Error 0x80040266 means that a DirectShow filter graph could not connect two pins because they require different transport interfaces. Microsoft names this condition VFW_E_NO_TRANSPORT, not a general Windows failure. It usually appears when an older media application cannot combine a file source, splitter, decoder or renderer with the interfaces expected by another filter.
Work through the file and codec checks first, then update or repair the player, use only a trusted codec source when necessary, and move to a modern Media Foundation-based player if the application still depends on incompatible DirectShow components. The exact fix depends on the program, file container, codec and filters involved.

What error 0x80040266 means
The hexadecimal code 0x80040266 is Microsoft DirectShow’s VFW_E_NO_TRANSPORT. Its documented meaning is: “Pins cannot connect because they don’t support the same transport.” In a DirectShow graph, media moves through connected filters. A source filter reads the file, a splitter separates streams, a decoder turns compressed data into audio or video, and a renderer sends the result to the screen or speakers. Each connection is made through pins.
A pin is not simply a cable. It exposes one or more interfaces that describe how data will be delivered. Microsoft’s example contrasts an upstream filter that requires IAsyncReader with a downstream filter that requires IMemInputPin. If no compatible transport is available, the graph cannot be built and playback stops with 0x80040266.

Why the same code can have different causes
The HRESULT identifies the failed connection, but it does not identify the two filters that disagreed. The conflict might be in a file source, a container splitter, a codec, a renderer or a third-party filter inserted by the application. That is why a repair that works for one file may not help another, and why there is no single Microsoft reset command that guarantees a fix for every occurrence.
DirectShow is a legacy path
Microsoft describes DirectShow as a legacy feature. For Windows 10 and Windows 11, Microsoft points developers toward MediaPlayer, IMFMediaEngine and Media Foundation audio/video capture APIs. An application that still constructs DirectShow graphs can continue to work, but its filter and codec assumptions may not match newer Windows releases.
First, capture the circumstances
Before changing codecs or reinstalling software, write down exactly when the error occurs. This prevents you from replacing a working component without learning which combination fails.
- Record the application. Note the player or program name and its version. Include whether it is the current Windows Media Player/Media Player application, an older desktop player, an editor, a camera utility or another program.
- Record the Windows release. Open Settings > System > About and note whether the PC is running Windows 10 or Windows 11, including the version shown under Windows specifications. Windows 11 version 24H2 has a codec-availability change that matters later in this guide.
- Record the file. Note the file extension, container (such as MP4, AVI, MKV or another format if you know it), where it came from and whether it was recently copied, downloaded or converted.
- Separate one-file failures from system-wide failures. Test a known-good video or audio file that previously played on the same computer. If only one file fails, corruption, an unusual stream or an unsupported codec is more likely. If every file fails, the player, a shared codec or a filter registration problem deserves more attention.
- Write down what changed. Include a recent Windows update, player update, codec installation, graphics or audio change, file conversion or migration from another PC. Do not uninstall components yet; this timeline is useful if you need vendor support.
Check the file and codec details
Inspect properties in Windows Media Player
When Windows Media Player can open the file far enough to display its information, open the file’s Properties and Details information. Look for the container, video and audio codecs, dimensions, frame rate, audio format and channel information. A missing or unsupported codec can prevent playback even though the file extension looks familiar.

Compare the failing file with a known-good file. For example, two files may both end in .mp4 while using different video or audio codecs. The container name alone does not prove that Windows has the required decoders. Keep the comparison factual: identify which stream differs instead of assuming that every MP4, AVI or MKV file is equivalent.
Check whether the file itself is damaged
- Copy the file to a local folder if it is on a network share, removable drive or cloud placeholder, then test the local copy.
- Check that the file size is plausible and that copying it again produces the same size. An incomplete transfer can fail before a codec is even selected.
- Test another file created by the same device or service. If all files from one source fail while unrelated files work, the source’s encoding settings or transfer process may be the common factor.
Do not rename the extension as a “fix.” Renaming changes the label, not the streams inside the container, so it cannot make incompatible pins support the same transport.
Update or repair the playback application
An outdated player may select filters differently from a current release, and a damaged installation may fail while building a graph. Apply the application’s own update first. If Windows exposes a repair action, use it before removing the application.

- Install the player’s current update from its official distribution channel. If it came from Microsoft Store, check the Store’s library for updates; if it is a desktop program, use its built-in update command or the vendor’s official installer.
- On Windows 11, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the application, open Advanced options when available, and choose Repair. On Windows 10, the equivalent path is generally Settings > Apps > Apps & features, followed by the application’s advanced options. Labels vary by application; use Reset only after Repair and only if you are prepared to lose that app’s local settings.
- Restart Windows, then test the same known-good file and the file that originally failed.
- If only one format still fails, compare its codec and container with the format Windows plays natively. A player update cannot decode a stream for which no compatible codec is installed.
If the error began immediately after adding a third-party filter or codec, use that product’s documented uninstall or disable option and retest. Avoid deleting filter registrations or system files by hand; the failing graph may depend on components shared by other applications.

Install a codec only from a trusted source
Microsoft documents that missing or unsupported codecs can cause playback errors and that users or applications may install codecs. If the file details identify a codec that Windows does not provide, obtain that codec from an official source. Microsoft also documents additional codec packs through the Microsoft Store.
Why random codec bundles are risky
Unverified “all-in-one” bundles can install multiple competing filters, alter merit priorities and make future graphs less predictable. They may also include unwanted applications. A transport mismatch is not evidence that Windows itself is broken, and installing every codec you can find can create more conflicts than it resolves.
- Install only the specific codec or Microsoft Store package required by the file.
- Read the installer’s component list and decline unrelated offers.
- Restart the player after installation and test again before adding another package.
- If the codec package includes a restore or uninstall option, record it before making changes.
Important Windows 11 version difference: AC-3
Microsoft’s supported-codecs reference states that AC-3 is included on Windows versions before Windows 11 version 24H2, but is no longer included beginning with Windows 11 version 24H2. A video with an AC-3 audio track may therefore play on an older Windows release and fail on a current Windows 11 24H2 installation unless an approved codec or a different player supplies AC-3 support.

The 24H2 distinction does not mean every 0x80040266 error is an AC-3 problem. Confirm the audio codec in the file’s Details information first.

Try a modern playback path
If the failing program is built around DirectShow and continues to produce the error after its filters and codecs are corrected, use a Media Foundation-based player or update the application. Microsoft recommends modern media APIs for new development because DirectShow is legacy.

When you switch players, test the original file rather than a re-encoded copy. If the modern player works, the file may be valid and the original application’s DirectShow graph is the compatibility boundary. If every player fails, revisit the file transfer, container and codec details.

Changing several components at once makes it impossible to know which action helped. Use this order and keep a short note after each test:
- Play a known-good file in the original application.
- Play the failing file in the original application and record the exact message.
- Inspect the failing file’s Properties and Details information.
- Update or repair the original application.
- Retest both files after restarting Windows.
- If the codec is missing, install only the required codec from an official source or Microsoft Store listing.
- Retest again.
- Open the file in a modern Media Foundation-based player.
- Compare the results. This tells you whether the problem follows the file or stays with the original application.
What not to do
- Do not treat the code as proof of malware. 0x80040266 identifies a DirectShow transport mismatch; it does not identify a virus or a security incident.
- Do not install several codec packs at once. Multiple splitters and decoders can compete for the same stream and make the graph harder to diagnose.
- Do not use a registry cleaner or random DLL download. The failing components are selected by the application’s media graph, and replacing system files blindly can damage unrelated programs.
- Do not assume a reinstall will change the graph. If the same unsupported codec or legacy filter is installed again, the same connection failure can return.
- Do not infer support from the extension. A container can hold streams that a particular Windows release or player cannot decode.
When the error appears in a custom or older application
Developers and administrators need more evidence than the HRESULT alone. Capture the application version, Windows version, file container, each audio and video codec, and the point at which graph construction fails. If the software exposes a filter-graph view or logging option, record the upstream and downstream filters and the pin connection that was rejected.
The documented interface mismatch gives a useful diagnostic pattern: one side may require asynchronous file reading through IAsyncReader, while the other expects memory-input delivery through IMemInputPin. The remedy is to select compatible source, splitter, decoder and renderer components, not to repeatedly reboot Windows. If the application is yours, consider moving new playback work to MediaPlayer, IMFMediaEngine or the appropriate Media Foundation capture APIs instead of extending a DirectShow graph.
Escalate with a complete evidence bundle
Contact the application vendor or Microsoft Support when the sequence above does not resolve the problem, especially if the issue began after a Windows release change or affects many files. Include:
- Exact error text and code:
0x80040266 (VFW_E_NO_TRANSPORT). - Application name, edition and version.
- Windows 10 or Windows 11 edition and version, including whether Windows 11 24H2 is installed.
- File extension, container and the audio/video codecs shown in Properties or Details.
- Whether one file, one format or every file fails.
- The last known-good date and any update, codec or filter change immediately before the failure.
- Results from the known-good-file test, application repair, codec check and modern-player test.
- Any filter-graph or application log identifying the two pins that could not connect.
Support can then investigate the actual graph instead of guessing from the code. The HRESULT by itself cannot identify which two filters disagree.
