does not establish that these techniques reliably evade restrictions, preserve speed, or comply with a particular plan. Their behavior can depend on the carrier, device, software, and plan.

Choose an authorized option for ongoing multi-device use
If you regularly connect several devices, compare eligible phone plans with data-only options and dedicated mobile hotspot devices. AT&T describes standalone hotspot devices and notes potential battery and allowance advantages over using a smartphone. A separate device does not remove plan limits: confirm its compatibility, the data plan it requires, the permitted hotspot allowance, and the total device and service cost before choosing. See AT&T’s connected-device options.
When comparing options, check the exact number of devices supported, available connection methods, the size and handling of the data allowance, setup requirements, and the effect on your phone’s battery if you use it as the hotspot. Carrier pricing and compatibility vary, so confirm current terms directly with the carrier.
