GTA Online launch failures after an update are not one problem with one universal fix. The right first step depends on whether you are on Windows PC, PlayStation 5, or Xbox Series X|S; whether the game stops at the launcher, before the main menu, or when entering Online; and the exact error text or code.
On PC, finish any pending update and verify the installed files before reinstalling. If the message mentions BattlEye, correct its launcher setting and remove conflicting software or launch arguments. On PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, the message that required files could not be downloaded usually calls for a service-status and connection check, followed by a platform-specific cache reset. Start by identifying the failure stage
Close GTA V completely, then note exactly where it fails when you try again. A game that never reaches the main menu is a different case from one that opens Story Mode but refuses to enter GTA Online. Write down your platform, launcher or store, update name if shown, exact wording, error code, and whether Story Mode works. Also note whether the failure began immediately after the update or only after moving the installation, changing antivirus settings, or adding a graphics mod. Those details distinguish an incomplete update from a service, anti-cheat, or hardware problem.

Windows PC: complete the update and verify files
1. Finish downloads and restart cleanly
- Exit GTA V and the Rockstar Games Launcher. Also close Steam or Epic if it is managing the installation.
- Open the launcher or store again and wait for every GTA V download, patch, or “update required” task to finish. Do not start the game while the queue is paused or still applying files.
- Restart the launcher and try GTA V once more. Record any new code rather than repeatedly clicking Play.
Rockstar associates error code 134 with a game version that may not be up to date, often because a recent GTAV update was not applied. That is a possible cause described by Rockstar, not a diagnosis for every launch failure. If the launcher displays an update loop, let it complete once, restart the launcher, and then move to verification rather than canceling and restarting the download indefinitely.
2. Verify the installation before reinstalling
Rockstar says that verifying game-file integrity can resolve several kinds of issues and ensure that the game and supporting files are current. Verification compares the installed data with the platform’s expected files and replaces missing or damaged items; it does not erase your save games. It can still require a download, so leave enough free storage and allow the process to finish without putting the computer to sleep.
- Rockstar Games Launcher: Sign in, open Settings, select Grand Theft Auto V under My installed games, and choose Verify Integrity. Wait for the scan and any download to complete before launching.
- Steam: Open Library, right-click Grand Theft Auto V, choose Properties, select Local Files, and choose Verify integrity of game files. The wording can vary slightly with Steam updates, but it is the local-file verification command in the game’s Properties window.
- Epic Games: Open your library, use the game’s options menu, and select the platform’s Verify command. Keep Epic open until it reports completion.
Launch again through the same platform after verification. If the scan reports files that it cannot repair, or the problem returns immediately, reinstall through that platform as a later step. Reinstallation is slower and consumes substantially more data, so it is not the first response to a post-update error. Do not delete the installation folder manually before using the platform’s uninstall or reinstall controls; doing so can leave the launcher with an incorrect path and create a second problem.
3. Handle code 134 precisely
Rockstar describes code 134 as “The Rockstar Game Services are unavailable and offline play could not be verified.” Its documented possibility is an outdated game version, particularly when a recent update has not been installed. Confirm the download queue, perform the appropriate verification path above, and retry. Do not treat code 134 as proof that Rockstar’s entire service is offline; check the current service status if other online functions are also failing. If the status page is operational and verification completes normally, preserve the code and a screenshot for support instead of guessing at unrelated Windows changes.
4. Check the installation location after moving files
If the game was moved to another drive or its folder was renamed, confirm that the launcher and the store still point to the same installation. The current Rockstar Games Launcher release notes mention fixes for BattlEye errors after moving or deleting game installs, so update the launcher before attempting complicated path changes. A launcher that sees two partial installations can repeatedly request an update even when much of the game is already present.
Windows PC: fix BattlEye launch and connection errors
BattlEye is required to connect to official GTA Online on PC. A BattlEye warning can prevent Online from loading even when Story Mode starts normally. Treat this as an Online-specific branch: changing network settings will not enable a disabled anti-cheat component.

Enable BattlEye and remove custom launch settings
- Close GTA V.
- Open Rockstar Games Launcher and go to Settings.
- Find the BattlEye setting and make sure it is enabled.
- Check the launch options in Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam, or Epic. Remove custom arguments so the field is blank unless Rockstar specifically instructs you to use one.
- Start the game directly from Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam, or Epic. Do not use a desktop shortcut that adds parameters, a batch file, or a command prompt.
After changing the setting, launch once through the platform that owns the installation. If you use Steam or Epic to start the game, do not switch to a custom executable for the test; that can bypass the handoff BattlEye expects. If BattlEye was disabled, enabling it and launching through the supported platform is the least disruptive fix.

Remove known conflicts without deleting system files
Rockstar identifies ReShade and Special_K as known BattlEye conflicts and says some antivirus programs can interfere. Temporarily remove unauthorized modifications and close or uninstall conflicting graphics-modification software before testing. Where appropriate, add BattlEye to your antivirus exceptions using the antivirus product’s documented method. Make one change at a time and retest, so you know whether the conflict was responsible.
If an error names a Windows DLL as blocked, do not delete that DLL. Follow the instructions for the specific error, including any Windows update or system-file guidance Rockstar gives for that message. Deleting a shared system file can create a larger Windows problem and will not repair a BattlEye installation. Avoid paid “PC cleaner” or driver-updater utilities; they are not part of Rockstar’s supported BattlEye procedure.
Update the Rockstar Games Launcher itself
Rockstar Games Launcher version 1.0.109.3031 has release notes last updated October 2, 2026, with fixes dated September 3, 2026. The notes mention improved stability and performance, an Update Required screen, unexpected game-update errors, BattlEye errors after moving or deleting game installs, and an error when BattlEye installation is canceled.

PS5 and Xbox Series X|S: required files could not be downloaded
For the exact message “Files required to play GTA Online could not be downloaded from the Rockstar Games Service,” Rockstar describes a communication problem between its services and the connection’s IP address. This is a different starting point from a missing PC file. Check the live service status and your local connection before deleting the game. A successful Story Mode launch does not rule out this network or service communication issue.
Run the network checks in this order
- Check Rockstar’s current service-status page for an outage or maintenance notice. Status information is volatile, so check it at the time you are troubleshooting.
- Confirm that the console can reach other online services and that your home internet is working. If several devices are offline, resolve the household connection first.
- Fully quit GTA V, restart the console, and restart your router or modem.
- Try GTA Online again. If the same message appears, follow the cache procedure for your console below.
- Rockstar also lists manual DNS changes as an optional troubleshooting step. Treat DNS as a test, not a guaranteed cure, and record your original DNS values so you can restore them.
Do not change DNS, reinstall the game, and reset the console all at once. Those actions make the result difficult to interpret and add unnecessary disruption. The least costly sequence is a service check, a restart, cache clearing, and only then an optional DNS experiment.
Clear the PS5 cache
- Power the PS5 off completely; do not leave it in Rest Mode.
- Unplug the console’s power cable.
- Wait two minutes.
- Reconnect the cable, start the PS5, and test GTA Online.
Follow Rockstar’s current PS5 instructions if the console menu or recovery wording differs. A wired Ethernet connection is an optional diagnostic when you normally use Wi-Fi: if Online works over Ethernet, the wireless path deserves attention. Ethernet does not repair a corrupt PC update or a BattlEye configuration, and buying a cable is unnecessary unless you need it for this specific connection test.
Clear the Xbox Series X|S cache
- Turn the Xbox Series X|S off.
- Unplug its power cable.
- Wait two minutes.
- Reconnect the cable, start the Xbox, and launch GTA V.
Rockstar says temporary cached files can become corrupted and contribute to loading or connectivity problems. This procedure does not affect save data, but it resets brightness and language settings, so you may need to set those preferences again. It is not a factory reset and should not remove installed games or your saved progress.
When a disc or console hardware is the likely issue
Use the hardware branch only when the symptoms support it: repeated device-specific crashes, freezes, failed installations, or disc-read errors that persist after the software and network checks. Inspect the disc for visible damage and, where possible, test it in another compatible console. If testing points to the console rather than the disc or game installation, Rockstar’s older hardware guidance directs you to the appropriate Sony or Microsoft support channel.
A recent digital update followed by one Online error is not, by itself, evidence of a bad console or disc. Keep the hardware branch separate from the PC verification and console connectivity procedures. Do not pay for a repair or replace hardware until the error follows the console or the disc test provides evidence of a physical fault.

What to collect before contacting support
Escalation is more effective when support can reproduce the exact failure. Capture the full error text, code, a screenshot if possible, your platform and store, the update date or name, and whether Story Mode launches. Include the point at which the failure occurs: launcher, game boot, menu, or the transition into Online.
- On Windows, include
launcher.log. If the launcher itself will not start, Rockstar listsprelauncher.log. - Provide DXDiag and MSInfo reports when requested; they describe Windows and hardware conditions that a game log cannot.
- State whether file verification completed, whether BattlEye was enabled, and whether you removed custom launch arguments or known conflicting modifications.
- For consoles, note the service-status result, connection type (Wi-Fi or Ethernet), router restart, cache reset, and the exact console model.
- Say whether reinstalling was attempted and whether the message changed afterward. A changed error is useful evidence, not a reason to repeat the same reinstall.
Do not attach unrelated cleaner or driver-updater reports. Use the official support request form and follow its current upload instructions, since filenames and requested diagnostics can change. Keep the original logs unedited and make copies if you need to redact personal information from a screenshot.
