First test the exact input path or URL from the same account and runtime that launches your stream; then check URL protocol support and whether the failure occurs only in the background. Capture the complete command and stderr before changing settings: the first useful error helps distinguish an input-opening problem from a later decoding, encoding, or streaming failure.
Start with the exact command and first error
Keep the input reference and its -i option in view. FFmpeg’s command-line structure is ffmpeg [global_options] {[input_file_options] -i input_url} ...; options that apply to an input go before that input. FFmpeg normally autodetects the input format, so do not add a format option as a guess. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation.
- Record the full command, including which
ffmpegexecutable runs it. - Save the complete stderr output, especially the first error referring to the input.
- Note whether the command works in an interactive shell but fails under a service, scheduled job, or container.
“Cannot open input” points you toward the input reference or access to it. An error after opening—during decoding, encoding, or writing the output—belongs to a different troubleshooting branch.
Check a local video path in the VPS runtime
A path that exists on your laptop is not automatically available on the VPS. Even a file present on the VPS may not be visible to a service or container in the same way it is to your shell.

- Check the spelling and whether the command uses the intended absolute path. Relative paths depend on the process’s working directory.
- Confirm the file is present in the environment that actually runs FFmpeg. For a container, check its mounts; for a service or job, check its working directory.
- Check that the same runtime user can read the file. Do not assume a permissions fault unless the error and runtime identity support that diagnosis.
- Run a minimal FFmpeg command against that exact input from the same account and environment. Leave out the stream output and unrelated encoding options while diagnosing input opening.
If the minimal test opens the file, add the rest of the stream command back in stages. If it does not, focus on the path, visibility, and read access before changing stream settings.
Check protocol support for URL inputs
If -i is followed by a URL, its scheme must be supported by the FFmpeg binary used by the VPS job. Support can differ between builds because protocols may be enabled or disabled at build time. Run this on the VPS with the same executable used for streaming:

ffmpeg -protocols
FFmpeg documents that this lists protocols available in its tools; see the protocol documentation.
- If the URL’s scheme is listed, continue by checking that the exact URL is reachable and usable from the job’s runtime. The title alone does not establish a cause such as authentication, firewall, routing, or provider restrictions.
- If the scheme is absent, use a build that supports the required protocol or provide the input through a path the installed build supports.
- If the URL works with another FFmpeg binary, compare the executable and build on the VPS rather than assuming both installations have the same capabilities.
Isolate input opening from background execution
Test the same input in the simplest invocation possible before restoring output, encoding, and streaming options. This helps separate an input-opening failure from a problem later in the pipeline; it does not presume a particular VPS setup.

If the command works interactively but fails only when launched in the background, check whether the process is trying to read from a console. FFmpeg’s FAQ documents -nostdin for disabling console interaction; on Unix-like systems, redirecting standard input to /dev/null is another option. For example:
ffmpeg -nostdin -i /absolute/path/to/video.mp4 ...
Use the real input and output arguments in place of the example. This addresses background console interaction, not a missing file or unsupported URL scheme. See the FFmpeg FAQ.

Check the VPS version before following option advice
Run ffmpeg -version to identify the binary and version used by the stream process. FFmpeg notes that its online documentation is regenerated nightly and corresponds to the newest revision; an installed VPS build may be older. When an option or protocol appears unavailable, check documentation that matches the installed version where possible. See the FFmpeg documentation page.
Troubleshoot by symptom
