Start with the least destructive checks: update the game, restart your system, disable mods and overlays, verify the installation, return GPU and CPU settings to stock, and test another save. If only Cyberpunk 2077 freezes, focus on files, mods, settings, drivers and saves. If several games freeze or the entire PC reboots, investigate system stability, temperatures, power, memory and hardware instead.
Identify the kind of freeze first
“Freezing” can describe several different failures. Matching the symptom to the right path avoids applying a driver fix to a damaged save, or reinstalling the game when the computer is actually unstable.

Check whether Cyberpunk 2077 is the only game affected
Try another demanding game and a less demanding one. Note whether the problem began after enabling ray tracing, path tracing, DLSS/FSR frame generation, a mod or a driver update.
- If only Cyberpunk freezes, prioritize its files, mods, configuration, launcher and saves.
- If several games freeze, investigate GPU drivers, temperatures, overclocking, power delivery, RAM, storage and Windows.
- If the whole computer reboots, treat it as a system-stability failure rather than proof that the game is solely responsible.
Quick, low-risk fixes
- Close Cyberpunk 2077 completely and restart the PC or console.
- Disconnect unnecessary USB devices temporarily.
- Close browsers, capture software, hardware monitors, RGB utilities and other launchers.
- Disable Discord, Steam, GOG Galaxy, Ubisoft Connect, Xbox Game Bar and NVIDIA or AMD recording overlays for a controlled test.
- Restore default graphics settings if the freezing began after a change.
- Load a different manual or autosave, then try a newly started game.
CD PROJEKT RED specifically recommends disabling overlays and unnecessary applications, including monitoring and security software, while diagnosing crashes. Temporarily test with antivirus or anti-malware interference ruled out; do not leave protection disabled. Restore it afterward, and add a game-folder exception only when the security product is demonstrably blocking the game. See the official crash guidance.

Test a completely vanilla installation
Disabling a mod in a launcher is not always enough. Legacy archive mods, loaders and third-party DLLs can remain in the installation and continue to load. Community mods are not reviewed or maintained by CD PROJEKT RED, and updates can make them incompatible; official limitations are described in the modding support documentation.
- Back up your saves and screenshots.
- Disable mods in your mod manager and REDlauncher where applicable.
- Temporarily remove or rename third-party loaders and framework files, following each mod’s documentation.
- Do not blindly delete the
archivefolder or the entire installation. - Verify the game files after removing third-party components.
- Launch without Vortex, REDmod content, ReShade, Cyber Engine Tweaks, RED4ext, ArchiveXL, TweakXL or other third-party components.
- Test before restoring mods one at a time.
REDmod-compatible mods normally use the Cyberpunk 2077mods folder, while older archive-based mods may use different locations. A genuine vanilla test is the fastest way to determine whether the installation, rather than the base game, is failing.
Verify the game files
Verification replaces missing or corrupted installation files and normally does not delete saves. It does not necessarily remove manually installed mods, altered configuration files or third-party loaders.

Labels can change between launcher versions. CD PROJEKT RED lists verification as a standard crash and launch step in its crash instructions.

Fix drivers and unstable hardware settings
Clean-install or roll back the GPU driver
Download the driver before removing the current one and create a Windows restore point. Use official packages:
For a thorough cleanup, CD PROJEKT RED points NVIDIA and Intel users to Display Driver Uninstaller and AMD users to the AMD Cleanup Utility. Use Safe Mode for DDU if following its full procedure. Do not use generic third-party driver-updater programs.
If freezing started immediately after a driver update, test the previous driver instead of assuming the newest one is best. CD PROJEKT RED explicitly includes rollback as a valid troubleshooting option.
Return performance settings to stock
- Remove GPU overclocks and undervolts.
- Remove CPU overclocks and custom power limits.
- Return aggressive fan or thermal profiles to default.
- If multiple games or applications also fail, temporarily disable XMP or EXPO as a diagnostic test. These memory profiles are technically overclocks, but they are not automatically unsafe.
CD PROJEKT RED warns that GPU and CPU overclocking or underclocking can cause crashes and may damage hardware.

Check temperatures, power and memory
Monitor CPU and GPU temperatures while reproducing the failure. Also check GPU power limits, SSD health and free space, and RAM stability. A temperature reading alone does not prove overheating caused the freeze. Reseat components only if you are comfortable doing so, and do not make a BIOS update the first response unless the hardware manufacturer identifies a stability issue.
Reduce graphics load as a diagnostic test
Use a temporary low-load profile rather than searching for one universal “best” setting:
- Disable Path Tracing/Overdrive and ray tracing.
- Disable frame generation.
- Lower texture quality when VRAM use is near the limit.
- Reduce crowd density on CPU-limited systems.
- Lower resolution or choose a less aggressive upscaling mode.
- Cap the frame rate below the monitor’s maximum refresh rate.
- Restore NVIDIA or AMD control-panel settings to their defaults.
- Try V-Sync if the failure appears tied to erratic frame pacing.
These changes can reduce load and power draw, but they cannot repair corrupted files, incompatible mods or a damaged save.
Repair launch dependencies
Visual C++ repair is most relevant when the game will not launch or freezes immediately, not for every in-game lockup. Download both Microsoft packages, run each installer as administrator and choose Repair or Install:

CD PROJEKT RED’s launch guidance is available at Game is not launching. Running the launcher as administrator can be a controlled launch test, not a general requirement.

Press Win + R, type winver, and press Enter. CD PROJEKT RED’s older crash page references Windows 10 version 1909; that is legacy guidance, not a recommendation to remain on that build. Use a currently supported 64-bit Windows release. The support portal also carries dated Windows end-of-support information, so check current Windows support status rather than treating the old number as timeless.
Update Cyberpunk 2077 through your launcher. CD PROJEKT RED’s support navigation listed Patch 2.31 on August 18, 2026, but availability can differ by platform and edition; rely on the version shown by your launcher and main menu.
When only one save or area freezes
- Try an earlier manual or autosave.
- Start a new game and test the same general activity.
- Check whether the failure occurs in one location, quest or scripted event.
- Back up the save folder and avoid overwriting your only working save.
- Preserve the affected save for support if the problem is reproducible.
On Windows, saves are normally stored at %userprofile%Saved GamesCD Projekt RedCyberpunk 2077. CD PROJEKT RED asks for the affected save folder when a performance problem is limited to a particular location; see its performance guidance.

PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S
PC procedures do not apply to consoles. Fully close the game, restart the console, install the latest game and system updates, and test another save. Confirm cloud saves are synchronized or locally backed up before reinstalling. If the console itself becomes unresponsive, use the platform manufacturer’s official power-cycle or safe-mode instructions. Do not use DDU, Visual C++ repair or REDmod cleanup on a console.
Clean reinstall only as a last resort
- Back up saves and preserve any affected save for support.
- Remove or rename mods and third-party loaders.
- Uninstall the game through the launcher.
- Follow the launcher or CD PROJEKT RED clean-install instructions before removing remaining folders; do not delete folders blindly.
- Reinstall and launch once with no mods or custom graphics settings.
- Restore mods only after the unmodified game is stable, adding them individually.
A reinstall may leave user configuration, launcher caches, drivers, corrupted saves or hardware instability untouched, so it is not a guaranteed fix.
Contact CD PROJEKT RED with useful evidence
Stop changing variables once the failure is reproducible and submit a complete report through the technical-support contact form. Include:
- Platform and launcher, game version and whether Phantom Liberty is installed.
- Whether the playthrough began before or after the 2.0 update.
- Mods, trainers, console commands, overlays and frame-generation settings.
- The exact failure point, error code and whether Windows also freezes or reboots.
- GPU, CPU, RAM, Windows and driver versions.
- A video, if possible, plus DxDiag, crash logs and benchmark results.
- The affected save folder when the issue is save- or location-specific.
After running Settings → Graphics → Run Benchmark, benchmark results are stored at %userprofile%DocumentsCD Projekt RedCyberpunk 2077benchmarkResults. Remove unrelated personal information from files before uploading them.
