How to Build a Crypto Market Dashboard With Free Exchange APIs

You can build a read-only crypto dashboard using public exchange APIs: use REST for the initial snapshot and occasional history or refresh requests, then use a WebSocket feed for live updates. Start with one exchange and a small watchlist. Show the exchange, trading pair, quote currency, and update time next to every price; add rate-limit handling and stale-data warnings before expanding the dashboard.

What “free API” means for a crypto dashboard

Public market data can be enough for a dashboard that only displays prices and market activity. It does not mean unlimited requests, unrestricted redistribution, or that every endpoint works without registration. Limits and access conditions vary by provider, product, endpoint, IP address, and account. Check the current terms for the specific feed you plan to use, especially before making a public or commercial dashboard.

Keep the first version read-only. A market display does not need trading permissions or account credentials. If you later add private account data or trading, make authenticated requests on a server, use least-privilege credentials, and keep keys out of browser code. Binance documents a market-data-only Spot REST base endpoint at https://data-api.binance.vision; confirm the requirements for each endpoint you use.

Choose a source that matches the screen

Begin with one venue and a short list of pairs. Pick it based on the assets and quote currencies you need, the data type and update cadence, geographic availability, and the provider’s current limits and usage terms—not on a claim that one exchange is best for everyone.

Source or approach Useful for What to account for
Exchange REST API Initial price snapshots, occasional refreshes, and historical or backfill requests. Requests are subject to endpoint-specific limits and may be weighted differently. REST is request/response, not a push feed.
Exchange WebSocket Ongoing ticker, trade, or order-book updates without repeatedly polling for changes. Subscribe only to needed products and channels; handle connection drops, subscription limits, and reconnects.
Aggregated market-data API Market-wide rankings, market capitalization, or a normalized view across venues, if the provider offers the required data. Free quotas, signup requirements, redistribution rights, and commercial terms are not established here. Verify the selected provider’s current plan and terms.

Exchange feeds describe activity on their own venues. If you show more than one venue, keep prices separate or document how any combined value is calculated. Different order books, products, and quote currencies can produce different values; do not present one exchange’s quote as a universal market price.

Separate the initial load from live updates

Load a snapshot with REST

Use REST when the dashboard opens, for occasional refreshes, and when you need historical data or to fill gaps after a disconnect. Avoid turning a historical endpoint into a rapid polling feed. Coinbase’s API FAQ advises real-time users to use trade and book endpoints with WebSocket feeds rather than frequently polling historical rates; that FAQ uses legacy Coinbase Pro terminology, so check current Exchange documentation for endpoint details.

Stream changes with WebSocket

Use a WebSocket when the display needs continuing updates. Binance describes WebSocket Streams as push-based, in contrast to REST’s HTTP request/response model, and identifies dashboards, analytics, and reporting as use cases. Coinbase Exchange documents ticker and order-book channels; its ticker-batch channel updates every five seconds when a value changes, and its heartbeat channel updates once per second for supported products. Those cadences apply to the documented Coinbase feeds, not to WebSockets generally.

Prefer one managed connection with the subscriptions the screen needs over one connection per widget. Coinbase’s Exchange connection policy, effective June 24, 2024, sets a default of ten subscriptions per product and channel, plus a rate of ten subscription requests per second with a burst of 1,000 requests. Confirm current limits and the exact interpretation in the provider’s documentation before deployment.

Keep each displayed value traceable

Store enough information to explain where a price came from and how fresh it is. A practical normalized record includes:

  • Venue and the provider’s original product or pair symbol.
  • Base asset and quote asset, such as the two currencies in a trading pair.
  • Value and the source event or update timestamp, when supplied.
  • Receive or fetch timestamp recorded by your own service.
  • Source channel or endpoint.

Preserve the raw provider symbol alongside normalized fields so you can diagnose symbol-mapping mistakes. Treat source time and receive time as different facts: the first describes the event according to the feed, while the second records when your system observed it. Binance Spot REST documentation says JSON time and timestamp fields are milliseconds by default, with an optional microsecond header. Normalize units explicitly rather than assuming timestamps from different providers use the same unit.

Build rate limits and recovery into the data layer

Read the current limits for each endpoint and connection type before release; REST quotas and WebSocket subscription rules are not interchangeable. For context, Kraken’s public Spot REST rate-limit guidance, updated October 1, 2026, says one call per second or less remains within limits, while noting that exact rules differ by endpoint and pair. Binance uses endpoint-specific request weights and IP-based limits: excessive requests can return HTTP 429, and repeatedly failing to back off can lead to an HTTP 418 IP ban. These are provider-specific rules, not universal crypto API limits.

  • Use a per-provider scheduler so one part of the dashboard cannot accidentally flood an endpoint.
  • Cache recent responses where the display can tolerate it, and avoid duplicate requests for the same data.
  • On rate limits or transient errors, honor any retry timing provided and use bounded backoff instead of retrying continuously.
  • For WebSockets, track connection health, reconnect after a drop with bounded retries, and restore only the subscriptions the screen needs.
  • Record errors and the time of the last successful update; surface connection state and data age to users.

Binance’s developer documentation, last modified June 26, 2026, advises reviewing product-specific limits and handling retries, connection health, reconnection, and API error monitoring. Limits and policies can change, so recheck the provider documentation for the selected product at implementation and release time.

A practical build sequence

  1. Define the screen. Decide whether it needs last-trade prices, ticker summaries, order-book depth, history, rankings, or a combination. Choose a small watchlist and one venue first.
  2. Fetch a REST snapshot. Populate the initial screen and record both the provider timestamp and your receive time where available.
  3. Add only the necessary stream subscriptions. Use a WebSocket for ongoing updates, subscribe to the required products and channels, and reuse a managed connection where the provider permits it.
  4. Normalize without erasing provenance. Convert provider payloads to an internal record while retaining the raw symbol, venue, quote currency, timestamp units, and source channel.
  5. Implement limits and recovery. Schedule requests, cache appropriately, back off on errors, reconnect streams, and record the last successful update.
  6. Test degraded states. Confirm the interface handles a slow response, a rate-limit response, a missing update, a disconnect, and a resumed stream without claiming old data is live.
  7. Review terms before publishing. Check current quotas, geographic availability, caching, attribution, and redistribution conditions for every provider and data product you rely on.

When an aggregator is worth considering

An aggregator may reduce integration work if the dashboard needs rankings, market capitalization, or a normalized response covering multiple venues. The exchange documentation described above does not establish the current free quotas, signup conditions, redistribution rights, or commercial-use terms of any independent aggregator. Verify those items in the aggregator’s own current plan and legal terms before building around it or describing its service as free.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
