An HTTP 403 from an FFmpeg–YouTube workflow does not point to one universal cause. First determine whether FFmpeg is publishing a live stream to YouTube, calling the YouTube Live API, or reading a YouTube video URL. Those are different workflows with different credentials and remedies. Before changing settings, save the exact command with secrets redacted and find the first failing log line.
First identify which operation returned 403
FFmpeg supports many protocols and input/output paths, so the word “YouTube” in a command is not enough to diagnose it. YouTube’s encoder instructions cover publishing a live stream; they do not explain every request FFmpeg might make to a YouTube watch page or API. [FFmpeg protocol documentation]

FFmpeg’s generic HTTP error alone may not show which step failed. Check the command’s input and output options, then use the first relevant error and nearby log context to identify the failing operation.

Capture evidence before editing the command
- Save the complete FFmpeg command, replacing the stream key, OAuth tokens, and other secrets with
[REDACTED]. - Record the FFmpeg version and build configuration shown by
ffmpeg -version. - Keep the complete first error line and the log lines immediately before and after it.
- Note whether the failure occurs while opening the input, authorizing an API request, or opening the live output.
- Record the destination hostname and whether the configured output uses RTMP or RTMPS. Do not post a real stream key publicly; YouTube treats it like a password.
If FFmpeg is publishing to YouTube Live
For a third-party encoder startup error, YouTube’s troubleshooting procedure is to obtain a new stream key in Live Control Room and update the encoder configuration. - Open YouTube Studio and Live Control Room. Select the stream you intend to use and copy its current stream URL and stream key from the encoder settings.
- Update the FFmpeg output configuration. Replace the old destination URL and key with the current values. If the failure began after a key change, make sure the running process and any VPS service configuration use the replacement key rather than a stale value.
- Restart FFmpeg and inspect the earliest output error. Avoid repeatedly changing codecs or bitrate before checking whether YouTube accepts the publishing credentials and destination.
- Keep the key private. Redact it from logs, shell-history examples, screenshots, service files shared for help, and public posts. If it has been exposed, replace it in Live Control Room and update the encoder again.

Verify channel permission and eligibility when the evidence points there
If the failing operation is a Live API request, inspect the structured error reason rather than treating every forbidden response as a bad stream key. The API documents insufficient-permission and live-streaming-not-enabled conditions. Check that the OAuth-authorized user has the required access to the channel and that live streaming is enabled. For a channel-level eligibility check, YouTube Help says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. This is an account requirement, not evidence that a particular VPS or FFmpeg build caused a 403. [YouTube live-streaming tips]

Check the RTMP or RTMPS destination and VPS network path
Compare the hostname and protocol in FFmpeg’s output URL with the current URL shown in Live Control Room. YouTube describes RTMPS as encrypted RTMP and provides separate guidance for RTMPS URL, port, SSL, and timeout problems. - Confirm the URL scheme and hostname. If the configuration is intended to use RTMPS, verify that it actually uses the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room and that the encoder supports RTMPS.
- For the SSL issues covered by YouTube’s guidance, check port 443. YouTube recommends port 443 for specified SSL errors. That is a targeted check, not proof that changing ports resolves every HTTP 403.
- Test outbound connectivity from the VPS. Check the VPS firewall, host-level egress rules, and any network policy for the destination and port your configuration uses. If YouTube’s dashboard and encoder diagnostics suggest a connection problem, test the outbound path independently.
- Do not presume the VPS provider is blocking YouTube. A VPS location or provider alone does not establish the cause. The available YouTube guidance recommends checking the outbound connection where appropriate but does not identify a particular provider as the source of this error.
Use Live Control Room health details for stream-format errors
If Live Control Room reports an encoder health or stream-format problem, use that specific diagnostic to review encoding. YouTube’s format guidance includes H.264 video, AAC audio, and keyframe recommendations. These settings matter when the dashboard reports a format issue; the cited guidance does not establish codec changes as a universal fix for HTTP 403. [YouTube live encoder settings]
- Check that the video and audio codecs meet YouTube’s listed format requirements.
- Compare bitrate and resolution with the stream settings and the encoder-health messages shown for that broadcast.
- Check keyframe interval against YouTube’s current recommendation in the linked guidance.
- Change one relevant setting at a time and observe whether the dashboard’s specific health warning changes. Do not use random bitrate or resolution changes as a substitute for resolving a permission or destination error.
If FFmpeg is reading a YouTube video URL
If the failing line appears while FFmpeg opens a YouTube watch/video URL as its input, stop applying live-publishing fixes: a new Live stream key addresses a different workflow. The official Live encoder and Live API documentation cited here does not establish why a particular video-fetch request received 403.

To narrow that case, preserve the exact input URL, the full command with secrets redacted, the first error and response details, FFmpeg version/build, and any separate downloader or integration involved. Without those details, the response does not support a reliable diagnosis or a claim that the VPS itself is responsible.
