What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Yes—sometimes. A low-cost VPS can keep a simple prerecorded video loop running on YouTube if it can sustain the stream’s outbound bitrate and handle the chosen encoding workload. That does not make every budget plan reliable for 24/7 use: transfer limits, CPU policies, maintenance, and recovery from faults all matter. A live camera feed or continuous re-encoding is a heavier and less predictable job than sending compatible, already-encoded video.
What determines whether a VPS can keep streaming?
There is no universal minimum VPS size for a continuous YouTube stream. The required resources depend on the media and what the server must do with it, while reliability also depends on the provider’s network and operating policies.
- Outbound capacity: The VPS must sustain the stream’s upload bitrate continuously. Leave capacity for variability; YouTube recommends testing the upload bitrate but does not prescribe a universal headroom factor.
- Transfer allowance: Continuous outbound traffic can use a substantial share of a monthly quota. Check the provider’s egress limits, traffic terms, and any overage charges.
- Encoding workload: Rendering or transcoding video continuously uses CPU. Sending compatible, already-encoded media without re-encoding may need substantially less compute, but the available evidence does not establish a minimum vCPU or RAM for a particular target.
- Operations and recovery: Someone must supervise the streaming process, respond to host maintenance or reboots, and handle failures that a process restart cannot fix.
Choose the stream workload before the server plan
Prerecorded loop
A simple loop of prerecorded video is the most plausible low-cost VPS use case. A 2026 Space-Node guide demonstrates using FFmpeg on a VPS to loop a file and send it to YouTube. It is a setup example, not an independent performance benchmark or proof that every low-cost plan will work.
Re-encoding or live video
Encoding a file continuously with FFmpeg’s libx264, as in the guide’s example, consumes CPU. A live camera or a stream that must be resized, converted, or otherwise encoded adds ongoing processing demands. Test the exact codec, resolution, frame rate, and content on the intended VPS plan; CPU and RAM figures alone cannot establish that it will run reliably.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Meet YouTube’s stream settings and network needs
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Its H.264 recommendations include these examples:
| Video format | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
These are YouTube encoder recommendations, not VPS hardware specifications. The server must be able to sustain the chosen bitrate over its outbound connection, and the provider’s transfer allowance must cover continuous operation. YouTube also transcodes incoming live video into formats for viewers, so the VPS does not need to create every viewer playback format.

Before committing to a plan, verify that it permits sustained CPU use and the expected traffic, and understand its transfer quota, reboot and maintenance behavior, and support arrangements. YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Check stream health while it is running as well as testing upload bitrate beforehand. Set up a VPS loop—and know what it does not guarantee
A typical do-it-yourself approach is to install FFmpeg on the VPS, configure it to loop a compatible media file, and send the output to YouTube using the channel’s stream key. A VPS provider’s 2026 guide illustrates this pattern, including an encoding example with libx264. Follow the provider’s instructions for its own environment and YouTube’s current encoder requirements; the example is not a universal command or a guarantee of performance on another plan.

Protect the stream key as a credential: do not publish it in a script, log, or screenshot. Configure a supervisor or service manager to detect a stopped FFmpeg process and restart it, and monitor the output rather than assuming that a running process means viewers can see a healthy stream.
Restart supervision can recover from some process failures, but it cannot guarantee uninterrupted playback. A public GitHub project account describes an intermittent packet/demuxer failure after several hours that local CPU, frame-count, and bitrate metrics did not reveal as a YouTube playback problem. That is an individual operational account, not a controlled reliability study; it illustrates why host metrics alone are not enough to verify viewer-side continuity.

Assess reliability and failure tolerance
A single VPS is one host and one streaming process. YouTube documents sending a redundant second copy to a backup ingest URL through its HLS workflow, but that is a separately configured architecture—not a feature built into an ordinary single-VPS setup. It adds complexity and is not evidence that a low-cost plan itself provides redundancy. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide.
Before relying on a VPS for a channel, test the complete setup under the intended workload and decide how you will detect a failed stream, restart a process, and respond if the host or connection is unavailable. A service that runs 24/7 is not necessarily a service that never interrupts.

VPS or managed cloud streaming?
The practical choice is not only about server price. Compare how much encoding and administration you are willing to take on, and whether the plan’s sustained network capacity and traffic allowance fit the stream. No universal low-cost VPS tier or quantified cost winner is established here.
| Option | Who handles encoding and operations? | What to evaluate |
|---|---|---|
| Low-cost VPS | You configure and supervise the streaming process; resource needs depend on whether media is copied through or encoded. | Sustained CPU policy, outbound capacity, transfer limits and overages, maintenance behavior, monitoring, and restart or recovery arrangements. |
| Managed cloud loop | The service runs the uploaded-video loop in the cloud; check the service’s supported destination, media limits, and plan terms. | Recurring service cost versus your administration burden, included storage, recovery behavior, and the quality and billing terms actually offered. |
Or let it run in the cloud
