If FFmpeg appears to change the order of songs in a 24/7 YouTube stream, check the exact concat-demuxer file that the running process reads. Its file directives set playback order. Then check whether a launcher, scheduled job, container entrypoint, or other script replaces that file, and whether you are editing the same path FFmpeg uses. If the entries stay in order but songs skip, overlap, or misbehave at transitions, investigate media compatibility and duration metadata instead: those problems can look like reordering.
First, confirm which playlist FFmpeg is using
This fix applies to FFmpeg’s local concat demuxer, commonly used with a command such as -f concat -i playlist.txt or with a valid .ffconcat script. It does not refer to a YouTube HLS Media Playlist, which is a different, ingest-side list of stream segments.

- Read the running command. Find the input immediately after
-i. Confirm whether it is the concat script you expect, rather than another file, generated list, or HLS playlist. Redact the YouTube stream key before sharing a command for help. - Inspect that exact file while the stream is active. The concat demuxer reads the listed files one after another; the order of its
filedirectives defines the sequence. Compare the file at the path FFmpeg opens with your intended sequence. - Check the process that creates or updates the list. Look in the launcher, scheduler, container entrypoint, or other list-generation code for steps that recreate or replace the input. If entries come from filenames or a directory listing, inspect the sorting and numbering rules. These are likely places to investigate, not a proven cause in any particular stream.
- Verify which copy you edited. A container, service, or wrapper may use a different path from the one you opened manually. Confirm the path in the running command and inspect that specific file from the environment where FFmpeg runs.
If the script on disk is correct but playback differs, establish whether the running process was started with that version of the list; do not assume an edit to a file means the active stream is using it. Capture the command and the list contents near an observed transition so the next checks have a reliable reference.
Validate concat script syntax and paths
A concat script is a text file with one directive per line. A minimal example is:

file '/media/03 - closing.mp4'The optional ffconcat version 1.0 signature must be exact and appear on the very first line, with no leading space or byte-order mark, for automatic format recognition. Paths with spaces or special characters need appropriate quoting or escaping. Check that each path names the intended file and that the lines appear in the intended order.
For a quick audit, make a copy of the runtime list and number its file entries in order. Compare that sequence with the sequence you expect to hear. If the contents change between checks, focus on the process that writes the file; if they remain stable, move on to the transition and media checks.

Distinguish reordering from transition artifacts
FFmpeg documents that the concat demuxer adjusts timestamps so each input follows the preceding one. Gaps can occur when streams have different lengths. The demuxer expects all inputs to have the same streams, codecs, and time base. An incorrect or missing duration can also affect timestamps and cause artifacts. A skip, pause, overlap, or buffering display therefore does not by itself prove that FFmpeg reordered the list.

- Confirm the sequence first: compare the active script’s
filedirectives with the observed song sequence. - Check every input’s compatibility: confirm the files have matching stream layouts, codecs, and time bases for the concat demuxer.
- Inspect duration information: look for missing or inaccurate durations, especially if the problem occurs at file boundaries.
- Separate audio and video symptoms: note whether the wrong song plays, a transition skips or overlaps, or the YouTube player only displays a buffer indicator. These observations point to different parts of the pipeline and should not be treated as interchangeable evidence.
Choose the right FFmpeg concatenation method
The concat demuxer and concat filter solve related but different needs. The demuxer is useful when avoiding re-encoding and the inputs already meet its compatibility requirements. FFmpeg’s FAQ recommends the concat filter when re-encoding is needed to make inputs consistent.

FFmpeg’s concat demuxer documentation describes the script format, ordering, compatibility expectations, timestamps, and duration behavior. Its FAQ on concatenating video files explains when to use the filter rather than the demuxer.
Troubleshoot the symptom you actually see
The songs play in a different order
- Inspect the exact input path in the active FFmpeg command and read that file’s
filedirectives. - If the file is being rebuilt, review the generator’s filename sorting, numbering, and update timing.
- Check for a second or stale list in the launch configuration, scheduler, or container setup.
The list is in order, but playback skips, overlaps, or has odd transitions
- Check that all inputs match in streams, codecs, and time base.
- Review duration metadata for missing or inaccurate values, since duration errors can affect timestamps.
- If the media needs conversion for consistent concatenation, consider the concat filter rather than assuming the demuxer has reordered entries.
YouTube shows a buffer indicator
A buffer icon is an observation, not proof of a playlist-order fault. First determine whether the audio sequence is actually wrong. If the input is HLS, check the HLS Media Playlist and segment sequence separately from a local concat file. YouTube’s HLS requirements should be checked against its current official documentation before applying operational changes; an HLS page could not be verified here.

If the problem persists, collect the FFmpeg version, command line with the stream key removed, exact concat script used at runtime, the mechanism that generates or updates it, and logs around a transition that demonstrates the issue. Those details help distinguish a changed list from timestamp or input-compatibility problems.
