If it starts but misses your speech, wait for the listening tone, check microphone access and cabin noise, then verify any aftermarket receiver microphone. These checks help distinguish a wake-word problem from a microphone or availability issue.
First, identify where the failure happens
Try each activation method while parked and connected to Android Auto. Google documents three: say “Hey Google,” tap the microphone on the car display, or press and hold the steering-wheel voice command button. If using the button, hold it until you hear the tone, then speak; Google says the tone confirms Android Auto is listening. See Google’s Android Auto voice-command instructions.

- Only “Hey Google” fails: Check Voice Match and the “Hey Google” setting.
- The screen microphone or steering-wheel button also fails: Continue with microphone, permission, noise and hardware checks.
- Gemini hears you but misunderstands a command or cannot complete an action: Activation is working; focus on speaking after the tone and reducing noise, then check whether the issue is limited to a particular action.
- Gemini is not available at all: Check device, vehicle, language and regional eligibility.
If “Hey Google” does not wake Gemini
Wake-word activation in the car requires both Voice Match and “Hey Google” to be enabled. Google provides the setting check in its Gemini in Android Auto help and Android Auto voice-command help. Test with the display microphone or steering-wheel button as well: if either manual method works, the wake phrase is the part to investigate, rather than assuming the car microphone is broken.

If Gemini activates but does not hear your speech
Wait for the listening tone
Do not start speaking as soon as you tap the microphone or press the steering-wheel button. Wait until the tone, and keep the button held until it sounds. A press that ends too soon or speech that begins before Android Auto is listening can prevent reliable pickup. Google’s voice-command troubleshooting guidance also recommends reducing surrounding noise.

Check microphone privacy controls
Make sure microphone access has not been turned off in Android’s Quick Settings or device privacy controls. Android’s Privacy Dashboard can show microphone access and let you review app permissions; its appearance and available controls vary by device and Android version. Some documented controls apply only on Android 12 or newer. See Google’s Android privacy and microphone controls.
Allow microphone access for the Google app
Gemini on Android is hosted by the Google app, so its microphone access depends on that app’s permission. Open Android Settings, find Apps, select Google, open Permissions, and check Microphone. Menu names and paths can differ by device; use Settings search for “Google” or “Microphone” if needed. Google explains the permission relationship in its Gemini in Android Auto help.

Check the receiver microphone if the stereo is aftermarket
If your car uses an aftermarket receiver, check whether its microphone works properly. Google recommends asking the installer if you are unsure. Do not assume a replacement is needed based on Gemini alone: first establish that the receiver microphone is faulty, then confirm the correct compatible part with the receiver documentation or installer. See Google’s voice-command troubleshooting guidance.
If Gemini is unavailable in Android Auto
Google lists these requirements for Gemini in Android Auto: Android 11 or newer, at least 2 GB of RAM, Gemini selected as the digital assistant, and an Android Auto-compatible vehicle. Availability also varies by language and region, so meeting the device requirements does not guarantee that Gemini is available everywhere. Check Google’s current eligibility and setup information.

When the basic checks do not help
Google’s published voice troubleshooting guidance covers activation, listening conditions and receiver microphone checks, but does not establish a universal cache-clearing, reset, reinstall or rollback fix for Gemini problems in Android Auto. A Google Gemini Help Community thread titled “Android Auto not working with Gemini” describes one user reporting voice-command trouble after an update; that anecdote does not establish a general update bug or a proven remedy. Avoid treating community suggestions as official fixes.
If the problem persists, note which activation methods fail, whether the listening tone sounds, and whether other apps can use the relevant microphone. Those observations can help Google support or the vehicle installer narrow down whether the issue is wake-word activation, phone permissions or receiver hardware.
Use Gemini safely while troubleshooting
Park before changing settings or testing voice commands. Google warns that Gemini can present inaccurate information and should not be relied on for critical or safety-related matters while operating a vehicle. Read Google’s guidance for chatting with Gemini in your car.
