ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED is one of the most common browser errors. It usually points to a name resolution failure: your device can’t translate the domain name you typed (like example.com) into an IP address.
Because this error can be caused by anything from a typo to broken DNS on your network, the fastest path is a structured sequence: verify the URL, clear DNS, try alternate DNS, remove VPN/proxy interference, refresh the network, and confirm the problem with DNS lookup tools.

What ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED actually means
When your browser requests a site, it first performs DNS resolution. If the resolver can’t find a record (or the response can’t be completed), Chrome and other Chromium-based browsers often show ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
In practice, it can be triggered by:
- Typographical errors in the hostname
- Network DNS issues (router, ISP, captive portal)
- Browser or OS DNS caching
- VPN/proxy/security software blocking or rewriting DNS
- Corporate firewall policies or ad-blockers that affect DNS
- Temporary DNS problems on the domain side (less common, but real)
Before you start: quick checks that save time
Do these in order—each one rules out a category of causes quickly.

- Check the URL: confirm spelling, TLD (com/net/org), and no accidental spaces.
- Try an alternate browser: test in Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari. If it fails everywhere, it’s more likely DNS/network-side.
- Test from another network: if possible, switch from Wi‑Fi to mobile data. If it works on mobile, your Wi‑Fi DNS path is the likely culprit.
- Try a different site: open a known-good domain (example: google.com). If other sites fail too, suspect DNS or connectivity at the network level.
- Check captive portals (hotels/airports): if Wi‑Fi requires sign-in, browsers may show name resolution failures until you authenticate.
Method 1: Fix the URL and DNS expectations
This sounds basic, but many ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED incidents come down to a wrong hostname. DNS resolution is strict: a single character can cause a different (nonexistent) domain.
Follow these steps:
- Re-type the hostname manually instead of copying/pasting.
- Remove URL artifacts: don’t include “http://” twice, don’t include trailing punctuation, and don’t paste in “&” parameters into the address bar.
- If you used a redirect link, try the final destination directly.
- Try both with and without “www”. Example: test
example.comandwww.example.com.
If the error only appears for a single domain, you can also check whether the domain exists and whether its DNS is configured correctly (Method 6 helps verify this).
Method 2: Clear DNS cache (and restart name resolution)
Browsers typically rely on the OS DNS resolver and caches results. If a stale or incorrect DNS mapping is cached, ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED can persist even after the site is back.
Recommended Free Tools
Use the correct command for your operating system.
Windows 10 / Windows 11
- Press Win and type Command Prompt (or Windows Terminal).
- Right-click and choose Run as administrator.
- Run:
ipconfig /flushdns
- Optional but often helpful: restart your browser and try again.
macOS (including Apple Silicon and Intel)
- Open Terminal from Spotlight.
- Run this command:
sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder
- Enter your admin password when prompted, then reload the site.
Chrome / Edge (DNS prefetch and cache)
Clearing OS DNS is usually enough, but if you want browser-side cache reset:
- Open a new tab and go to:
chrome://net-internals/#dns(Chrome). - Select Clear host cache.
- Restart the browser.
In modern Chrome versions, chrome://net-internals has been deprecated in some builds, so OS-level flushing remains the most reliable step.

Android (DNS cache behavior varies)
Android doesn’t consistently expose a single “flush DNS” button. The most dependable approach is to toggle network:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Turn Airplane mode on for 10 seconds.
- Turn it off.
- Or switch Wi‑Fi off/on.
iPhone / iPad (iOS)
- Open Settings > Wi‑Fi.
- Tap the i icon next to your network.
- Toggle Auto-Join off and back on, or toggle Wi‑Fi off/on.
Method 3: Change DNS servers
If your ISP or router DNS resolver is broken or unreachable, using known-good public DNS can immediately fix ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED.
This is also a strong way to distinguish “device problem” vs “network DNS problem.”
Windows 10 / Windows 11
- Open Settings > Network & Internet > Advanced network settings.
- Select your adapter (Wi‑Fi or Ethernet) > Edit.
- Under DNS server assignment, choose Edit and switch to Manual.
- Enter one of these sets:
| Provider | Primary DNS | Secondary DNS |
|---|---|---|
| Google Public DNS | 8.8.8.8 |
8.8.4.4 |
| Cloudflare | 1.1.1.1 |
1.0.0.1 |
| Quad9 | 9.9.9.9 |
149.112.112.112 |
- Click Save, restart your browser, and test the domain.
macOS
- Open System Settings > Network.
- Select Wi‑Fi (or Ethernet) > Details.
- Go to DNS.
- Click + and add IPv4 DNS servers (example:
1.1.1.1and1.0.0.1). - Click OK > Apply.
Router (covers all devices)
If multiple devices on the same Wi‑Fi show ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED, changing DNS on the router often resolves it permanently.
- Log into your router admin panel (commonly
192.168.0.1or192.168.1.1). - Find WAN or Internet settings > DNS.
- Set DNS to one of the providers (commonly Cloudflare or Google).
- Save and reboot the router.
Android / iOS
The easiest method is to rely on router DNS or use a “Private DNS” feature if available.
- On iPhone/iPad: Settings > Wi‑Fi > your network > Configure DNS > Manual.
- On Android (varies by manufacturer): Settings > Network & Internet > Private DNS and set a provider, or use manual DNS settings in Wi‑Fi network details.
Method 4: Disable VPN, proxy, and security filtering
VPNs and security products sometimes intercept DNS (for filtering, telemetry, malware protection, or ad blocking). If the DNS interception is misconfigured, your browser may never resolve the hostname.

Try this sequence:
- Temporarily disable VPN.
- Disable proxy settings.
- Disable DNS filtering/ad-blockers in security suites.
- Restart the browser and retry.
Windows proxy settings
- Settings > Network & Internet > Proxy.
- Turn off Use a proxy server (and also disable Automatically detect settings temporarily for testing).
macOS proxy settings
- System Settings > Network > Wi‑Fi > Details.
- Open Proxies.
- Uncheck HTTP Proxy and HTTPS Proxy for testing.
Browser-specific DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH) toggles
Many browsers can use DNS-over-HTTPS. That’s helpful when it works, but it can also fail if a corporate environment blocks outbound HTTPS or if the DoH provider is unreachable.
- In Chrome: go to
chrome://settings/security> Use Secure DNS. - Try setting it to Off, or choose a known provider, then test.
Method 5: Refresh the network path (router + client)
DNS failures often come from stale network state: DHCP lease issues, router DNS forwarder problems, or an interface that didn’t fully recover after sleep/hibernation.
Follow a controlled refresh to avoid random “maybe it fixed itself” guessing.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
On your computer/phone
- Disconnect and reconnect to Wi‑Fi.
- Or toggle Airplane mode (10–20 seconds on mobile devices).
- Restart the affected browser.
On the router
- Power off the router for 30–60 seconds.
- Power on and wait until the internet light is stable (commonly 2–5 minutes).
- Test the same hostname again.
Release and renew IP (Windows)
- Run Command Prompt as administrator.
- Execute:
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
Then flush DNS (Method 2) and test.
Method 6: Verify connectivity with DNS lookup tools
If you want to confirm whether the DNS record exists and is reachable, use lookup tools. This helps you decide whether the fault is local (your network) or authoritative (the domain itself).
Pick one approach based on your platform.
Windows (nslookup)
- Open Command Prompt.
- Run:
nslookup example.com
- If you need to test against a specific resolver (recommended), run:
nslookup example.com 1.1.1.1
If lookups fail with your default resolver but work with 1.1.1.1, your local DNS path is the problem.
macOS/Linux (dig)
- In Terminal, run:
dig example.com
- Test against a specific resolver:
dig @1.1.1.1 example.com
Check for an ANSWER SECTION with A (IPv4) or AAAA (IPv6) records.

Online checks (quick isolation)
If you can access any external site, you can use DNS verification sites to test whether the hostname resolves from the public internet. If public lookups fail too, your issue is likely the domain/DNS provider rather than your network.
- Try querying the A/AAAA records and compare results from multiple tools.
- Be aware of propagation: DNS updates can take time to reflect globally.
Troubleshooting scenarios and gotchas
Some ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED cases have telltale patterns. Use these to avoid wasting time.
Only one device on the network fails
It’s usually client-side DNS cache, proxy/VPN settings, or a misconfigured network profile. Apply Method 2 and Method 4 first.
All devices on one Wi‑Fi fail for many domains
That points to router DNS settings, ISP DNS, or a captive portal. Apply Method 3 (router DNS) and Method 5 (router reboot).
Works on mobile data but not on Wi‑Fi
This strongly suggests the Wi‑Fi DNS path (router/ISP) or filtering. Change DNS servers (Method 3) or restart the router (Method 5).
Works for http but not https (or vice versa)
ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED is still DNS-level, but TLS interception or security software may change behavior. Disable security filtering (Method 4) and test again.

IPv6-related failures
If your network’s IPv6 DNS route is broken, some clients may attempt AAAA resolution first. If you’re changing DNS servers (Method 3), test both IPv4 and IPv6 connectivity by switching networks or disabling IPv6 temporarily for troubleshooting.
Corporate networks and managed devices
Managed security tools can enforce DNS policies. If you’re on a work network, test from a non-managed device or home network. If it works elsewhere, contact IT with evidence from Method 6 (lookup outputs).
Common mistakes
- Flushing DNS but not restarting the browser or network interface afterward.
- Changing DNS servers on one device while assuming the issue is global.
- Disabling VPN/proxy but leaving browser “Secure DNS” locked to a failing provider.
- Testing only one site—if multiple domains fail, the cause is likely network/DNS, not a single site.
- Ignoring captive portals, which can cause inconsistent resolution errors.
FAQs
Is ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED my fault or the website owner’s fault?
It can be either. If the domain resolves from public DNS tools (Method 6) but fails on your network, it’s usually local (DNS, VPN/proxy, router). If public lookups also fail, the domain’s DNS configuration may be the cause.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallWill clearing browser cache fix ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED?
Not usually. This error is about name resolution (DNS), not cached page content. Clearing OS DNS cache and changing DNS servers are typically more effective than clearing browser cache.
Why does it work later without changes?
DNS failures can be transient. Temporary resolver outages, ISP DNS instability, or routing changes can resolve themselves. If it only happens occasionally, still run Method 6 to confirm whether it correlates with DNS record availability.
Can DNS over HTTPS (DoH) cause this error?
Yes. If DoH is enabled and the DoH provider is unreachable from your network, your browser may fail DNS lookups. Test by turning Secure DNS off or switching to a different provider.
What if only one hostname fails but the domain is correct?
Check whether the exact subdomain exists (for example, api.example.com vs example.com). Some subdomains may not have A/AAAA records, and that will produce resolution failures for that specific hostname.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBottom Line
ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED is a DNS/name-resolution problem more than a browser problem. Start with URL and quick network checks, then move through DNS flushing, alternate DNS servers, and disabling VPN/proxy filtering.
If the error persists, confirm with DNS lookup tools to pinpoint whether the failure is local or domain-side. Once you know which side is wrong, the right fix becomes obvious.
