To fix dropped frames in a 4K/60 YouTube Live stream, first determine whether the problem is in the encoder or on the way to YouTube. Compare the encoder preview or a local recording with the stream’s health in YouTube Live Control Room. If the local output is faulty too, investigate the sources, encoder errors and CPU load. If it looks healthy locally but stutters on YouTube, test outbound upload capacity and connection stability before changing hardware.
Find out whether encoding or delivery is the problem
Check the encoder’s own preview and, if available, a local recording. Then check the stream-health messages in YouTube Live Control Room. This comparison helps separate a fault in the video being produced from a problem delivering it to YouTube.

- Both the local output and YouTube stream look or sound wrong: start with the camera, capture and audio/video source routing, then inspect the encoder’s errors and CPU load.
- The local output is clean but the YouTube stream is not: investigate outbound upload capacity, connection stability and other devices using the network.
Encoder counters and dashboard labels vary, so use the diagnostics shown by your particular encoder and Live Control Room rather than assuming every “dropped frames” message means the same thing. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance follows this local-output-versus-delivery distinction.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf the encoder output is faulty
- Update the encoder. YouTube advises using the latest version of your encoding software.
- Read its error messages and check CPU load. Look for evidence of an overloaded or failing component while reproducing the same scene and workload. YouTube does not specify a universal CPU-use threshold or one hardware configuration required for reliable 4K/60 streaming.
- Inspect the complete source path. Check the camera, capture device and audio/video sources routed into the encoder. A clean encoder setting cannot correct a fault in a source or its routing.
- Review a local recording. Check for picture defects, missing sources or audio problems. If the sources and output appear healthy but one encoder continues to fail, YouTube suggests trying a different encoder.
Do not buy a new PC, GPU or capture card until the encoder diagnostics point to a limit that the purchase would address. YouTube describes both software and standalone hardware encoders, but its guidance does not prescribe one model for every setup; its encoder setup and verified-encoder information can help when evaluating alternatives.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
If the local output is clean, test the upload connection
Test outbound upload speed and stability on the same wired or wireless connection the encoder will use, ideally under conditions similar to the event. Download speed alone does not establish that the upload path can carry a live stream reliably.
- Keep the stream’s total outgoing bitrate within the upload bandwidth actually available to it. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom.
- Account for any backup feed as well as the primary stream, and check whether other people or devices are using the shared connection.
- If the wireless path is unstable and the equipment supports it, test a wired Ethernet connection. A cable can help isolate a weak Wi-Fi link, but it cannot fix encoder overload or an ISP connection that lacks capacity.
- If connection tests indicate a network problem, YouTube advises contacting your internet service provider.
See YouTube’s stream troubleshooting guidance and streaming tips for its recommendations on connection strength and bandwidth headroom.

Verify the 4K/60 ingest settings
The current English-US version of YouTube’s live encoder settings page, accessed in 2026, lists these settings for 4K/2160p at 60fps. They are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular encoder or internet plan can sustain them.
| Setting | YouTube’s English-US guidance for 4K/60 |
|---|---|
| H.264 bitrate | 35 Mbps recommended |
| AV1 or H.265 bitrate | 10–40 Mbps listed range |
| Bitrate mode | CBR |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
| Frame rate | Up to 60fps |
| Protocol | RTMP/RTMPS |
| Listed video codecs | H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 |
| Latency at 4K/2160 | Low-latency optimization is unavailable; normal latency is used |
YouTube’s localized settings pages may show materially different bitrate recommendations. The figures above are specifically from the English-US page, not a universal figure for every locale. Check the current settings page for your locale and the settings shown for your event in Live Control Room; do not combine recommendations from different regional tables.

If the stream remains unstable, temporarily lower the resolution, frame rate or bitrate to see whether the fault changes. Treat this as a diagnostic test, not proof of the underlying cause. Choose settings the actual encoder and upload connection can sustain reliably.

- Rehearse representative content. Test with motion and audio similar to what the planned stream will contain; a static test image may not reveal issues that appear in a more demanding scene.
- Configure the event early. YouTube’s streaming tips advise configuring it at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start.
- Check the preview before starting. Confirm the event is accessible in Live Control Room and inspect its preview. YouTube’s settings guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Verify local recording and health. If recording an archive, check that its file is growing. Monitor the stream-health messages and audio/video quality as the event runs.
- Test failover if you use redundant encoders. YouTube describes stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable to confirm playback switches to the backup.
These timings and checks come from YouTube’s streaming tips and encoder settings guidance. A short test made under different network or scene conditions may not reproduce the problem.
