First find where the green frames begin: play the original video outside OBS, check the OBS preview or a local recording, and then check the YouTube playback. If the file is already green, investigate the file or its decoder; if only OBS is affected, test the OBS source; if only YouTube’s player is green, troubleshoot the browser and graphics driver. Change one setting at a time so each test tells you something.
Locate the first stage where the video turns green
Do not assume that green frames have one cause. Compare the same section of the video at each stage. This diagnostic approach follows the distinctions in the OBS Project Media Sources documentation and YouTube’s green-screen playback guidance; it is not a claim that one test is a guaranteed fix.

- Play the original file outside OBS. Use another media player if possible. If the same frames are green there, the issue is already present in the file or its playback/decoding path.
- Check the OBS preview. If the original looks normal but the OBS preview is green, focus on the OBS source and its decoding settings.
- Check a local OBS recording, if practical. Compare the same moment in the recording with the preview. This helps determine whether the problem is in OBS output or only in the live playback path.
- Check the YouTube result. If the original and OBS output look normal but YouTube playback is green, test YouTube in another browser or on another playback device.
Before changing settings, note your operating system, GPU and driver, OBS version, file container and codec, whether the video is HDR, and whether the corruption is continuous or intermittent. These details help narrow the cause if the basic tests do not resolve it.

Test OBS Media Source decoding and color range
If the video is clean outside OBS but green in the OBS preview or output, check the source type and its properties. OBS Media Source supports containers including .mp4, .ts, .mov, .flv, .mkv, .avi, .gif, and .webm. The Media Source hardware-decoding option is off by default, and its properties also include a YUV color-range setting. OBS documents these controls but does not state that changing either one will always fix green frames.

- Select the video’s Media Source in OBS and open its properties.
- Find Use hardware decoding when available. Compare playback with the option enabled and disabled. If it was already off, test it on; if it was on, test it off.
- Apply the change and replay the same affected section. Avoid changing other options at the same time.
- If the frames remain green, compare the source’s YUV color-range setting in a separate trial. Keep the setting that produces the correct picture; do not assume a range mismatch without a visible improvement in a controlled comparison.
If neither setting changes the result, restore the original configuration and continue with the other branches below rather than treating repeated toggling as a fix.
If the OBS source is VLC Video
This dependency check applies only when the source is OBS’s VLC Video, not the ordinary Media Source. OBS says VLC Video uses VLC libraries and requires VLC to be installed. For 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. After confirming the matching installation, reopen or recreate the VLC Video source and compare the affected section again.

If green appears only in YouTube playback
When the original file and OBS output look normal, follow YouTube’s player-side troubleshooting rather than changing OBS encoding settings first. YouTube recommends trying another browser, turning off browser hardware acceleration, and updating graphics drivers. Its listed hardware-acceleration steps are for Chrome; for another browser, use that browser’s own help instructions. For PC users, YouTube directs readers to the computer manufacturer’s driver site.

If it looks normal there, the problem is likely specific to the original browser or its playback configuration.
- In Chrome, turn off browser hardware acceleration using YouTube’s linked instructions, then restart the browser and check again.
- Check for an appropriate graphics-driver update using the computer manufacturer’s support site, as YouTube recommends for PC users.
These steps address green playback in YouTube’s player. They do not repair green frames already visible in the source file or OBS preview.

Investigate HDR only if the stream is intentionally HDR
Do not apply HDR settings as a general green-frame remedy. YouTube’s documented HDR streaming path uses HEVC and specifies a compatible hardware HEVC encoder, the Main 10 profile, HDR enabled, P010 (4:2:0), and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG. Use that configuration only when the source and system support the required HDR workflow and you intend to stream HDR. The full procedure is in YouTube’s HDR streaming instructions.
Check performance when green frames come with stuttering
If the stream also stutters, drops frames, or reports encoding overload, inspect OBS performance indicators and logs. OBS’s encoding-performance guidance treats encoding problems as workload issues and includes reducing frame rate among possible adjustments. The available guidance does not establish workload as the cause of green frames specifically, so use this branch when performance symptoms accompany the corruption.

Use a controlled troubleshooting order
- Identify the earliest point that shows corruption: original file, OBS preview or local output, or YouTube playback.
- For an OBS Media Source, compare hardware decoding on and off, then test YUV range separately.
- For VLC Video, verify the VLC installation matches OBS’s architecture.
- For YouTube-only playback, compare browsers, try the Chrome hardware-acceleration step where applicable, and check the manufacturer’s graphics-driver support.
- Check HDR configuration only for an intentional HDR stream, and performance settings only when stuttering or encoding overload is also present.
Keep a short record of each trial and its result. If the issue persists, share the operating system, GPU and driver, OBS version, container and codec, HDR status, source type, and the stage where the green frames first appear when seeking help.
