First identify which frames are being lost: OBS separates connection-dropped frames from rendering lag and encoding lag, and each points to a different fix. Check OBS statistics and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages before changing settings. If the connection counter rises, stabilize the upload path or lower bitrate; if rendering or encoding lag rises, reduce the load on your PC. A viewer’s buffering by itself does not prove your stream is dropping frames.
Diagnose the kind of problem before changing settings
OBS reports separate performance counters. Read the counter that is increasing, then corroborate it with YouTube’s stream-health messages and a local recording where available. YouTube recommends checking the stream in the encoder, reviewing errors and CPU load, and inspecting the local archive. If the encoded picture or sound is already poor, look at sources and encoder performance; if it looks healthy locally, investigate the connection to YouTube’s ingest server. YouTube’s streaming troubleshooting guidance explains this distinction.

| Symptom | Evidence to check | Relevant fix |
|---|---|---|
| Connection-dropped frames | OBS connection-dropped-frame counter or connection status, upload stability, and YouTube stream health | Make the network path more stable and use a bitrate the connection can sustain. |
| Rendering or encoding lag | OBS rendering/encoding statistics, CPU or GPU load, and the local archive | Reduce game, scene, GPU, encoder, or output workload. |
| Viewer buffering while broadcaster counters look healthy | Test your own stream; compare reports across viewers, devices, and networks | Investigate the affected viewer’s playback device or network before changing encoder settings. |
OBS’s connection troubleshooting page, dated 2024-09-30, states: “If you experience dropped frames or intermittent disconnections while streaming, there is a network issue between your computer and the remote stream ingest server.” That describes OBS’s connection-dropped-frame category, not every kind of stutter. Fix connection-dropped frames
1. Check stable upload capacity and lower bitrate if needed
Run an upload speed test, but do not treat one high result as proof that the connection can sustain that rate throughout a stream. YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom; count both the primary and backup streams if you send both. YouTube’s bandwidth guidance.
#1 Best Overall

- 【Support Mic-in for Commentary】Rybozen capture card has microphone input and you can use it to add external commentary when playing a game. Please note: it only accepts 3.5mm TRS standard microphone headset.
Reduce the configured video bitrate until it remains stable on your actual connection. OBS’s troubleshooting guide offers 75% of total upload speed as a starting heuristic, not a YouTube rule or guaranteed threshold. Apply YouTube’s headroom recommendation and watch the dropped-frame counter during a representative test rather than relying on that heuristic alone. OBS troubleshooting.
2. Prefer Ethernet and isolate the network fault
- When practical, connect the streaming computer to the router by Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi. OBS notes that Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming.
- If drops continue, temporarily test with VPN or security software interference ruled out, and check whether network-prioritization utilities are deprioritizing OBS. OBS cites Lenovo Vantage Network Boost and Killer NIC software as examples.
- Update the network driver from the computer or motherboard maker if it is outdated.
- Restart the modem and router as a diagnostic step. If that does not help, isolate the cable, network card, router, modem, switch, or extender methodically, then contact the ISP if the route still appears unstable.
- OBS documents network optimizations, TCP pacing, default IP binding, IPv4-only testing, and dynamic bitrate adjustment as possible options to investigate. Availability varies by platform and OBS version, so verify that a setting exists in your current release before following version-specific menu directions. Dynamic bitrate may reduce quality and does not repair the underlying connection fault.
A cable or router replacement is not a general cure: it can only help if that particular part is faulty. OBS lists network devices and cables among possible failure points. See OBS’s network troubleshooting guide.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
Fix rendering or encoding lag
Rendering lag means OBS is struggling to composite the scene; encoding lag means it cannot encode output quickly enough. These are local performance problems, not evidence that the upload route is unstable.
- On Windows, try running OBS as administrator as a diagnostic for GPU overload.
- Close other GPU-intensive applications. If a game is running, cap its frame rate or enable V-Sync, and lower its graphics settings to leave resources for OBS.
- Reduce the stream’s output resolution or frame rate. If 60 fps is not stable, test 30 fps.
- Simplify demanding scenes and sources, including browser sources and filters. Use media at a sufficient rather than unnecessarily large resolution, and keep scene collections focused.
Make one change at a time and watch the relevant OBS counter so you can tell which adjustment helped. These are the remedies in OBS’s encoding and rendering performance guidance.

Choose YouTube-compatible settings without overloading the connection
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists CBR, H.264, H.265, or AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds. The right bitrate depends on both resolution and frame rate, so there is no single correct figure for every stream. Use the current official table for the exact output target you select rather than applying a number intended for a different resolution or frame rate. YouTube encoder settings.
A higher-resolution or higher-frame-rate stream needs more upload capacity and local processing. If either the connection or computer cannot sustain the target, lower the output demand and retest rather than letting the stream repeatedly fall behind.

Test before going live and monitor the right signals
- Before an event, run a representative test with movement and audio similar to the planned stream.
- Watch OBS’s connection, rendering, and encoding counters so you know which category changes.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and messages while the test is running.
- Review the local archive, when available, and compare its picture and sound with what viewers report.
YouTube recommends testing the encoder and checking stream health; it also advises updating encoder software and checking the audio and video sources routed into it. YouTube troubleshooting guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTell broadcaster-side drops from viewer buffering
One viewer reporting an error may have a device or connection problem. Reports from several viewers on different connections are stronger evidence of a broadcaster-side issue; reports from several people on one shared network may indicate a local network problem instead. Confirm the symptom yourself and ask which devices and connections the affected viewers use before changing your encoder. Viewers can buffer even when the broadcaster is not dropping frames because their devices and networks differ. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance and OBS’s buffering guide cover the distinction.

Common causes and practical fixes
- Connection counter rises, especially on Wi-Fi: test wired Ethernet and a sustainable bitrate; then isolate VPN/security software, prioritization utilities, drivers, and network hardware.
- Rendering or encoding counter rises during gameplay: cap the game’s frame rate, lower graphics settings, close competing GPU applications, and reduce output resolution or frame rate.
- Only viewers report buffering: verify your own stream and counters, then compare whether affected viewers share a device, network, or location.
- Archive already has poor picture or sound: inspect the source quality and encoder performance rather than assuming an upload fault.
- Drops persist after basic network checks: investigate the modem, router, cable, network adapter, switches or extenders methodically and ask the ISP to check the connection route.
