First check which number the sender texted. Messages sent to your Google Voice number live in Google Voice; they appear in Google Messages only if forwarding to your linked phone is enabled. Messages sent to your mobile carrier number follow the separate carrier-SMS path. Start with the Google Voice app to confirm whether the message arrived at all.
1. Check which number received the text
Ask the sender whether they used your Google Voice number or your regular mobile number. The destination determines where to troubleshoot:

- Google Voice number: Check the Voice app first. A new Voice text may also be forwarded to your default texting app.
- Mobile carrier number: Check Google Messages and your phone’s carrier connection.

- Open the Google Voice app.
- Tap Messages and look for the conversation.
- If it is missing, check the Spam folder.
If the message is in Voice but not Google Messages, the text reached your Voice account; check the forwarding setting next. If it is absent from Voice too, confirm the sender used the correct number and check Spam. Some websites, including banks and subscription services, do not send texts to Google Voice numbers. For those verification messages, you may need to provide your mobile carrier number instead.

3. Check forwarding to your linked phone
Google says new Voice texts can arrive in the default texting app when forwarding to a linked device number is enabled. In the Voice app, go to Menu > Settings > Forward messages to linked numbers and check whether your device number is selected. Menu wording can differ by app version.
If the device number is unchecked, Voice texts will not be forwarded there, but they remain available in Google Voice. Select the linked number if you want new Voice texts delivered to the phone’s default texting app, such as Google Messages.

4. If the text was sent to your mobile number, troubleshoot carrier SMS
Use Google’s checks for missing texts in Messages if the sender used your carrier number or ordinary carrier texts are also missing:

- Update Google Messages and make sure it is set as the default texting app.
- Check that the SIM is installed correctly.
- Confirm your carrier supports texting and that your plan or balance allows it.
- Check your signal and turn off airplane mode.
- If you recently used the number on an iPhone, deregister iMessage.

Google Voice texting availability depends on account type and geography. Google’s Voice help says paid Voice subscriptions have text messaging only in the US; its guidance also describes texting to US, Canadian, and Puerto Rican numbers subject to territorial exclusions. Inbound texts may be received from anywhere, although some service providers do not send messages to Voice numbers. If you recently ported a Voice number, texting may take three working days after the transfer is complete. These limits matter when Voice itself does not receive the message; they do not change the forwarding check when the message is already visible in Voice.

What the result tells you
- Text appears in Voice, not Messages: Check forwarding to the linked device number.
- Text appears in neither app, and it was sent to your Voice number: Verify the number, inspect Voice Spam, and check whether the sender can text Voice numbers.
- Carrier texts are missing too: Follow the Google Messages and carrier checks above.
