The reliable fix is exact synchronization. Your Factorio client and the server must use the same Factorio release, the same mod files and versions, the same enabled or disabled state, and compatible startup settings. In multiplayer, select Sync mods with server. For a local save, use Sync mods with save; hold Ctrl while selecting it when you need the versions recorded in that save rather than the newest releases. Restart Factorio or the server when prompted, then connect again.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Factorio servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
Factorio calculates mod checksums during the join process. A file that has the right name but was edited, renamed, or replaced can therefore fail just as surely as an obviously different version. The steps below show how to synchronize first, identify the exact difference when synchronization fails, and roll back safely without damaging the save.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat a Factorio mod mismatch actually means
A mismatch is not simply a warning that one player has a mod installed and another does not. The server compares the state it is running with the state on the joining computer. The official Factorio Wiki multiplayer documentation says that all game instances need exactly the same game versions and mods. Factorio calculates checksums for those files so that local changes cannot silently create a desynchronization.
Four dimensions have to agree:
| Dimension | What must match | Typical mismatch |
|---|---|---|
| Factorio release | The client and dedicated-server binary must report the same game version. | A server was updated while a player is still running an older release. |
| Mod files and versions | Every enabled mod must be the same version and have identical contents. | A mod was updated locally, manually edited, or copied from another installation. |
| Enabled state | The same mods must be enabled and the same optional mods disabled. | A player enabled an extra mod that the save or server does not use. |
| Startup settings | Settings that affect how the mod starts must agree with the save and server. | A client changed a startup option after the save was created. |
A save can preserve the mod state that was active when it was created. Consequently, the newest release shown in a mod manager is not automatically the correct release for that save. Treat the save’s recorded state as authoritative unless you deliberately migrate the server and save together.

Use the built-in synchronization first
Factorio provides two synchronization commands that avoid most manual comparison work. They download or select the versions expected by the server or save, enable the appropriate mods, and report when a restart is required.
Joining a multiplayer server
- Open the multiplayer browser or the server connection dialog.
- Start the connection attempt with the server selected.
- When Factorio offers Sync mods with server, accept it.
- Allow the download and enable process to finish. Do not launch another copy of Factorio or change mod settings during the operation.
- If the game asks to restart, restart it before trying to join again.
- Reconnect after the restart. Every player who receives the mismatch should perform the same synchronization after the server’s mod state changes.
This process obtains the exact mod versions the server advertises; it is not merely an instruction to install whatever version currently appears as latest. If the server was changed while you were away, repeat the synchronization so your local installation is rebuilt from the current server state.

- Choose Load game and select the save you intend to open.
- Use Sync mods with save.
- For the normal action, Factorio uses the latest available versions of the required mods.
- To select the exact versions stored by the save, hold Ctrl while clicking Sync mods with save.
- Accept any restart request, then load the save again.
The Ctrl-click distinction matters when a mod has released a newer version since the save was created. Using the latest release can produce a different mod state even though the mod name is unchanged; selecting the save-recorded versions preserves the state that the save expects.
Check the Factorio release before comparing mods
Do this check before replacing individual mod files. Read the version displayed by the normal Factorio client and the version reported by the dedicated-server binary. If they differ, update or roll back one side so both use the same release. A perfect mod list cannot compensate for a game-version difference.
- Check the client on the main menu or connection screen.
- Check the executable or startup output used by the dedicated server.
- Confirm that all players connecting to the same server are on that release.
- After changing the game release, repeat mod synchronization; a release change can alter which mod versions are valid.
Do not assume that a server’s displayed name or save filename identifies its release. Verify the running binary and the client independently.
Compare the complete mod state when sync does not solve it
If the built-in action completes but the join still fails, make a written comparison instead of repeatedly clicking reconnect. Record the server’s complete mod list and compare it with the client’s list item by item.

|---|---|---|---|
| Filename or internal mod name | Record every enabled and disabled entry. | Check for spelling, renamed files, and duplicate-looking copies. | Use the server’s identity; remove or rename the local outlier, then synchronize. |
| Version | Note the version running in the server process. | Note the installed version, not just the newest version offered. | Install the server’s version or use the save synchronization control. |
| File contents | The server’s checksum represents its actual archive contents. | A same-named archive may have been edited or repacked. | Replace the local archive with an unmodified copy obtained through synchronization. |
| Enabled state | Include disabled entries if the server records them. | Check the enabled and disabled switches. | Match the server exactly before joining. |
| Dependencies | Record required companion mods and their versions. | Look for a missing, older, or newer dependency. | Synchronize the dependency set as a group; do not update only one member. |
| Startup settings | Use the values associated with the running save. | Compare each startup option that the mod exposes. | Restore the save or server values, then restart as requested. |
Pay special attention to mods that were manually copied, edited, renamed, or updated shortly before the error appeared. The checksum check is based on contents, so a modified archive can fail even when its filename and version label look correct.
Dedicated-server command-line synchronization
A server launched from a shell must be associated with the intended save and the intended mod state. The official command-line reference documents --sync-mods for synchronizing mods with a save and --start-server for launching a multiplayer server.

Synchronize the save’s mods
Run the server executable with --sync-mods and the save you want to use, following the syntax documented for your Factorio installation. This updates the server’s mod set to the versions recorded for that save. Stop the running server before performing the operation, then start it again with the same save.
Start the intended save
Use --start-server with the save path specified by your server configuration. If the command starts a different save than the one you inspected, the server can advertise a completely different mod state and every comparison will be misleading. Confirm the save path in the startup command and in the server’s launch output.
After a command-line synchronization, have each player accept Sync mods with server. A server-side change is not complete until clients have rebuilt their local mod state.
Failure branches and precise fixes
The client and server run different Factorio releases
Update or roll back the out-of-date side so the release identifiers are identical. Restart the affected program, then synchronize mods again. Do not troubleshoot individual mods while this difference remains; it invalidates the rest of the comparison.
The mod name matches but the checksum does not
Replace the local file rather than merely changing its displayed version. This situation is consistent with a manually edited archive, a repackaged download, or a file copied from a different installation. Remove the suspect local copy and use the server synchronization flow to obtain a clean copy. If the server’s copy was edited intentionally, restore an unmodified, shared copy on the server and repeat synchronization for all players.
A startup setting differs
Compare startup settings saved with the game and the values used by the server. Restore the server or save values on the client, restart if Factorio requests it, and reconnect. Changing a setting on only one computer can leave the files apparently identical while the startup state still differs.
A mod was recently added or updated
Use the official isolation method: remove a newly added mod or roll back a recently updated mod, restart the server, and test the connection. Change one item at a time and record the result. If the mismatch disappears, the last change identifies the likely offending mod or version. Reapply other changes only after a known-good connection is established.
The server is loading a different save
Check the save path in the command that starts the server. A save encodes its own mod state, so loading another save can make a previously correct client appear wrong. Start the intended save with --start-server, then run --sync-mods for that same save if needed.

Dependencies do not line up
Do not fix only the top-level mod. Compare every required dependency and its version, including dependencies that are disabled or supplied automatically by the synchronization process. Bring the complete dependency chain to the server’s state, restart, and have clients synchronize again.
A controlled rollback procedure
When repeated synchronization does not identify the difference, use this isolation loop. It preserves a clear record and avoids changing several variables at once.
- Stop changes. Ask players not to update, enable, disable, rename, or edit mods while you investigate.
- Back up the save and server mod directory. Keep the backup outside the directory being modified so a rollback can restore the prior state.
- Record the baseline. Write down the Factorio release, save filename, complete server mod list, versions, enabled state, dependencies, and startup settings.
- Identify the last known change. Start with mods added or updated immediately before the first mismatch.
- Remove one newly added mod or restore one recently updated mod. Do not change several entries in the same test.
- Restart the server. The official desynchronization guidance includes a server restart in this isolation loop.
- Synchronize a test client. Accept Sync mods with server and retry the join.
- Record the result. If the error remains, restore the tested item and move to the next candidate. If it disappears, keep that rollback and test the remaining changes one at a time.
- Rebuild the final state. Once the offending version or mod is known, document the compatible version and synchronize every client before reopening the server to the group.
This approach distinguishes a bad mod update from a client-only file problem. It also gives you a reproducible change history instead of an unexplained collection of replacements.
Choosing between common fixes
When more than one remedy appears possible, evaluate it against the same four questions: does it restore exact version and checksum equality, does it preserve the save’s recorded state, does it require a restart or rollback, and does it identify one offending mod for future maintenance?
| Fix | Best use | Save-state preservation | Restart or rollback | Does it isolate a culprit? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sync mods with server | A client cannot join an active multiplayer server. | Matches the server’s current state; it may differ from an older save if the server was changed. | Restart if prompted. | Usually no; it corrects the set as a whole. |
| Ctrl-click Sync mods with save | A local save or server must use its recorded mod versions. | Yes, it selects the versions stored by the save. | Restart if prompted. | No; it restores the recorded set. |
| Manual list comparison | Synchronization completes but the mismatch persists. | Depends on which recorded state you choose. | Often followed by a restart. | Can reveal the exact filename, version, setting, or dependency difference. |
| Rollback and restart | A new or updated mod is the likely trigger. | Preserves the last known-good state when done against a backup. | Yes; rollback and server restart are required. | Yes, when changes are tested one at a time. |
--sync-mods with the intended save |
A command-line server needs the save’s mod set. | Yes, for the save supplied to the command. | Stop and restart the server. | Only if followed by comparison or controlled rollback. |
Prevent the next mismatch
Once the server is working, make the known-good state easy to reproduce. Keep a simple maintenance record containing the Factorio release, save filename, mod filenames and versions, enabled state, dependencies, and startup settings. That record lets you distinguish an intentional update from an accidental local change.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Have every player synchronize after any server-side mod change.
- Update the server and clients as one change, not in separate untracked sessions.
- Before opening an older save, use Ctrl-click on Sync mods with save so the save’s recorded versions are selected.
- Do not edit or rename mod archives on one computer and expect checksum equality elsewhere.
- Keep a backup before adding or updating a mod.
- When a mismatch appears after an update, record the change and roll back one candidate at a time rather than replacing the whole collection blindly.
- For command-line servers, keep the
--start-serversave path and any--sync-modsoperation tied to the same documented save.
When to stop troubleshooting and restore a known-good state
If you cannot prove which state the server should use, restore the backup of the save and its mod set, start that save, and synchronize one client. A known-good baseline is more useful than continuing to layer updates onto an uncertain installation. Once one client joins successfully, bring additional players in through synchronization and investigate any remaining outlier individually.
Remember that a successful download does not prove that the right save was loaded or that startup settings match. Verify the Factorio release, save identity, complete mod state, and settings together before declaring the problem fixed.
