The fixes differ. For the desktop app, check the connection and exact error, then restart the app and computer before considering account reconnection or reinstalling. For a browser, check the network, browser settings, cache, and offline access. Before making changes to local folders or disconnecting your account, protect files that may exist only on your computer.
Start by identifying the kind of sync problem
If files in a computer folder are not matching My Drive, or Drive for desktop reports an error, troubleshoot the desktop app. If Drive will not load or shows “Trying to connect” in a browser, use the browser checks below. The two cases involve different settings and failure points.

| Where the problem appears | Focus first |
|---|---|
| Drive for desktop on Windows or macOS | App status and error, internet and network restrictions, account and Drive permissions, local file access, and streaming or mirroring mode. |
| Google Drive in a browser | Internet connection, supported browser and operating system, cookies and JavaScript, cache and cookies, offline access, and security or network software. |
Fix Drive for desktop in a safe order
Google lists connection checks, restarting Drive for desktop and the computer, reconnecting the account, and reinstalling the app among its basic troubleshooting steps. Work from the low-risk checks toward the more disruptive ones, and let the exact error guide you rather than repeating restarts when the underlying problem is storage, permission, or file state. Google Drive Help: Fix problems in Drive for desktop
- Check the connection. Confirm that other sites or services load. If you use a firewall, proxy, or managed network, check whether it may be blocking Drive. For a possible Google service disruption, check the Google Workspace Status Dashboard.
- Read the app’s exact error. Open the Drive for desktop notification or status window. Note which file or folder is affected and the message shown; different messages point to different causes.
- Restart the app, then the computer. Quit and reopen Drive for desktop. If that does not resolve the issue, restart the computer and check the app again.
- Check storage, access, and file state. Use the error and the affected file to determine whether Google Account storage is full, your account has permission to the Drive item, or the computer can read and write the local file. Also check whether the cloud original was deleted or unshared, or whether the local file was moved or deleted.
- Protect local copies before account changes. If edits are missing or local and cloud versions differ, save copies of both versions somewhere safe. Check the original parent folder and the app’s Lost and found folder for a local edited copy.
- Reconnect the account only after safeguarding files. Google warns that disconnecting an account deletes the Lost and found folder. Copy anything you need from it first. Find the folder through the app notification or Google’s help instructions for your operating system; do not delete or alter Drive application data at random.
- Reinstall only if simpler steps fail. Use Google’s official troubleshooting instructions for the current uninstall and reinstall steps, and first make sure local-only work is protected.
Match common errors to likely causes
- Storage full: Google Account storage is shared by Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos. Check account storage and free space if needed; Google also points to Google One as an option for getting more storage. Google Drive Help: Free up space in Google Drive
- Permission denied: Confirm that the account you are using still has access to the shared item and that the local operating-system account can read or write the file.
- File missing or moved: Check whether it was moved or deleted locally, or deleted or unshared in Drive. Look for an edited local copy in the original parent folder or Lost and found before assuming the changes are gone.
- Bandwidth limit or corrupt Google-file placeholder: Follow the specific guidance in the app’s error message and Google’s troubleshooting page; these are not fixed by changing unrelated folder locations.
- Conflicting edits: Preserve both copies before resolving the conflict. Do not overwrite one version until you have checked which contains the changes you need.
Avoid system-cleaner apps that alter Drive configuration data. Google specifically warns that tools such as CCleaner and Advanced SystemCare can cause errors or data loss.

Check streaming or mirroring before changing local folders
Drive for desktop can stream or mirror My Drive files. The mode determines where local file data lives, so confirm it before moving or deleting a folder. Streaming presents files through a virtual drive and stores file data in a local cache; mirroring keeps files in a selected local folder. Google Drive Help: Stream and mirror files with Drive for desktop
| Mode | Where files are kept | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Streaming | Files appear in a virtual drive; file data is stored in local cache. | Consider offline access and the cache. A virtual-drive location is not the same as a conventional mirrored folder. |
| Mirroring | Files are stored in the local folder you selected. | Consider local disk space and whether the folder contains copies that exist only on the computer. |
Changing modes can change file locations and trigger downloads or uploads. Before switching from mirroring to streaming, make sure local files have finished syncing before deleting the former mirrored folder. Switching to mirroring downloads cloud files into the selected folder, and files that exist only locally may upload. If local and cloud contents differ during a mode change, Google says it keeps both. Verify sync status and protect local-only files before moving or deleting anything. Fix Google Drive when it will not load in a browser
Browser access does not use the desktop app’s local sync folder. For slow loading or a “Trying to connect” message, work through these checks:
- Check your internet connection; if possible, try another network.
- Confirm that your browser and operating system are supported for Google Drive.
- Make sure cookies and JavaScript are enabled.
- Clear the browser cache and cookies, then reload Drive.
- If offline access is enabled, toggle it off and back on when appropriate.
- Check whether security software, an ad blocker, firewall, or proxy is preventing Drive from connecting.
Google’s browser troubleshooting guidance covers these checks and related connection problems. Google Drive Help: Fix problems with Google Drive

When to stop and preserve your files
Pause before disconnecting an account, changing sync mode, or moving a mirrored folder if you cannot tell whether the latest copy is local or in the cloud. Save separate copies of any versions with important edits, confirm access to shared originals, and check Lost and found before disconnecting. If an error remains, its exact text, the affected file, your operating system, and whether you use streaming or mirroring are the most useful details to include when seeking help.
