Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Start with reversible checks: confirm your PC meets the published requirements, update graphics drivers, verify the game files in Steam, and test whether background software or mods are involved. For stuttering or low FPS, adjust the frame-rate cap and graphics settings one at a time, while keeping the game on DirectX 12. The right fix depends on your hardware, launcher, game build, and the exact symptom; no single setting is established as a universal fix.
First, identify the problem and check your PC
Before changing settings, note whether Hogwarts Legacy crashes on launch or during play, any error message, the launcher and installed game build, and recent driver, game, or mod changes. If the problem occurs in a particular location, record that too. These details help distinguish a launch failure from an in-game crash or a performance problem.

Compare your system with the Steam listing. Its requirements are a baseline, not a promise of a particular frame rate on every PC.
| Steam PC listing | Minimum | Recommended |

| Processor | Intel Core i5-6600 or AMD Ryzen 5 1400 | Intel Core i7-8700 or AMD Ryzen 5 3600 |

| Storage | 85 GB available; HDD supported | 85 GB available; SSD preferred |
| Listing’s performance note | 720p/30 FPS at Low quality | 1080p/60 FPS at High quality |
These hardware and performance figures are from Steam’s Hogwarts Legacy PC system requirements, accessed in 2026. The resolution and frame-rate notes describe the listing’s minimum and recommended targets; they are not guaranteed results. If the game is installed on an HDD or you are short of space, an SSD may address a storage constraint, but the listing does not establish it as a general fix for crashes, stuttering, or low FPS.

Fix crashes and launch problems with reversible checks
- Update the graphics driver. Get the current driver through your PC maker’s or graphics-card maker’s supported update channel. If the crash began after a driver or game update, include that timing in your notes.
- Check antivirus quarantine. Look for Hogwarts Legacy files that security software has quarantined. Only consider a narrowly scoped exception if you have confirmed the affected file and trust its source; do not turn off protection broadly.
- Close background utilities temporarily. Exit external applications, including RGB keyboard software, and test whether the issue changes. This is an isolation step, not proof that the application is at fault.
- Verify the files in Steam. In Steam, open Library, right-click Hogwarts Legacy, choose Properties, then Installed Files, and select Verify integrity of game files. Wait for the check to finish before launching again.
- Use a clean boot only if conflicts remain plausible. Follow Microsoft’s official clean-boot procedure to temporarily start Windows with a reduced set of services and startup applications. If the game works in that state, re-enable items methodically to isolate a conflict; restore normal startup afterward.
These diagnostics and Steam verification steps are covered by Portkey Games Support’s PC Troubleshooting (Steam). A clean boot is a temporary diagnostic, not a recommended everyday startup configuration.
Keep DirectX 12; do not force DirectX 11
Portkey Games Support states, “Launching Hogwarts Legacy requires DirectX Version 12.” Its PC Features FAQ discourages workarounds that force DirectX 11 because they can cause launch and gameplay issues. Keep the game on DirectX 12 rather than using unofficial launch options or configuration edits to override it. See the Hogwarts Legacy PC Features FAQ.

Reduce stuttering and low FPS systematically
Change one setting at a time and compare performance in the same area of the game. A repeatable comparison is more useful than changing several graphics options at once, because it shows which adjustment made a difference.
- Try a lower frame-rate cap. Portkey Games Support says, “A lower framerate may reduce stuttering.” This is general guidance, not a guarantee for every PC.
- Lower resolution or graphics quality. These changes alter the work required of the GPU and can affect CPU load as well. Lower settings may improve frame stability at the cost of image quality; the result depends on the bottleneck in your system.
- Check the active GPU. On a system with more than one GPU, confirm that the game is using the intended graphics processor. Choosing the wrong GPU can limit performance.
- Keep the comparison consistent. Test the same scene after each change and note the cap, resolution, quality settings, and result. There is no official benchmark establishing a specific FPS gain for any one adjustment.
These graphics and frame-rate controls are described in the Portkey Games PC Features FAQ. The appropriate trade-off is the best stable frame rate your hardware can sustain at an image quality you find acceptable.
If you use visual mods, test without them
Portkey Games Support has warned that certain older third-party visual mods may break after engine changes and cause crashes. If a crash started after installing or updating a visual mod, remove the affected mod and its mod manager, then verify the game files in Steam or reinstall files as appropriate. Test the unmodded game before adding anything back. This advice applies to mod users; it is not a reason to remove unrelated files or tools.
The warning appears in the October 15, 2025 PC patch notes. A mod-related cause should not be assumed when the game is unmodded or the timing does not fit.

Read patch notes as version-specific evidence
Patch history can point to known, fixed issues, but it cannot diagnose a different PC’s current problem. The July 2024 notes described a temporary HAGS workaround for a known crash affecting some systems. The October 15, 2025 PC patch, build 1569535, reported AMD stability changes and Intel XeSS/XeFG improvements. Those notes apply to the issues and versions described there; they do not establish that all current crashes or performance problems have the same cause.
For details, see the July 2024 update and PC hotfix notes and the October 15, 2025 PC patch announcement.
When the problem persists
If the checks do not resolve the issue, submit a reproducible report through the official bug-report channel linked from Portkey Games Support’s PC Troubleshooting (Steam). Include your PC specifications, Windows and driver versions, launcher, game build, exact error or crash behavior, mod history, recent changes, and steps that reliably reproduce the issue. No published official statistic establishes how common these symptoms are, and the available patch notes do not show that a particular fix will apply to every affected PC.
