Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →First confirm that viewers are actually receiving dropped frames: XSplit’s Stage preview can dip while the livestream and local recording remain smooth. Check the delivered output and YouTube Live Control Room before changing settings. If the stream or recording is choppy, diagnose in this order: encoder and computer load, upload stability, then YouTube ingest settings.
1. Confirm where the frames are dropping
Look at the symptom in four places: XSplit’s Stage preview, the stream or a local recording, YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health, and—if possible—a viewer’s playback. A low frame-rate reading in Stage alone is not proof that viewers see a problem; XSplit says occasional Stage-only dips can occur while the actual stream or recording stays smooth.
- Stage dips, but stream and recording are smooth: Avoid disruptive changes based on the preview alone.
- The local recording also stutters: Investigate capture, encoding, and computer load.
- The recording is smooth, but YouTube reports poor stream health or viewers see stutter: Check the outbound network path and YouTube ingest configuration as well as encoder status.
Keep XSplit’s output and YouTube’s health messages open while diagnosing. They help distinguish a bad encoded image from a healthy image that is failing to reach YouTube consistently.
2. Check XSplit’s encoder and computer load
When the actual stream or recording drops frames, XSplit identifies high CPU or GPU usage, network problems, and output settings as major causes. Start with resource load rather than immediately lowering bitrate: encoding is local, so an overloaded computer can produce a poor output even when the internet connection is adequate.

Reduce competing load
- Check XSplit’s status information for CPU and GPU use during the problem.
- Close applications and background tasks that are consuming significant resources.
- If CPU load is high, XSplit’s documented troubleshooting suggests trying Prefer GPU for Video Processing Mode; if GPU load is high, try Prefer CPU. These are diagnostic choices, not universal best settings.
- If available for your hardware and selected output, test another encoder. Encoder options depend on the system and service.
Reduce the work the encoder must do
If load remains high, lower the stage resolution or frame rate and test again. This can reduce processing demand, but it also changes the output quality or motion smoothness. Change one setting at a time so you can tell which adjustment helped.
XSplit’s output properties may expose codec, bitrate, frame rate, resolution, and other encoder controls. Availability and labels vary by output service and version; a service can lock or override some settings. Check the selected YouTube output rather than assuming every control is editable.

3. Test upload stability, not just peak speed
A speed test that looks good once does not prove that a connection can sustain a live stream’s target bitrate. Upload capacity can vary, and other devices or applications may compete for it. In XSplit, run Test Bandwidth for the selected output/server and consider both the average result and jitter. A high-jitter result can be less useful for a stable stream than a lower but consistent result.
- Run XSplit’s bandwidth test for the output you are using.
- Compare the result with your configured video bitrate, leaving capacity for audio and other network traffic.
- If the available connection is inconsistent or undersized, reduce the target bitrate to a rate it can sustain, then test again.
- Check whether other devices or uploads are using the connection. Repeat the test at the time you expect to stream if conditions vary.
If practical, temporarily test a wired Ethernet connection against Wi-Fi to isolate a local wireless issue. This is a diagnostic comparison, not a guaranteed fix: ISP congestion, upstream routing, encoder load, or a bitrate that is too high can still cause drops on a wired connection. If the connection test identifies a problem, YouTube advises contacting your internet service provider.

4. Match the stream to YouTube’s current ingest settings
Use YouTube’s recommendations for the exact codec, resolution, and frame rate you are sending. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube specifies constant bitrate (CBR), recommends a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. Its current encoder-settings guide (accessed October 3, 2026) lists these H.264 examples:
| H.264 stream mode | YouTube minimum bitrate | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s encoder recommendations, not a guarantee that your connection can sustain those rates. YouTube lists different bitrate ranges for AV1 and H.265, so do not apply the H.264 figures to another codec.

Open the selected YouTube output in XSplit and verify the available codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe settings against YouTube’s current guidance. Some options may be unavailable or overridden, depending on the output and service. If YouTube Live Control Room reports an ingest or stream-health warning, use its specific message rather than assuming that an XSplit field has the same label or behavior in every version.

YouTube’s troubleshooting also recommends updating the encoder, inspecting the stream in the encoder, checking encoder CPU load, testing outbound internet, and contacting the ISP when the connection test indicates trouble.
Common dropped-stream symptoms and fixes
| What you see | Likely area to investigate | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Only XSplit Stage shows a frame-rate dip | Preview display rather than delivered output | Check the actual stream and a local recording before changing settings. |
| Local recording and stream both stutter | Capture, encoder, or computer load | Check CPU/GPU use, close competing applications, test the available processing mode or encoder, then reduce resolution or frame rate if needed. |
| Recording is smooth, but YouTube stream health is poor | Outbound connection or YouTube ingest configuration | Run XSplit’s bandwidth test, assess jitter as well as average, and verify the selected output against YouTube’s settings for the codec and stream mode. |
| Connection speed looks sufficient, but stream still drops | Inconsistent upload, jitter, competing traffic, or upstream trouble | Test at stream time, reduce bitrate to a sustainable rate, check other active devices, and contact the ISP if the connection test identifies a problem. |
| YouTube flags a setting or ingest problem | Codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, or an output setting that is locked or overridden | Follow the specific Live Control Room message and confirm which settings XSplit actually exposes for the selected output. |
Copyright and YouTube live eligibility
Frame-drop troubleshooting will not resolve a copyright or live-access restriction. Before streaming, make sure you have the rights to the video, music, and other material you broadcast, and check YouTube’s current live-stream rules and any account notices in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s stream-health panel addresses the technical signal; it does not establish that your content is authorized or eligible to stream.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that stays live with prerecorded videos, StreamNeo is a different approach from diagnosing a desktop XSplit broadcast: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it does not re-encode or stream from a camera. Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
The first day is free with no card, with one free day per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streaming only. See StreamNeo or the plan details. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
