They have different requirements and troubleshooting paths: the Windows app needs a supported PC and an internet connection, while the web app also depends on a supported browser and an eligible Google Account. Use the checks below for the version that is failing; a browser fix may not resolve a desktop-app problem.
Google’s Windows-app guidance lists setup requirements and explains how to install an available update, but it does not give a symptom-by-symptom repair for every launch or response failure. The steps here separate confirmed checks from possible causes, so you can narrow down the issue without assuming that a particular message has only one explanation.

Start by identifying which Gemini you’re using
On a Windows PC, “Gemini” can mean Google’s installed app for Windows, Gemini opened in a browser, or Gemini in Chrome—a Chrome-specific feature. These are not interchangeable. If the installed app will not open, browser instructions alone do not diagnose that app. If a page at gemini.google.com will not load or let you sign in, check the browser and account instead.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Windows app: You launch Gemini as an installed app. Check the app’s PC requirements, internet connection, and any update notice.
- Web app: You visit gemini.google.com in a browser. Check that browser against Google’s supported list, then check account access.
- Gemini in Chrome: You’re troubleshooting the Chrome-specific feature, not necessarily the Windows app or the regular Gemini web app. Use the Chrome-specific checks below only for that feature.
Before changing anything, note what you did when the failure occurred. Did you click the installed app, use its Alt + Space shortcut, open gemini.google.com, or select Gemini in Chrome? Also note whether the problem happens before the sign-in screen, during sign-in, or after Gemini has opened. Those details help keep a launch problem, an account-access problem, and an unresponsive interface from being conflated.

If the Gemini Windows app won’t open
Confirm the PC meets the published requirements
Google lists these requirements for the Gemini app for Windows:
| Requirement | Google’s stated minimum |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 or later |
| Memory | 8 GB RAM or more |
| Available storage | 200 MB |
| Connection | Stable internet connection |
These are requirements for the Windows app, not general guarantees that the app will work in every configuration. If the PC falls short of one of them, address that requirement before treating the issue as an app fault. Meeting the listed minimums does not, by itself, establish why a particular launch failure is happening.
Check the machine you are actually using rather than relying on its age or model name. Confirm that it runs Windows 10 or later, that it has at least 8 GB of RAM, and that at least 200 MB of storage is available. The storage figure is available disk space, not the total size of the drive. These figures are minimum requirements Google lists for this app; they do not promise a particular speed or rule out other causes.
If the computer is managed by a workplace or school, keep that context in mind when describing the failure, but don’t assume that organization management is the cause of an app that does not open. The documented Windows-app requirements are a starting point, not a complete compatibility checklist for every PC setup.
Check the app’s update notice
If Gemini displays a notice that an update is available, Google’s instruction is to click Restart. That restarts Gemini and installs the update. If no update notice appears, this step does not establish that an update is pending.
Follow the notice in the app rather than repeatedly relaunching it and assuming an update is required. The documented instruction is specific: when the app says an update is available, select Restart to restart Gemini and install it. If the app cannot be opened far enough to display a notice, that instruction may not be available as a troubleshooting step; record what happens and continue with the other checks that fit your situation.
Check connection and quick access
The Windows app requires a stable internet connection, so confirm the PC is online before diagnosing a launch or response problem as account-related. Google documents Alt + Space as Gemini’s quick-access shortcut. If you normally use that shortcut, try opening Gemini from its app entry instead; this helps distinguish a shortcut issue from a problem launching the app itself.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsKeep the shortcut test narrow. If the app opens from its app entry but not when you press Alt + Space, you have learned that the two ways of opening it behave differently; that does not prove the app itself is fully working or establish why the shortcut failed. If neither route opens the app, note that distinction. Google documents the shortcut as a way to access the app, not as a repair command.

Likewise, confirming that the PC is online is a useful first check, not proof that every network-dependent part of Gemini is reachable. Google specifies a stable internet connection for the Windows app but does not document a set of connection tests or a particular network repair for this failure. Avoid treating a successful visit to another website as a guaranteed diagnosis of Gemini’s connection.
Separate “won’t open” from “opens but won’t load”
Describe the behavior precisely. An app that never appears is different from an app window that opens and then shows an error, and both differ from a window that appears but does not respond to input. The official Windows-app instructions identify requirements, the connection requirement, an update prompt, and the quick-access shortcut; they do not map each of these symptoms to a unique cause.
That distinction matters when you ask for help. If you see a message, copy its exact wording. If there is no message, say whether the window appears at all, whether it closes, and whether the problem starts before or after sign-in. Do not apply the web app’s explanation for “Something went wrong” to an unrelated app-launch failure.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Google’s Windows-app guidance gives setup requirements and update instructions, but it does not document a symptom-by-symptom repair procedure for every case where the app fails to open or respond. If the requirements are met, there is no update notice, and the connection is stable, note the exact error or behavior and use Google’s current support route rather than assuming a browser-only fix applies.
If Gemini won’t sign in
Check whether the Google Account is eligible
Google says Gemini sign-in supports a personal Google Account, a qualifying work account, or a school account whose administrator has enabled the service. A work or school address alone does not establish that Gemini access has been enabled. If you use an organization-managed account and access is missing, ask its administrator whether the service is available for your account.
Check which account is presented in the sign-in flow. A browser or app may be signed in with a different Google Account from the one you intended to use, especially if you have both personal and organization accounts. If the account shown is not the one you meant to use, identify that discrepancy before concluding that your intended account is ineligible. The key question is not merely whether you can sign in to Google generally, but whether the account you are using is among the account types Google supports for Gemini.
For a work account, Google’s description is “qualifying” work account; it does not mean that every workplace account automatically has access. For a school account, the administrator must have enabled the service. If you cannot confirm the setting yourself, ask the organization’s administrator to check availability for your account rather than repeatedly retrying the same sign-in flow.

For the web app, check browser support
Google lists Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Opera, and Edgium as supported browsers for the Gemini web app. If the page fails in another browser, retry in a listed browser before treating the issue as an account failure. Browser support for the web app should not be confused with requirements for the installed Windows app.
This is a web-app check: open gemini.google.com in one of the listed browser families and see whether the same access problem occurs. If you switch browsers, pay attention to which Google Account is signed in there; changing browsers can also change the account presented. A successful or unsuccessful test in the browser helps identify the route you are troubleshooting, but it does not establish why the separate Windows app behaves as it does.
Google’s supported-browser list does not mean that every browser-related symptom is caused by the browser, or that a browser check can repair an installed app. Keep a simple record of the browser used, whether you reached the sign-in page, and the exact message displayed. That makes it easier to separate a page-loading problem from an account eligibility issue.
Interpret “Something went wrong” carefully
Google says that if this message appears while trying to access or sign in to the Gemini web app, the account “can’t access the app at the moment.” Google identifies location, age, or account type as possible reasons and suggests trying again later. The message does not prove that any one of those is the cause, and this web-app explanation should not be treated as a diagnosis of every Windows-app failure.
In its Gemini Apps Help page, What you need to sign in to Gemini Apps, Google describes this as a current access limitation, not a definitive account of why the message appeared in an individual case. Try again later as Google suggests, and keep the route in view: the quoted explanation concerns access to the Gemini web app. If the same wording appears elsewhere, do not assume that the same explanation automatically applies to a desktop-app launch or to Gemini in Chrome.
Location, age, and account type are possible reasons listed by Google, not a checklist that reveals which one applies to you. For an organization-managed account, eligibility and administrator enablement remain relevant checks. If the message persists, record the account type, route, and wording; do not infer that changing hardware or installing optimization software will address an access restriction.
If Gemini opens but does not respond
For the Windows app
Start with the checks that apply to the installed app: verify the stable internet connection, confirm that the PC meets the stated requirements, and follow the Restart prompt if Gemini says an update is available. If Gemini opens but remains unresponsive and none of those checks identifies a problem, Google’s published Windows-app guidance does not establish a specific repair for that symptom. Record what happens and any displayed message so you can describe the failure accurately when seeking support.
When noting an unresponsive state, include whether the app opened normally, whether you could reach sign-in, and what you did immediately before it stopped responding. Also say whether the problem occurs every time or only on a particular attempt if you have observed that. These are observations, not proof of a cause, but they help distinguish an app response failure from an account rejection or a web-page issue.

If you have an update notice, use the documented Restart option. If you do not, don’t claim that an update is the cause simply because the app is unresponsive. Similarly, if you have only tested the web app, that result does not establish whether the installed app is working. Keep the notes tied to the version and the actual behavior you saw.
For Gemini in Chrome
Google’s Chrome guidance applies specifically to Gemini in Chrome. It recommends checking that Chrome is current, confirming supported language and organization settings, and reloading the Gemini interface. It also identifies VPN use and virtualized environments as conditions to consider. These checks are relevant to the Chrome feature; they are not established as fixes for the installed Windows app.
- Update Chrome: Check that the browser is current, then reopen the Gemini-in-Chrome interface.
- Check language and organization settings: Confirm that the language and any work or school organization settings meet Google’s requirements for the Chrome feature.
- Reload the Gemini interface: Reload the feature and see whether it responds.
- Consider the environment: If you use a VPN or a virtualized environment, test whether that environment is relevant to the problem. Google lists these as considerations, not as guaranteed causes.
Keep these steps in order and change only what is relevant to the Chrome feature. First establish that Chrome is current; then check the language and organization settings Google identifies; then reload the Gemini interface. If you use a VPN or a virtualized environment, note that fact and whether the behavior changes when you test in a different permitted setup. Google flags those environments for consideration, but does not say that every VPN or virtual machine causes the problem.

Do not transfer the Chrome-specific checklist wholesale to the Windows app. Updating Chrome is relevant to a Chrome feature, not evidence that the separate Windows application needs a browser update. Likewise, reloading a Chrome interface is not the same as following the Windows app’s update notice. The right step depends on the route you identified at the start.

| What you’re using | First checks | Account or environment considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Gemini app for Windows | Windows 10 or later, at least 8 GB RAM, 200 MB available storage, stable internet; click Restart if an update notice appears. | Sign-in eligibility still applies. Google’s published Windows-app guidance does not provide a repair flow for every launch or response failure. |
| Gemini web app | Use a browser Google lists as supported: Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Opera, or Edgium. | Personal, qualifying work, or administrator-enabled school account. A “Something went wrong” message may reflect current access limits related to location, age, or account type. |
| Gemini in Chrome | Check Chrome version, supported language and organization settings, and reload the interface. | Consider VPN or virtualized-environment restrictions. This is Chrome-feature guidance, not a Windows-app repair procedure. |
The most useful comparison is what each route depends on. The installed app has the published Windows, RAM, storage, and connection requirements. The web app depends on using a browser Google supports and an account that can access Gemini. Gemini in Chrome has its own browser-feature checks, including Chrome version, language and organization settings, reloading, and possible VPN or virtualized-environment restrictions. None of those routes should be treated as a substitute for the others.
For example, if the Windows app does not start but gemini.google.com works in a supported browser, you have confirmed that the web route is available; you have not found a documented repair for the app. If the web app displays an access message but the Windows app opens, that does not make the web message a diagnosis of the app. Record each route’s behavior separately rather than using one test to explain the other.
What to note if the checks don’t solve it
Before contacting support or an organization administrator, write down which Gemini route you used, the exact message shown, whether the problem occurs before or after sign-in, and which checks you have already tried. For a work or school account, include whether an administrator has confirmed that Gemini is enabled. This keeps a web-app access issue, an account eligibility question, and a Windows-app launch failure from being treated as the same problem.

A useful report can be brief but specific:
- Route: Windows app, gemini.google.com in a browser, or Gemini in Chrome.
- Stage: App does not appear, page does not load, sign-in is rejected, or an open interface stops responding.
- Message: Copy the exact wording, or say that no message appeared.
- Relevant checks: For the Windows app, list the OS version, RAM, available storage, connection check, and whether an update prompt appeared. For the web app, name the browser and account type. For Gemini in Chrome, note Chrome’s update status and the language, organization, VPN, or virtualized-environment checks you considered.
- Account context: Say whether you used a personal, work, or school account, and whether the school or workplace administrator confirmed access where applicable.
Google’s Windows-app page is titled Use the Gemini app for Windows; its Gemini Apps Help pages also cover computer access, sign-in requirements, and Gemini in Chrome. Those official instructions set out the requirements and checks described here, but do not establish a guaranteed fix for every failure. If your issue remains after the applicable checks, use Google’s current support route or ask the relevant organization administrator about managed-account access. Be clear about what you have observed and avoid presenting an unverified cause as certain.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the PC requirements for the Gemini app for Windows?
Google lists Windows 10 or later, at least 8 GB of RAM, 200 MB of available disk space, and a stable internet connection. These are requirements, not a guarantee that every PC configuration will work.
Can I use Gemini in a browser if the Windows app will not open?
You can try the web app at gemini.google.com in a browser Google supports: Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Opera, or Edgium. A working web app can help distinguish the route you are using, but it does not diagnose or repair the separate Windows app.
Why does Gemini say “Something went wrong” when I sign in?
For the Gemini web app, Google says the account may not be able to access it at that moment. Possible reasons include location, age, or account type, and Google suggests trying again later. The message alone does not establish which reason applies.
Can I use a work or school Google Account with Gemini?
Google supports qualifying work accounts and school accounts whose administrator has enabled Gemini. A work or school email address by itself does not confirm eligibility; ask your organization administrator if access is unclear.
What should I do if Gemini in Chrome is unresponsive?
For the Chrome-specific feature, check that Chrome is current, confirm the supported language and organization settings, and reload the Gemini interface. Consider whether a VPN or virtualized environment is relevant; Google lists these as considerations, not guaranteed causes.
Does Alt + Space fix Gemini if it will not open?
Alt + Space is Google’s documented quick-access shortcut for the Windows app, not a repair command. If the shortcut does not work, try launching Gemini from its app entry to see whether the two launch methods behave differently.
What if the Windows app still will not open after I meet the requirements?
Check for an update notice and use Restart if one appears, then confirm the connection and record the exact behavior or error. Google’s Windows-app guidance does not provide a specific repair for every launch failure, so use Google’s current support route with those details.
The Bottom Line
Match the fix to the Gemini route: check the Windows app’s stated PC requirements, stable connection, and any Restart update notice; check supported browsers and account eligibility for the web app; and use Chrome-specific checks only for Gemini in Chrome. If the documented checks do not explain the failure, record the exact symptom rather than assuming an unverified cause.
