How to Fix Headless Chrome’s `command_buffer_proxy_impl.cc` Error

The command-buffer log line is not proof that Chrome failed. Check the actual output, inspect launch arguments and related errors, then test GPU or capture changes against the affected workload.

The `command_buffer_proxy_impl.cc` message usually signals a problem initializing or communicating with Chromium’s GPU command buffer; by itself, it does not prove that Chrome has stopped working. First check whether the browser exits, hangs, or produces incorrect output. Then investigate the GPU path only if the failure affects your task.

What the error means—and what it does not

Reports commonly show wording such as ContextResult::kTransientFailure: Failed to send GpuChannelMsg_CreateCommandBuffer or the newer Failed to send GpuControl.CreateCommandBuffer. These indicate trouble around GPU command-buffer creation or communication. They do not identify one universal cause, and the reports do not establish a single fix.

The message appears in different headless and automated Chromium setups. In one Puppeteer report, errors were intermittent while Chrome reportedly continued; other reports involved rendering defects or separate GPU crashes. Treat the line as a clue, not a diagnosis. Check the actual result: page load, screenshot, PDF, WebGL output, and browser-process health.

Diagnose the failure before changing flags

  1. Reproduce the same task. Record whether Chrome exits, hangs, or completes, and inspect whether the page or output is wrong. If the browser remains healthy and output is correct, the log line alone is not proof of a broken installation.
  2. Record the environment. Note the operating system, container or CI environment, Chrome or Chromium version, Puppeteer version, exact launch arguments, and whether the task uses WebGL, screenshots, or PDF printing.
  3. Inspect the final launch arguments. Log the exact array passed to Chromium. Remove unintended empty strings and malformed values before changing GPU settings.
  4. Look for the actionable error. Check nearby logs for GPU-process crashes or restarts, fatal errors, shared-memory permission failures, and application exceptions. A Puppeteer issue contains the command-buffer line alongside a fatal shared-memory permission check; the fatal error may be more useful to diagnose.
  5. Change one variable at a time. Keep the same input and workload when testing arguments, browser versions, or capture methods so you can tell which change affected the result.

Check for accidental empty launch arguments

One Puppeteer issue reporter traced a headless/default-page problem to an empty string in the launch arguments. Their environment-variable handling split an empty value and passed "" to Chromium; they also reported that creating a new page resolved their default-page problem. This is a case-specific report, not evidence that empty arguments explain every command-buffer error.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Print the arguments immediately before launch and look for empty entries, unexpected whitespace, or flags whose values were not populated. Fix the code that builds the array rather than adding another flag to compensate.

Compare GPU and capture options when rendering is wrong

If the affected output uses WebGL, maps, screenshots, or PDF printing, GPU and rendering configuration may be relevant. Choose a test based on the workload rather than applying a flag as a universal repair.

Approach When to test it Trade-off
Keep GPU rendering enabled When the task depends on WebGL or accelerated rendering. May expose a driver or GPU-process issue.
Disable GPU or compare software rendering As a diagnostic comparison when the workload can tolerate software rendering. May not fix the issue and may change or break WebGL output. Treat --disable-gpu as an experiment, not a guaranteed fix.
Change how the application output is captured When a WebGL canvas is missing or black in a PDF. A screenshot may work better for a particular page, but is not a general repair for Chrome.
Test a different browser channel or version When the browser and automation versions may be mismatched or a regression is suspected. Evidence for this remedy is anecdotal; test it as a controlled compatibility check.

In a Three.js discussion, a commenter reported that preserveDrawingBuffer helped with PDF output, but also caused unexpected issues; they ultimately used screenshots. That is a workload-specific workaround, not a general Chrome setting. For missing map or WebGL content, verify the page is fully loaded and compare the affected output with a simpler screenshot before attributing the defect to the command-buffer message.

Retest with a deliberately matched setup

Once you have isolated a likely cause, align the browser binary and automation setup intentionally and rerun the same workload. A Mapbox report mentions trying a different Chrome channel while resolving a version-sync issue, but it does not establish that changing channels generally fixes this error. Keep a record of the known-good versions and arguments if the change resolves your particular failure.

Common symptoms and next steps

  • Only stderr contains the message; output is correct: confirm the process completed and the result is usable before treating the log as a failure.
  • Chrome exits or hangs: inspect adjacent fatal errors and GPU-process logs; do not assume the command-buffer line is the root cause.
  • A map or WebGL content is missing: check page readiness, compare GPU-enabled and software-rendering behavior, and verify the browser/automation versions.
  • A PDF has a black WebGL region: compare PDF printing with screenshot capture. Treat preserveDrawingBuffer as a specific experiment because it has reported side effects.
  • A shared-memory permission error appears too: investigate that separate fatal error and its environment permissions rather than focusing only on the GPU message.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is a website screenshot rather than debugging a local Chromium installation, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API. It accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers indicate the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents.

For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
