Start with Settings > Battery before changing random settings or assuming the battery is defective. Check Battery suggestions and Insights, compare the daily-use chart with recent days, and inspect App and System Activity Usage. A new iPhone may still be completing device setup, and an iOS update can continue background work for a while. Once the Battery screen identifies the likely cause, change the setting that matches it.
Start with the Battery screen, not a battery percentage guess
There is no single percentage-per-hour rule that proves a new iPhone is faulty. Battery life depends on the model, signal conditions, display use, apps, software, and hardware features. Apple’s guidance does not publish one universal runtime or drain benchmark for ordinary use, so the most useful evidence is what your own iPhone reports.

- Open Settings and tap Battery.
- Read any Battery Suggestions or Insights shown above Daily Usage.
- Use the daily chart to compare current consumption with recent days.
- Scroll to App and System Activity Usage and identify which apps or system activities used the most power.
The Battery page may describe activity as Background Activity, No Mobile Coverage and Low Signal, or Notifications. These entries are clues about where power went; they are not, by themselves, proof of a defective battery. Menu names and the information displayed can vary by iPhone model, region, and iOS version, so follow the labels on your device.

| Ongoing Device Setup | The new iPhone is still performing setup-related background work. | Allow the process to finish, then check Battery again rather than judging the battery during this temporary phase. |
| Ongoing iOS Update | Post-update work is still running and can affect battery and temperature. | Wait for the activity to complete and reassess after several days. |
| Background Activity | An app performed work while it was not visibly open. | Reduce that app’s use or review its in-app and iOS settings. |
| No Mobile Coverage and Low Signal | The phone spent power maintaining or searching for a weak cellular connection. | Use Wi-Fi when available, move to a stronger-signal location, or use Airplane Mode where coverage will be absent for a while. |
| Notifications | Alerts repeatedly woke the iPhone or its display. | Turn off unnecessary alerts or reduce them for the app generating the activity. |
| A suggestion about brightness or Auto-Lock | The display is using more energy than the Battery system considers necessary. | Apply the suggested display change and monitor the next daily-use comparison. |
Look for the largest contributor first. A single app with unusually high background activity calls for a different fix than a day dominated by weak cellular coverage. Making unrelated changes before reading this evidence can hide the original cause and make the result difficult to judge.

Take a quick note of the top entry, the date shown in Daily Usage, and any Insight wording before you change anything. That gives you a simple before-and-after comparison. If the top entry changes from setup to an app or low signal on the next day, the Battery page is showing a changing circumstance rather than one fixed hardware fault.
Give a new iPhone time to finish setup
A newly activated iPhone can show Ongoing Device Setup in Battery Insights. Apple describes this as background work that can temporarily affect battery life and thermal performance. Battery life should return to normal after the activity finishes. During this period, a warm phone or faster-than-expected drain does not automatically indicate a battery failure.
Keep checking the Insight rather than repeatedly changing settings. When the message disappears, compare the daily-use chart with the recent days shown on the Battery page. This separates a one-time setup phase from a continuing drain pattern.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo not use the setup period to judge whether a particular app or network setting is efficient. Setup-related work can overlap with your normal use, so an app may appear high simply because the phone is doing several first-run tasks at once. Wait for the Insight to clear, then evaluate a normal day with the same app and signal conditions.
Allow an iOS update to settle before judging battery life
An update can also produce an Ongoing iOS Update Insight. The associated background work may temporarily increase power use and temperature. Apple Support’s guidance, published July 20, 2026, is: “If you notice that your battery life has decreased after updating your device, wait a few days and then check again.” Read the full guidance at Apple Support’s battery-drain article.
That advice is deliberately not a promise of a fixed number of hours. Wait until the update-related activity has finished, use the phone normally, and then compare the Battery chart again. If the update Insight is gone but one app, notifications, signal conditions, or display use still dominates the chart, address that specific contributor instead of treating the update as the permanent cause.
Avoid stacking several major changes immediately after an update. For example, turning on every power-saving option while an update is still settling makes it harder to tell whether the improvement came from completed update work or from a setting change. Let the Battery page show what remains after the temporary activity ends.
Fix background app activity and notification wake-ups
When one app has high background activity
In App and System Activity Usage, a large background-activity entry means the app consumed power while it was not on screen. First reduce how often you use that app or review its own refresh, sync, location, or media options. If the app offers a setting to fetch less often or perform work only when opened, that is the most targeted adjustment.

Do not disable every background feature simply because one app appears in the list. The useful question is whether the app’s activity is unusually large compared with the other entries and whether you need the app to perform that work continuously. Recheck the next daily chart after changing the app rather than relying on the battery percentage immediately after the change.
If several apps have similar background totals, look for the common circumstance instead of blaming the first app alphabetically. Compare the day with recent days, note whether the phone was on weak cellular service, and check whether an update or setup Insight was present. The Battery breakdown is most useful when you interpret the app entry together with the system activity around it.
When notifications are the prominent activity
Repeated alerts can wake the display and radios even when you are not actively using the phone. Open Settings > Notifications, select the app responsible, and turn off alerts you do not need or reduce the alert types that interrupt you. Keep notifications that are genuinely time-sensitive; the goal is to remove repeated, low-value wake-ups identified by the Battery page.
If notifications are not a major entry, changing them is unlikely to address the main drain. Use the activity breakdown to decide whether notifications, an app’s background work, or another system activity deserves attention first.
When display use is the issue
High brightness and a display that stays on too long can be significant contributors. If Battery Suggestions identifies brightness or Auto-Lock, follow that recommendation. You can review these controls in Settings > Display & Brightness. Lower brightness to a comfortable level and use an Auto-Lock interval that suits how you use the phone. The Battery suggestion is the evidence that this change is relevant; do not assume the display is the cause when the chart points elsewhere.
Brightness and Auto-Lock are separate clues. A bright screen can consume power during active use, while a long or disabled Auto-Lock interval can keep the display awake when you have stopped interacting. Apply the specific suggestion shown on your iPhone, then compare the next daily-use view rather than expecting an immediate diagnosis from a single percentage reading.
Reduce drain caused by weak cellular coverage
Apple recommends Wi-Fi when it is available because Wi-Fi uses less battery power than mobile networks. A strong Wi-Fi or cellular signal also uses less energy than a weak signal. In a basement, rural area, large building, or other low-coverage location, the iPhone can spend more power maintaining a connection or searching for service; Battery may label this No Mobile Coverage and Low Signal.
- Connect to a reliable Wi-Fi network when practical.
- If the Battery chart shows low-signal activity, test the phone in a location with stronger coverage before concluding that the battery itself is at fault.
- If you know you will be without coverage for a while, enable Airplane Mode. This prevents the phone from repeatedly searching for a cellular network during that period.
On supported 5G models, 5G Auto can reduce unnecessary 5G use. Apple describes it as switching to LTE when 5G does not provide a noticeably better experience. This applies to iPhone 12 models and later and to iPhone SE (3rd generation) with 5G. Open the cellular-data options on your iPhone and choose 5G Auto if that option is present; exact labels depend on the model, carrier, region, and iOS version. If 5G Auto is not offered, do not treat its absence as a fault.

Network conditions can change from room to room and from one day to the next. That is why the “No Mobile Coverage and Low Signal” entry is more useful than guessing from the phone’s model or carrier alone. A short comparison on reliable Wi-Fi can show whether the same apps consume noticeably less power when the radio is not working against a weak signal.
Use Low Power Mode as a targeted backup
Low Power Mode reduces power use by limiting or disabling some features, including background app refresh and some mail-fetching or visual activity. It is useful when you need extra time away from a charger or while you are investigating a drain, but it does not identify the cause and should not replace the Battery diagnosis.
Turn on Low Power Mode
- On an iPhone 15 or later, open Settings > Battery > Power Mode, then turn on Low Power Mode.
- On older models, open Settings > Battery and turn on Low Power Mode.
Apple’s current Power Modes guide notes that the path can vary by model and iOS version. Low Power Mode turns off automatically after the iPhone charges above 80 percent, so it is not a permanent explanation for a drain that returns during normal use. Details are in Apple’s Power Modes guide.

Understand Adaptive Power before enabling it
Adaptive Power is not available on every iPhone, and both its default state and behavior depend on the model and current iOS. Apple’s December 10, 2025 guidance lists it as on by default on iPhone 17 models and iPhone Air. It is listed as off by default on iPhone 16 models and iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.
| Model group in Apple’s guidance | Default state | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 17 models and iPhone Air | On by default | Confirm the setting and current iOS if the option appears differently on your device. |
| iPhone 16 models | Off by default | It may require manual activation where supported. |
| iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max | Off by default | Check model and iOS eligibility before looking for the control. |
| Other iPhone models | Not established by this guidance | Do not assume Adaptive Power is available; use the controls displayed under Battery. |
When enabled, Adaptive Power can make performance adjustments, slightly lower brightness, limit background activity, and turn on Low Power Mode at 20 percent. Apple says it needs at least seven days to learn charging habits before it engages. Therefore, turning it on and judging it after a single day will not test its intended behavior. Verify your model and iOS version, then look under the Battery or Power Mode controls for the Adaptive Power switch when it is supported. Apple’s explanation is available at Use Adaptive Power to extend the battery life of your iPhone.
Adaptive Power is an automatic assistance feature, not a replacement for finding a high-drain app or poor signal. Its eligibility, default state, and menu location can differ, so do not infer that a missing switch means the phone is malfunctioning. If you enable it, give it the full learning period Apple specifies before deciding whether its behavior helps.

Apple explains that capacity and battery life depend on the battery’s capacity and on how software and hardware features are used. A new phone can still show different real-world consumption depending on signal, display time, notifications, and app activity, so Battery Health should be read alongside the Battery activity breakdown.
What a Service message means
If Battery Health shows Service, Apple says to consider replacing the battery to restore full performance and capacity and to follow the on-screen instructions. For a newly purchased iPhone, treat this as a conditional service decision: the title alone is not a diagnosis. If the Service indicator appears, or if severe drain continues after setup or update work has ended and the Battery screen does not reveal a manageable cause, use Apple’s on-screen service instructions or contact an Apple or authorized service provider. Availability and terms of any service program depend on the device and region.
Do not buy a replacement part, battery case, or power bank as the first response to a new-phone drain. Those accessories can provide backup power, but they do not explain why the Battery page is reporting setup work, an app, weak coverage, notifications, or a Service indication. Diagnose first; pursue service only when the health message or persistent unexplained behavior supports it.
A repeatable check after each change
Use the same short process whenever the drain returns:
- Open Battery and read the current Insight or suggestion.
- Identify the largest App and System Activity Usage entry.
- Change only the setting that corresponds to that entry, such as notification controls for notification activity or Wi-Fi for low-signal activity.
- Use the phone normally and compare the next daily chart with recent days.
- If the dominant entry changes, reassess rather than repeating the previous fix.
This approach distinguishes a temporary setup or update phase from a repeatable usage pattern. It also prevents a common mistake: treating the latest percentage number as proof when the chart and activity labels point to a different cause.
Choose the fix that matches the evidence
When several entries appear, prioritize the one that is both largest and easiest to verify:
- Setup or update Insight: wait for the temporary activity to finish, then reassess.
- One dominant app: reduce its background work or usage and review its settings.
- Low signal: use Wi-Fi, move to stronger coverage, select 5G Auto when supported, or use Airplane Mode without coverage.
- Notifications: remove unnecessary alerts from the app generating repeated wake-ups.
- Brightness or Auto-Lock suggestion: apply the display change shown by Battery.
- No clear usage cause plus Service: follow the Battery Health service guidance.
After each material change, allow enough normal use for the daily chart to show a meaningful comparison. Avoid changing several unrelated controls at once: you may save power, but you will not know which cause the Battery screen actually identified.
When fast drain is normal—and when it merits escalation
Temporary drain and warmth are consistent with Apple’s descriptions when Battery Insights reports ongoing device setup or an ongoing iOS update. A decline immediately after an update should be checked again after a few days, as Apple Support advises. By contrast, a persistent pattern after those activities finish deserves closer attention to app activity, notifications, signal quality, display settings, and Battery Health.
Best Value
The most defensible escalation point is a Battery Health Service message or continuing severe drain that remains unexplained after the Battery page has been reviewed and the identified usage causes have been addressed. Use the model-specific Battery Health screen and the on-screen instructions rather than replacing parts or buying accessories based only on a percentage estimate.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my new iPhone battery draining so fast?
A new iPhone may still show Ongoing Device Setup, or a recent iOS update may still be doing background work. If neither appears, open Settings > Battery and check whether one app, weak cellular coverage, notifications, brightness, or Auto-Lock dominates App and System Activity Usage.
Is battery drain after iPhone setup normal?
Temporary drain and warmth can occur while Ongoing Device Setup is shown in Battery Insights. Allow that work to finish, then compare Daily Usage with recent days. The setup message is a temporary explanation, not proof of a defective battery.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →How long should I wait after an iOS update?
Apple Support says that if battery life decreases after an update, you should wait a few days and check again. There is no universal number of hours that applies to every iPhone or usage pattern.
Does Wi-Fi save more battery than cellular data?
Apple recommends using Wi-Fi when available because it uses less battery power than mobile networks. A strong Wi-Fi or cellular signal also uses less energy than a weak one. Battery may identify low coverage or a weak signal as a contributor.
What is 5G Auto, and should I use it?
On supported iPhone 12 models and later and iPhone SE (3rd generation) with 5G, 5G Auto can switch to LTE when 5G does not provide a noticeably better experience. Availability and labels depend on the model, carrier, region, and iOS version.
Does Low Power Mode fix the underlying battery problem?
Low Power Mode can reduce power use by limiting features such as background app refresh and some mail-fetching or visual activity. It is useful for preserving charge, but it does not identify the cause. Read the Battery activity breakdown before relying on it as a diagnosis.

Why can’t I find Adaptive Power?
Adaptive Power is not available on every iPhone, and its default state depends on model and iOS. Apple’s December 10, 2025 guidance lists it on by default for iPhone 17 models and iPhone Air, and off by default for iPhone 16 models and iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. Check the controls displayed on your device.
When should I contact Apple about a new iPhone battery?
Check Battery Health after setup or update work has finished and usage causes have been addressed. Apple says to consider battery replacement if Battery Health shows Service. Continuing severe, unexplained drain is also a reason to follow the on-screen service instructions or contact Apple or an authorized service provider.
The Bottom Line
Read Settings > Battery first. Let setup or update work finish, then match the largest activity label to a targeted fix for apps, notifications, display use, or network coverage. Use Low Power Mode for short-term savings, verify model-specific power features, and consider service only if Battery Health shows Service or severe drain remains unexplained.
