Identify which connection is dropping

If an HTTP input is failing
FFmpeg documents HTTP protocol options such as reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_on_http_error, and reconnect_streamed in its HTTP protocol documentation. Depending on the option, these can allow retries before EOF, treat EOF as an error, retry certain network errors during connection, select HTTP status codes, or permit retries for streamed inputs.
These are HTTP protocol options. They do not establish that FFmpeg will reconnect an RTMP/RTMPS output to YouTube. Check the failing input’s protocol and the exact error before adding flags; an option for the wrong leg will not address the failure.

If FFmpeg’s output to YouTube is failing
FFmpeg documents a FIFO pseudo-muxer that can wrap an output format such as FLV and make recovery attempts. Its relevant controls include attempt_recovery, recovery_wait_time, recover_any_error, and max_recovery_attempts. See the FFmpeg formats and FIFO muxer documentation for the options and their exact behavior.
Evaluate FIFO recovery as an output-side strategy, not a guaranteed fix. The documentation does not establish that every RTMP/RTMPS interruption will resume transparently, preserve every packet, or continue at precisely the same point. Recovery behavior depends on the failure and the command configuration; compare FFmpeg’s logs with YouTube’s stream-health status to see what happened.

Check YouTube ingest and encoder settings
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP, for streaming to YouTube Live. Its encoder settings guidance also recommends constant bitrate (CBR), supports frame rates up to 60 fps, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Listed video codecs include H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1.

Test with representative gameplay and audio
YouTube advises testing before going live with audio and movement similar to the planned stream, then monitoring stream health during the event. A static test image may not reveal the same issues as a game with motion and active audio.
Check whether the network can sustain the stream
- Run an upload speed test. Compare the available connection with the bitrate you intend to send, allowing room for normal network variation rather than treating the measured peak as guaranteed capacity.
- Choose a quality the connection can support. If stream health reports connection or bitrate trouble, test at a lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate appropriate to your setup.
- Prefer a wired connection when practical. If the encoder is on Wi-Fi, Ethernet is a reasonable stability check. It is not a guaranteed FFmpeg or YouTube reconnect fix.
- Monitor both sides during a test stream. Keep FFmpeg’s logs open and watch YouTube’s Live Control Room stream-health information so you can correlate errors and warnings.
For a wired setup, a Cat6 Ethernet cable is one possible way to connect the encoder to the router. That is an optional network-path change, not a specific fix established for FFmpeg reconnect failures.
