If fingerprint unlock stopped working after you installed a screen protector on your Nothing Phone (4a), first clean and dry the display and your finger, then try registering your fingerprint again with the protector in place. Keep your PIN or pattern enabled: it is required to set up fingerprint unlock and gives you a way into the phone while you troubleshoot. If the sensor works only after you remove the protector, the protector may be interfering; compare with a replacement explicitly listed for the Phone (4a) and under-display fingerprint use.
Why a protector can affect fingerprint unlock
Nothing says the Phone (4a) supports fingerprint unlock, and its support category says the phone’s box includes a pre-applied screen protector. That does not establish that every additional protector will work with the reader, or identify a particular compatible replacement. Nothing’s cited Phone (4a) support material does not provide a model-specific fix for recognition problems after adding a protector.

A lifted edge, bubble, damaged area, or a privacy or matte layer over the sensor area is worth checking, but these are inspection points—not confirmed causes documented by Nothing for this model. A protector can also be the issue even if it looks intact.

Try these steps in order

Keep your PIN or pattern available
Unlock the phone with its PIN or pattern before changing fingerprint settings. Nothing’s setup instructions require a pattern or PIN before fingerprint or face unlock can be used. Do not disable this fallback screen lock while troubleshooting. The cited path for screen-lock settings is Settings > Security & privacy > Device unlock > Screen lock; labels can vary by software version.

Clean the sensor area and your finger
Wipe the display over the fingerprint-reading area and dry your finger, then try again. This is a basic troubleshooting check, not a Phone (4a)-specific procedure published by Nothing.

Inspect the protector
Look for bubbles, lifting, damage, or a privacy or matte finish over the reading area. If you find an obvious defect, follow the protector maker’s guidance rather than pressing hard on the display or attempting an improvised repair.

Delete and re-register the fingerprint
If recognition still fails, remove the saved fingerprint and enroll it again while the protector is installed. A Nothing Community discussion about Phone (3a) and Phone (3a) Pro users suggests re-registration after applying a protector, but that advice is anecdotal and not a verified Phone (4a) fix. Community participants also report that it may not resolve the problem.

Compare recognition with the protector removed
If practical, test fingerprint recognition after removing the new protector. This is a diagnostic comparison, not a recommendation to leave the display unprotected. Follow the accessory maker’s removal instructions and take care not to damage the screen.

Choose a replacement carefully, if needed
If the reader works without the protector but not with it installed, look for a listing that explicitly names Nothing Phone (4a) and explicitly claims compatibility with an under-display fingerprint sensor. Check that the product matches the exact phone model and review its material and thickness, whether it is clear, matte, or privacy-filtering, and the maker’s sensor-compatibility claim. A seller’s claim is not independent proof, and no particular replacement protector is established here as compatible.

Contact Nothing if the reader still fails
If fingerprint recognition also fails without the protector, or you cannot complete enrollment, ask Nothing support for device-specific diagnosis. Nothing’s US support page offers malfunction diagnostics and repair inquiries; support routes and availability may vary by region.

What to expect from re-registering
Re-registering is a reasonable test because it lets the phone capture the finger again with the protector already in place. It is not a guaranteed fix: the available community advice concerns other Nothing models, and registration may still fail if the protector interferes with recognition. If the protector-on and protector-off tests give different results, use that comparison to guide your next step rather than treating re-registration alone as proof of a phone fault.
