ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT means Chrome did not connect to a web page quickly enough; it identifies a timeout, not its cause. First check whether one site or several sites fail. Then test the connection and Chrome on the affected device, using the steps below for Windows, Mac or Android.
What the error means
Google describes ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT (also shown as ERR_TIMED_OUT) as a page that took too long to connect. A slow connection or a busy or unavailable page may be involved, but the error by itself does not prove that Chrome, your router, DNS or security software is at fault. Google’s explanation of common Chrome error messages treats it as a connection symptom rather than a diagnosis.

Start by narrowing down the problem
- Check the address and reload once. Correct any typo in the web address, then reload the page.
- Try another website in Chrome. If several unrelated sites time out, investigate the device’s internet connection. If only one site fails, that site or its server may be busy or unavailable.
- For a one-site failure, try another browser. If the same page fails there too, Chrome is less likely to be the sole cause; the website or the network may be involved. Retry later, and contact the website owner if the problem continues.
- Check how the device is connected. Confirm Wi-Fi or mobile data is working. On public Wi-Fi, open the network’s sign-in page and complete its portal if one appears.
These checks separate a problem limited to a site, a browser or a connection before you change settings. Google’s computer connection and loading guidance and Android guidance recommend checking connectivity and considering browser data, extensions, security software and site availability.

Fixes to try on Windows or Mac
Confirm the connection works
Check that the computer is connected to Wi-Fi or another working internet connection, then try more than one website. If multiple sites fail, address the connection before treating this as a Chrome-only issue. If you use public Wi-Fi, finish its sign-in process.

- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Check whether Chrome is the only browser affected
Open the same page in another browser. If it loads there but not in Chrome, focus on Chrome and its settings. If it fails in both, investigate the network or website instead. Google’s computer troubleshooting guidance also recommends comparing browsers and considering security software when Chrome cannot connect.
Review Chrome data and extensions
Browsing data or an extension can be relevant to connection and loading problems. If the failure is limited to Chrome, consider clearing browsing data or reviewing extensions, changing one thing at a time and retesting the page. Menu names and available controls can vary with Chrome and operating-system versions; use the current Chrome interface rather than relying on an outdated click path.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Check firewall or antivirus settings safely
Security software can block a connection, so check whether your firewall or antivirus has flagged Chrome or the site. Do not leave firewall or antivirus protection disabled as a fix. If you are unsure which setting is responsible, consult the software provider or your administrator.

If several sites fail across browsers, restart the modem or router you already use, then reconnect and try again. Google recommends restarting network equipment when connection problems persist. Fixes to try on Android
- Check Wi-Fi or mobile data. Confirm the phone has a working connection. If using mobile data, make sure airplane mode is off.
- For Wi-Fi, check the network. Confirm the Wi-Fi connection works; if it is public Wi-Fi, complete any sign-in portal the network presents.
- Compare sites. Try another website in Chrome. A timeout on several sites points toward the connection; one failing site may be unavailable or having trouble.
- Compare browsers if the problem is limited to one site. Try opening it in another browser. If it fails there too, the website or network may be involved.
- Update and restart Chrome. Google’s Android connection guidance recommends updating and restarting Chrome. Retry the page afterward.
If several sites still fail, check the Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection rather than assuming the Chrome app is responsible. Google’s Android connection and loading help covers connectivity checks and Chrome steps.

Use the symptoms to choose the next step
| What you observe | What it suggests | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Several websites fail in Chrome | The internet connection is worth checking; the timeout alone does not identify the cause. | Verify Wi-Fi or mobile data and any public-network sign-in. |
| Only one website fails in Chrome | The page or its server may be busy or unavailable. | Check the address, try again later and compare in another browser. |
| The same page fails in Chrome and another browser | The issue may be with the network or website rather than Chrome alone. | Check the connection; if the site remains unavailable, contact its owner. |
| The page fails only in Chrome | Chrome data, extensions, settings or security software are areas to review. | Try the Chrome-specific checks for your device above. |
| Public Wi-Fi is connected but pages do not load | The network may require portal sign-in. | Open the network sign-in page and complete the prompts. |
