First find out whether buffering is in the FFmpeg-to-YouTube feed or only in viewers’ playback. For an incoming-stream warning, check FFmpeg, YouTube Live Control Room, and your measured upload capacity; lower the stream bitrate if it leaves less than YouTube’s recommended 20% bandwidth headroom. If the encoder and incoming stream look healthy but viewers still buffer, investigate playback latency and viewer connections instead. YouTube cautions that lower latency can increase playback buffering. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance and latency guidance help distinguish these cases.
Identify where the buffering happens
“Buffering” can describe two different failures. YouTube Live Control Room may report trouble receiving your feed, or the incoming feed may look healthy while one or more viewers experience playback interruptions. Treat these as separate diagnoses: changing FFmpeg’s bitrate will not necessarily fix viewer-side playback, and changing viewer playback settings will not repair a weak encoder-to-YouTube connection.

- Incoming-stream problem: Check Live Control Room’s stream health and error messages alongside FFmpeg’s output. Warnings about keyframes or unstable ingest point toward the sending path.
- Viewer playback problem: If Live Control Room and the encoder appear healthy, consider playback latency and viewers’ network conditions. YouTube notes that lower latency leaves less time for the player to build a buffer and can mean more playback buffering.
Use YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting steps to compare stream health with what your encoder reports. Do not assume Airtel is at fault without evidence from your own connection at the time of the problem.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck the source and encoder before changing broadband settings
Rule out problems upstream of your internet connection. Check that the input is playing correctly, audio and video sources are stable, FFmpeg is not reporting errors, and the computer is not overloaded. YouTube recommends checking the encoder and CPU; when stream quality is poor, reviewing a local recording can help identify source or encoding problems.

- Look for FFmpeg errors or repeated reconnects near the time buffering began.
- Check CPU load and whether the chosen codec, frame rate, and resolution are sustainable on the machine.
- Confirm the source itself plays smoothly and that audio and video remain synchronized.
- Compare FFmpeg’s logs or preview with Live Control Room’s stream-health status and specific errors.
If YouTube reports that keyframes are not being sent often enough, inspect the encoder’s actual keyframe cadence before investigating the ISP. YouTube identifies infrequent keyframes as a possible cause of buffering. Its encoder troubleshooting guidance explains the relevant warnings.
Match FFmpeg’s bitrate to sustained upload capacity
Measure upload speed on the same network that carries the stream—not just download speed. YouTube says the total stream bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. A speed-test result is a snapshot, not a guarantee that the connection will sustain that rate throughout a live session; repeat the test during the period when the problem occurs if buffering is intermittent.

For example, a stream using 10 Mbps of total outbound bitrate needs more than 10 Mbps of available upload capacity to preserve YouTube’s recommended margin. Include audio bitrate and account for other traffic sharing the connection, such as household uploads or cloud backups. YouTube specifically cautions that download speeds are often higher than upload speeds. See YouTube’s bandwidth guidance.
These are YouTube’s recommended H.264 video ingest bitrates, not measurements of Airtel upload performance and not guarantees that your line can sustain them. The figures were checked against YouTube’s guidance on October 3, 2026. Leave headroom based on the total stream bitrate, including audio.

| Output resolution and frame rate | YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
If measured upload varies or cannot provide the recommended margin, lower resolution, frame rate, or video bitrate and test again. Choose a rate with room for normal fluctuations and competing network use, rather than one that merely matches a single speed-test result. The bitrate recommendations and 20% margin are from YouTube’s encoder guidance.
Verify FFmpeg’s keyframes, rate control, and option placement
YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval for live ingest, with keyframes no more than four seconds apart. Check the configured interval and, where possible, verify the output cadence rather than assuming the command produced the setting you intended. The recommended interval is especially relevant if Live Control Room flags keyframes.

- Use a supported ingest codec: YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1.
- Use CBR for rate control and set a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Keep the chosen frame rate at or below 60 fps and select a resolution/bitrate combination that fits measured upload capacity.
- Check that FFmpeg options appear before the output URL they configure.
FFmpeg options apply to the next input or output file and reset between files. A codec, bitrate, keyframe, or output-format option placed after the publishing URL may not configure that output as intended. Consult the FFmpeg command-line documentation and protocol documentation rather than copying a command without adapting it to your source, installed build, and YouTube endpoint.
YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure ingest. FFmpeg describes RTMP as multimedia streaming over TCP/IP and RTMPS as RTMP over a secure SSL connection. FFmpeg also documents RTMP options such as buffer duration and TCP keepalive, but the documentation does not show that changing these options will cure insufficient upload capacity, packet loss, or congestion. Treat them as diagnostic settings, not substitutes for a sound connection. See YouTube’s ingest recommendations and FFmpeg’s protocol reference.

Use a controlled test to isolate the cause
- Record the symptom. Note whether viewers report playback buffering or Live Control Room reports an incoming-stream problem. Capture the time and the exact warning.
- Check the source and machine. Review the input, FFmpeg errors, CPU load, and local output or recording before changing network settings.
- Measure outbound capacity. Run an upload test on the streaming connection and repeat it during the affected period if the issue comes and goes. Compare the result with the total stream bitrate and retain YouTube’s 20% margin.
- Reduce one variable. For a controlled test, lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate enough to create headroom. Test with representative audio and video, then monitor stream health in Live Control Room.
- Escalate with evidence. If the encoder remains healthy but outbound tests show a connection problem, contact Airtel with timestamps, upload results, and relevant errors. YouTube advises contacting the ISP when connection testing finds problems.
These steps diagnose your specific connection; they do not establish an Airtel-wide fault, the upload speed of a particular Airtel plan, or a current Airtel remedy. YouTube’s guidance is to test the outbound connection and contact the ISP if the test identifies a problem. See YouTube’s troubleshooting page.
When RTMPS or HLS is relevant
RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended secure ingest choice for a compatible encoder. HLS is an alternative for workflows or encoder/codec combinations that need it, including certain HDR configurations. YouTube says HLS uses HTTPS, TS segments, and a rolling playlist; because it sends video in segments, its latency is higher than RTMP. Switching to HLS is a compatibility or workflow decision, not a general fix for a weak or congested connection. Details are in YouTube’s live encoder guidance.
