These are Steam Support’s general troubleshooting steps for Steam Deck software problems, alongside Square Enix’s advice to install game updates; neither guarantees a fix for a particular crash or performance issue. Steam’s Steam Deck troubleshooting guide and Square Enix’s update history provide the platform and game guidance.

If FINAL FANTASY XVI will not launch
Retry without optional changes
If you recently added launch options, mods, Decky plugins, or frame-generation tools, remove or disable those changes and try starting the unmodified game. This helps determine whether an optional modification is involved; it does not prove that a clean setup will resolve every launch failure.
Try a current Proton compatibility tool
For a Steam app with stability problems, Steam Support describes how to force a Steam Play compatibility tool and suggests trying the latest Proton. The exact current tool that works best with FINAL FANTASY XVI on a given Deck is not established by the available guidance. Follow Steam’s instructions in its Deck software and troubleshooting guide. Steam notes that selecting Proton can cause it to download the Windows version of an app if only a Linux version is installed.
One Reddit user reported that removing a frame-generation plugin improved a black-screen problem while using SteamOS stable 3.6 and Proton Experimental. That is an individual historical report, not a recommendation to install those versions or evidence of a general fix. The discussion is available on Reddit.
If the game launches but stutters
Enable the in-game shader compilation option

In FINAL FANTASY XVI, open System > Graphics.

Return to the title screen and allow the game to create its shader cache.

Square Enix says first-play shader-cache creation can cause stuttering and estimates that it may take 35–90 minutes depending on PC specifications. That estimate is publisher guidance for PCs generally, not a Steam Deck timing benchmark. Shader compilation may help with shader-related hitches, but it is not established as a cure for every kind of stutter. See Square Enix Support’s stuttering guidance.
Lower graphics load and test one change at a time
Steam Support recommends lowering the graphics preset or adjusting individual settings to reduce system load. Change one setting, then revisit the same scene before making another change; this makes it easier to see whether a setting affected the problem. Square Enix’s PC update 1.02 notes say graphical-fidelity settings were adjusted for performance and that selecting low or medium shadow quality also lowers cloud quality, which the publisher says should improve performance. These PC notes do not promise a particular result on Steam Deck. Steam Support’s guide and Square Enix’s update notes describe these recommendations and changes.

What the official updates address
Square Enix’s PC update notes document fixes and adjustments, but they do not say that every Deck crash or launch problem has been fixed.

Square Enix’s September 10, 2024 note about a stuttering fix was for the PC demo and said the fix would also be applied to the forthcoming release version. It is a historical demo note, distinct from the later full-game update notes. The official update history contains the dated notices.

Be cautious with mods and frame-generation plugins
Community reports about FFXVI modifications and frame-generation tools are mixed. One Reddit post describes an improved personal experience using a fix mod, Decky Framegen, and other upscaling or frame-generation settings on an LCD Deck. Replies describe problems including missing cutscene video, launch failures, and slowdowns. Those anecdotes are not controlled tests and do not establish that a particular mod or plugin is safe, maintained, or compatible across Decks. Treat them as optional experiments only if you are comfortable reversing changes and troubleshooting new problems. Read the community discussion.
Check the current compatibility listing, then narrow down the failure
Valve defines Verified as working great out of the box, Playable as potentially requiring manual adjustments, Unsupported as currently nonfunctional, and Unknown as not yet checked. The rating appears in the Steam library or store, and Valve says the review process is ongoing. The rating definitions alone do not establish FINAL FANTASY XVI’s live status, so check the game’s current listing. Valve’s compatibility page explains the categories.
If the basic steps do not help, record your SteamOS version, selected Proton tool, whether optional plugins or mods are installed, where the crash occurs, and whether the issue began after an update. Share those details with Steam or Square Enix Support if you need further help. The available sources do not establish a universal cause for FFXVI crashes or launch failures on Deck, a current known-good Proton version for this game, or a verified Deck-specific cure for shader stutter.
