How to Fix “Failed to Install Mod” Map Errors in ARK: Survival Ascended

A practical, layer-by-layer guide to ASA mod-map failures, including deleted dependencies, 0% downloads, Steam verification, safe local resets, and host-side repairs.

“Failed to install mod” in ARK: Survival Ascended is usually a routing problem, not one universal bug. The cause may be a deleted server dependency, a blocked download, damaged local files, insufficient storage, or a server-side map-mod configuration. Check the required mod IDs and their availability first, then use ASA’s in-game installer before moving to file cleanup or host-side repairs.

What the error actually means

ASA has to complete several separate tasks before you can load a modded map: the server must advertise valid mod projects, your game must find those projects, the files must download, the local installation must be readable, and the server must load the same dependencies. A failure at any layer can produce wording such as “failed to install mod,” “failed to install mod map,” or a download that remains at 0%.

Failure layer Typical clue Who can fix it Best first action
Mod availability A required ID no longer resolves, or the project was deleted Server owner Check every required ID on CurseForge and remove or replace unavailable dependencies
Client installation One player cannot install a project that other servers or players use successfully Player Install from ASA’s Mods list, then verify the game files
Network path Download stops at 0%, times out, or reports an unreachable server Player, network administrator, or internet provider Remove VPN/proxy routing and retry on a stable connection
Server configuration Only one private server or map fails while other modded servers work Server owner or host Stop the server, reload the map mod using the host’s procedure, and restart

A useful diagnostic pattern appeared in an Official ARK forum case: a fresh installation with no mods worked, while a deleted CurseForge project (ID 941658) prevented the affected server from working. That case does not prove every installation error is caused by a deleted project, but it shows why availability should be checked before repeatedly reinstalling the client.

Run this quick triage before changing files

  1. Write down the server name and every required mod ID. Obtain the current list from the server owner rather than relying on an old screenshot or saved launcher entry.
  2. Test a known unmodded server. If an unmodded session loads, your base game and network are not necessarily perfect, but the evidence points toward a mod, the server’s list, or the route to that mod.
  3. Try a different modded server. If another server installs and loads its projects, the failing server’s dependency list or map configuration becomes the leading suspect.
  4. Note where the process stops. A missing project, a download fixed at 0%, an error after files finish, and a kick while joining represent different layers.
  5. Do not delete local data yet. Back up saves and configuration first. File deletion is reversible only if you have preserved what you need.

This triage separates a player-side problem from a server-side one without risking your existing setup.

1. Check whether every required mod still exists

Ask for the exact current IDs

Have the server administrator provide the IDs currently configured on the server. Search each ID on CurseForge. Check the project page rather than trusting only its display name, because names can change while IDs identify the dependency the server is requesting.

What an unavailable ID means

If an ID no longer resolves, the client cannot download it. Reinstalling ASA, verifying Steam files, or changing your graphics settings cannot retrieve a project that has been removed or made unavailable. The server owner must remove that dependency, substitute an available project, or restore the correct server configuration. Every player affected by that server will continue to fail until the list is corrected.

When the project exists but installation still fails

An available project shifts suspicion to the client, network path, or host configuration. Record the project page’s current ID and version information and continue with the supported in-game installation path.

2. Install ASA mods through the supported in-game path

CurseForge’s support guidance states: “ARK: Survival Ascended is not supported in the CurseForge app. Mods can be downloaded in-game.” Do not use the desktop CurseForge application as the ASA installer.

  1. Launch ARK: Survival Ascended.
  2. Open Mods list.

  5. Select the required project and click Install.
  6. Return to the mod controls and open Mod settings → Available mods.
  7. Select the installed project and confirm that it appears under Active mods.

Install only the projects the server actually requires unless the administrator tells you otherwise. Extra projects can consume storage, create version conflicts, and make it harder to identify the dependency that is failing.

3. Let the server browser install missing requirements

For a server that advertises its dependencies correctly, the browser can provide a simpler route:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the ASA server browser and select the modded server.
  2. Click Join.
  3. When the required-mods window appears, review the listed projects.
  4. Allow the game to install missing requirements, then wait for the download and installation to finish.
  5. Retry the join operation after installation completes.

If the required-mods window names an ID that cannot be found, stop troubleshooting the local installation and send that ID to the server owner. If the window never appears and the game fails immediately, use the manual Mods list path and compare the server’s list with your installed projects.

4. Confirm storage and the Windows baseline

Studio Wildcard’s 2023 Windows support table lists the following baseline:

Rank #3
Sale
Studio Wildcard ARK: Survival Ascended (PlayStation 5)
  • Ark graphics and worlds are completely recreated and designed to use the latest video game technology, Unreal Engine 5
  • Advanced new physical systems such as dynamic water and fully interactive physical leaves
  • Design your survivor, shape the trunk and tame, train, multiply and ride dinosaurs in a vivid ecosystem
  • Public online mode for up to 70 players, private multiplayer mode for up to 8 players + local split screen for 2 players
Component Listed baseline Why it matters for mod installation
Memory 16 GB minimum; 32 GB recommended Insufficient memory can cause instability while the game unpacks or loads large projects
Graphics API DirectX 12 The game must be able to start and render the installation and map-loading interfaces
Storage type SSD required Mod files are written and read during installation and map loading
Free space 70 GB available Downloads, unpacked files, updates, and temporary data need room to complete
Connection Broadband internet Required to retrieve projects and connect to modded servers

These are requirements, not a guarantee that any particular project will install. Check the drive that contains ASA, not merely the drive where Steam itself is installed. Leave additional headroom for updates and temporary extraction files; a drive that is technically above the listed minimum can still fail when the installer needs working space.

5. Verify Steam’s game files

Use verification after confirming that the requested projects exist and after checking storage. It can repair damaged or missing base-game files that interfere with the mod interface or file handling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Steam and go to your Library.
  2. Right-click ARK: Survival Ascended and choose Properties.
  3. Select Installed Files.
  4. Click Verify integrity of game files.
  5. Allow the scan and any replacement downloads to finish.
  6. Launch ASA and retry the in-game installation.

Studio Wildcard notes that some files may fail verification because they are local configuration files. A small number of such files can be normal and does not by itself prove that the verification failed.

6. Remove VPN and proxy blockers

Wildcard specifically advises players not to use a VPN or proxy when connecting to an ARK server because these routes can cause connection issues. Temporarily disable them, restart the game, and retry the download. If you are on a managed network, security filtering can have a similar effect; test on a different connection where possible.

  • Prefer a wired connection for the retry if one is available.
  • Pause other large downloads and game updates.
  • Restart the router or access point if several devices are losing connectivity.
  • Do not assume a 0% display means the installer is idle; allow a reasonable period for connection and file initialization before cancelling.

A 2026 community log recorded a serverUnreachable download failure, and one commenter attributed the incident to a VPN. That is anecdotal rather than a universal diagnosis, but it is consistent with Wildcard’s official warning and makes VPN removal a low-risk test.

7. Refresh local mod data only after the official checks

Community troubleshooting reports describe deleting ASA’s local Mods and ModsUserData directories, then verifying game files and reinstalling projects. This is not a Wildcard-published procedure, so treat it as a last-resort client reset rather than a routine fix.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prepare before deleting anything

  • Close ASA and Steam completely.
  • Back up single-player saves, settings, and any configuration you may need to restore.
  • Record the server’s required mod IDs and confirm that each project is still available.
  • Take note of your current active-mod order if the server administrator requires a specific sequence.

Reset and rebuild

  1. With the game closed, locate the ASA directories named Mods and ModsUserData in the game’s local data area.
  2. Move them to a temporary backup location instead of permanently deleting them.
  3. Start Steam and run Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files.
  4. Launch ASA and reinstall the required projects from Mods list → Browse mods.
  5. Activate them under Mod settings → Available mods and confirm they appear under Active mods.
  6. Join the server and check whether the map now loads.

If the reset changes nothing, restore the backed-up folders only if you need their contents and move the investigation to the server or network layer. Do not erase save files while attempting to clear mod data.

8. Fix a server-side map-mod failure

If several players fail on one private server while other servers work, the host should investigate its installation rather than asking every player to wipe local data. CurseForge directs server-mod problems to the relevant server host, and Nitrado’s guidance provides a host-side sequence.

  1. Stop the server.
  2. Reload the map mod according to the host’s installation instructions.
  3. Confirm that the server’s mod list contains valid, available IDs.
  4. Restart the server.
  5. Ask one player to test the join before announcing that the issue is resolved for everyone.

Contact host support if the reload fails or the server returns the same error. Include the server name, map, mod IDs, the time of the failure, and the relevant log excerpt. A host cannot repair a deleted project by repeatedly restarting the machine; the dependency list must be corrected.

9. Use the symptom to choose the next step

Symptom Most likely layer Next move Avoid
The server requests an ID that has no project page Availability/server list Send the ID to the administrator and wait for removal or replacement Repeated client reinstalls
Download remains at 0% Network path or initial file request Disable VPN/proxy, try wired internet, and test another server Deleting saves immediately
One project fails while others install Project-specific availability or corrupted local copy Check the project ID, then reinstall that project through ASA Changing unrelated graphics settings
Every mod fails after an update Client files, storage, or network Check free space, verify Steam files, and retry without VPN/proxy Assuming the server deleted every project
Only one private server fails for everyone Server configuration or host installation Have the host stop, reload the map mod, and restart Instructing all players to delete local folders
Unmodded servers work but this server does not Required mod list or map dependency Compare the failing server’s IDs with available projects Using the unmodded test as proof that your network is perfect

10. Gather evidence before escalating

The correct support destination depends on where installation fails. CurseForge’s support guidance sends in-game installation failures to Studio Wildcard’s support forum. Server-mod problems belong with Nitrado or the private-server host that operates the server.

Include concise, reproducible information:

  • Platform and operating system, such as Windows PC or console.
  • Server name, map, and whether it is official or privately hosted.
  • Every required mod ID, including the one that appears to fail.
  • The exact on-screen error text and the point at which it appears.
  • Whether an unmodded server loads and whether a different modded server works.
  • Available storage and whether ASA is installed on an SSD.
  • Whether Steam file verification reported replacements.
  • Whether a VPN or proxy was active.
  • The relevant log excerpt, with account details and unrelated personal information removed.

This evidence lets support distinguish an unavailable dependency from a blocked download and prevents a host from treating a server-side failure as a player-side reinstall problem.

Platform and responsibility limits

Windows PC

The storage, RAM, DirectX 12, SSD, Steam verification, and local-folder procedures above apply to the Windows PC path described by Wildcard and community reports. Folder names and locations can vary with your installation, so back up data before moving anything.

Console

Use the in-game Mods list and server-browser installation flow on console. Do not apply Windows folder-deletion or Steam verification instructions to a console. If a console player and PC player fail on the same private server, the shared server dependency is more suspicious than either platform’s local files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Server owner versus player

A player can install an available project, repair local files, change the network route, and provide logs. Only the server owner or host can correct the server’s dependency list or reload a map mod on the server. Knowing which side owns the failing layer is the fastest way to avoid destructive troubleshooting.

Prevent the error from returning

  • Keep a current list of the server’s required mod IDs and update it whenever the map or mod set changes.
  • Remove deleted or unavailable projects promptly instead of leaving stale IDs in the server configuration.
  • Tell players to install ASA projects in-game and to avoid unsupported desktop-app workflows.
  • Keep sufficient SSD space for downloads, extraction, updates, and temporary files.
  • When changing a server map mod, stop the server, reload it using the host’s documented process, restart it, and test with one client.
  • Record the exact error and log excerpt before clearing local data, so the original failure is not lost.

Bottom line: fix the layer that is failing

Start with the required mod IDs. A deleted or unavailable dependency is a server-list problem and cannot be repaired by reinstalling ASA. If the projects exist, install them through ASA’s Mods list or the server-browser prompt, check storage and the Windows baseline, verify Steam files, and remove VPN or proxy routing. Only then consider backing up and refreshing local mod directories. When one private server fails for multiple players, the host must reload the map mod and correct its configuration. Escalate with the IDs, exact error, platform, server details, and logs so support can act on evidence rather than guesswork.
